1. Revenge?
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (11.25.11)
Pretty decent opinion piece! !I would take issue that it is against the left. Yes, closing a leftist pirate radio station is "against the left" BUT there are no right pirate radio stations to close ( as already stated) Asking the Supreme Court to not be its' own little mob--well the US also has legislative involvement in Supreme court appointees. Depending upon who is in power helps determine who actually gets in. In Israel the right is currently in power, so more right leaning judges would get appointed. If the day comes that the left regains power--guess what??? In terms of telling NGOs that they can't accept foreign funds. The proposed law doesn't say LEFT NGo's it says NGOs. Granted more foreign money is given to left NGOs--but should the right be penalized because they kept their Israeli integrity and independence?
2. Retribution is not good
BJL ,   usa   (11.25.11)
I strongly favor making the laws equal. The left has been abusive for years that is true. However retribution is not the answer. Instead, broaden the access to additional "rightist" (Dont really like the term) Radio, TV and Newspaper. Let the ideas compete freely with the left. People will see that views such as those at Arutz Sheva are sensible and protective of the Jewish State and Yiddishkeit. While the views of the left are destructive to the State of Israel and Jewish life.
3. Whatever! It is ALWAYS better to be RIGHT
Israeli 2   (11.25.11)
4. WHAT DOES THE LEFT EXPECT ?
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.25.11)
That the right will just roll over and die ??? NO WAY JOSE.
5. am yisroel chai
avi ,   miami fl   (11.25.11)
one nation, one people, under one and only Hashem. united we are blessed and unstopable!
6. Actually no revenge or retribution
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.25.11)
This is merely a matter of getting back to equality for all - something the leftists do not believe it. Nor do they believe that the opposition should have freedom of speech, assembly or representation. No there is no revenge or retribution involved here.
7. #2
John sombrero ,   Usa   (11.25.11)
Hate to bust your bubble but the laws are the same as in the US and perhaps less strict and also Nothing in the law says right or left . It applies to everyone.
8. IS SIR DRESSING TO THE RIGHT
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.25.11)
Or to the left today ?? I will not explain the meaning nor the origins of this famous expression at this juncture
9. It's not rightist revenge. It's sanity.
Chaim ,   Israel   (11.25.11)
There is absolutely nothing vengeful about anything rightist parties have done so far. They are merely putting an end to a destructive, ludicrous situation which would never be tolerated in any western democracy. It is ludicrous for anti-Israel groups in Israel to be massively funded by foreigners to wreak havoc. It is ridiculous for the Supreme Court to consist almost entirely of leftists. It is ridiculous to pretend the P.A. are "peace partners", when they constantly shout their intentions to destroy us. It is way past time for Israel to enjoy rational laws and a rational government.
10. Poetic justice: as the "perfect storm"of Arab Spring brews
tom ,   tel aviv   (11.25.11)
on the horizon the Iraeli, general public has finally awaken from it's narcotic slumber and is doing away with the Lunatic Left in our midst. I only hope we'll finish the transition back to sanity in time....!
11. Absolutely appalling piece of crowing..
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (11.25.11)
...masquerading as journalism. As if the so-called Israeli left was running the country until yesterday. Who has ‘run’ the country since the almost late Sharon for the last 7 years? The 'revenge' Segal crows about, with no remorse, is in fact revenge by the chauvinistic demagoguic right and religious nationalists on anyone and everyone, in other words on the nation as a whole. The media, the Supreme Court, NGOs, human rights, the laws of the state, ex generals heads of the security services, they're all Lefties and not worth mentioning. Segal justifies it all with fascist style rhetoric and Ynet publishes it as journalism. Go'al Nefesh.
12. LEFT OR RIGHT ?
URBAN POET ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.25.11)
Left is best left bereft but might is right this argument is airtight and I talk a lot of shite so I wish you all goodnight.
