1. With Iceland in it's corner Palestine can't be stopped.
Kubrikon ,   NYC, USA   (12.15.11)
That was sarcasm in the subject line. Iceland is a bankrupt inbred state of 300,000. I hope the Palestinians don't expect too much financial support from Iceland if they continue with their current course. Maliki is right. The international community is not doing what is needed. It should be forcing the Palestinians into realistic negotiations instead of pompous posturing. At the same time, it seems that there is no appetite in the 'international community' to get involved in the region which translates into a free hand for Israel to determine its own borders.
2. Iceland has given Israel the "cold shoulder"
Ivan ,   South Africa   (12.15.11)
3. I recognize the independent state of Narnia
zionist forever   (12.15.11)
Iceland can recognize Narnia or Middle Earth if they want but it won't make it a real place anymore than recognizing Palestine ir will make it anymore real. Alot of people would like to see a state of Palestine but until both the UN General Assembly & Security Council recognize this state ( not UNESCO ) then it still doesn't exist and if Abbas doesn't want to talk it never will. Right now Iceland should be more concerned about their economy which is also a mess and stop playing silly games.

graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (12.15.11)
Best news in a long time, but actually no surprise. Iceland has long been in a leadership position when it comes to geopolitical morality and social justice. More nations will surely follow, almost in a landslide.

18. Iceland recognises myths, not facts.
Doug ,   Wales   (12.15.11)
Does Iceland recognise the San Remo peace accord? It effectively created the Jewish state of Palestine in 1920. These provided for Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria, which is implicit under international law, and a right that has not been rescinded. I doubt if the Icelandic government is even aware of these legalities, preferring to base their machinations upon political expediency and self interest. The details for the planned independent Jewish state in Palestine were set forth in 3 basic documents, which may be termed the founding documents of mandated Palestine and the modern Jewish state of Israel that arose from it. These were the San Remo Resolution of April 25, 1920, the Mandate for Palestine conferred on Britain by the Principal Allied Powers and confirmed by the League of Nations on July 24, 1922, and the Franco-British Boundary Convention of December 23, 1920. These founding documents were supplemented by the Anglo-American Convention of December 3, 1924 respecting the Mandate for Palestine. It is of supreme importance to remember always that these documents were the source or well-spring of Jewish legal rights and title of sovereignty over Palestine and the Land of Israel under international law. The rhetoric from Iceland means nothing.

28. Gullible Iceland
Dallas ,   Canada   (12.16.11)
If Icelanders would believe any propaganda, they either have no access to the truth, or else they choose to ignore it. The population of Iceland just lost its credibility as a thinking and rational nation.
29. #5 graczek - "Social Justice"
Dallas ,   Canada   (12.16.11)
Everyone in the world knows that the term "social justice" on the surface seems to be a concept implying compassion and fairness, however, the premise as prescribed, two or three steps later, means exactly the opposite. Just like a chess player who cannot see more than one move ahead, the purveyor of this ideology, while well-meaning, does not have the mental sophistication to anticipate and understand the implications of "social justice" as it progresses to its hellish, Orwellian extreme.
30. Will Iceland now sanction Israel?
Vlad   (12.16.11)
What will they do, cut off fish exports to Israel? Fun fact, Iceland's economy is wholly dependent on fishing. The Icelandic Coast Guard actually fought a quasi-war with the Royal Navy after they illegally extended their territorial waters and banned the British from snagging their precious fish. Notice how no EU state has recognized Palestine or sanctioned Israel. EU sanctions won't come, because if they did, the EU would just be shooting itself in the foot. With the Euro in crisis, Europe doesn't want to lose trade with an economically viable Western partner. Plus, Israel would simply refuse to deal with any EU state involved with the sanctions and might retaliate by expelling EU observers and consuls in the West Bank and Jerusalem, bringing an end to Europe's role in the peace process and hampering its attempt to establish itself as a global leader.