13. Re #11
Isaac Shladovsky ,   East Windsor, USA   (11.26.11)
Kudos to Mr. Ussishkin, a sane and responsible voice in an insane and vitriolic wilderness of ignoramuses whose messages all too often border on the psychotic
14. Thank, God!
Jake Stone ,   USA   (11.26.11)
Great news...they're finally starting to purge the traitorous leftists' and their insidous ways. God bless Israel!
15. The right will always try silence criticism
PaulZion ,   Israel   (11.26.11)
In that sense, the world has never changed. However, let us get our facts straight: from 1977, when the Likud first came to power, the right in Israel has held power for 24 years out of 34 - and remember: Sharon was as right as they come, he was no Leftist. ( 1977-1984, 1986-1992, 1996-1999, 2001-2006, 2008-2011). Therefore, to state that this is revenge for " Leftist legislation" is nothing more than ugly demagoguery. Furthermore, if politicians are so small-minded that they seek "revenge legislation", then we are in a worse state than I thought. In my opinion, it is more like they find it unpleasant to hear criticism (perhaps it pricks their consciences too much?), so instead of looking to see what they did wrong, they silence their critics. Typical fascist thinking and behavior. Bye bye democracy, hello tyranny. Next, they will outlaw Leftist parties, and place Leftist leaders under house arrest under the guise of treason or subversion - and "stage sham elections" like in Syria. When that happens, the core justification for Israel's right to exist will disappear. This is dangerous ground and Hagai Segal is plodding through like a bull in a china shop.
16. To 11 and 13 this is an op-Ed and is advertised as such.
Joe Fraser   (11.26.11)
17. Wow, quite frankly said!
berlonski ,   berlin   (11.26.11)
Revenge as a major motivation for politics! ... If this is really the case in Israel - my deepest concolences to all sincere Israelis! But hopefully this text just reflects the state of mind of Mr. Segal.
18. #17: Segal's state of mind
Canadian Dude ,   Canada   (11.26.11)
He's a hateful, bigoted ignoramus- one only needs to read his own work to see it, and he makes little effort to disguise it anyhow. One shouldn't be surprised when the theme of revenge find its way into his columns; this one's actually fairly mild compared to his usual tripe.
19. Not revenge, but a correction
Sam   (11.26.11)
The public in Israel wants the Likud to rule, not the entrenched Meretz activists controlling our courts and bureaucracy. I know that the Leftists don't like the meaning of the word democracy, even if they cite constantly as a mantra.
20. Refreshing, Kind of
Tee Bee Dee ,   Denver CO USA   (11.27.11)
Refreshing to hear a Right-winger accurately describe the latest wave of Knesset legislation as motivate by revenge. The bills aimed at limiting (or taxing) foreign government funding of NGO's have nothing to do with transparency, as those NGO's have long been required to report the sources of their funds. It about punishing them for what they have to say and for what they do, because these NGO's criticize government policy (g-d forbid). Mr. Hagai also correctly points out that the Left is perfectly capable, when it has been in power, of punishing the Right. However, the current wave of bills against the Right has no precedent, at least in terms of number of proposals and the extent to which they seek to silence one point of view. As Hagai points out, the latest wave of Knesset proposals is hardly "a model of intelligence and morality". So sad to see my beloved Israel - which I have so long defended as the "only real democracy in the Middle East - behaving in such an undemocratic manner.
21. A fact
CC   (11.27.11)
All contrarians of this article is from one single individual. From "Denver", Canada (two) and the alleged Israeli is one and the same guy. Easy to see and realize. Btw, good piece Segal and even better notion what is sorely, desperately needed in the People's Republic Of Israel, which is currently a soft-bolshevik state for all intents and purposes according to many, perhaps the majority of Israelis.
22. The far Left= occupy it. The 1% controlling the 99%
hippocrates ,   earth   (11.28.11)
your mascharde of freedom (your own, not others') is over. your bolshevik style "democracy" fools only yourselves.
