I wonder if it is a coincidence that 2 Knesset members of the Yisrael Beiteinu party are involved in controversies in the Knesset. maybe, just maybe it is a sign of their political culture and manners. Then again, I am not really surprised. Look who leads them - a man who admires and makes excuses for that tyrant, Putin. While I abhor racism and feel that we could all to better to absorb the Ethiopian Jewry into our "melting pot", this issue is not so clear cut. The people who own these properties do have a legal right to decide to whom they sell or rent their properties. If they are racist as private citizens, I do not believe that a law can be passed to force them not to be. Democracy still allows freedom of thought and speech, and however much we may disagree with their views, they too have the right to say no to someone who wants to buy their apartment. Applying social pressure to force them to change their minds is another matter. Maybe that is the way to go.

We may say Ethiopian, but if they are Jews, then they are Israelis, end of story. Whether their community converted in the distant past, or are a remnant of ancient Israelite, doesn't matter. Many of us are not Sabras, but that doesn't mean we are not Israelis, in essence, by birth. Now can we all calm down and accept that the great return of Israelites from all over the world, whether convert communities or not, is not simple or easy, and that problems are natural. When we see a problem, let us reason together. Talkback name-calling and insults is just the sort of strife among brother Israelites that did us no good in the days before the revolt against Rome. And stop confusing ISRAELI and SABRA. We Jews are all Israelites. None of use needs to be ashamed of gentile customs and habits which we have that are inoffensive to the faith of Israel, but on the other hand, none of us should even try to live primarily in our exilic past, either. Our identity is here, as Israelis. Those who are not Jewish, well, I wish you a good life whether here or back in your own home. I am sure that we all have given offense unintentionally to each other, and sometimes intentionally. But in the end, let us work together as Israelis, and stop this nonesense of calling every glitch in the adjustment of Israelis from Ethiopia racism. It is clearly a clash of culture far more than it is genuine racism. Genuine racism, say American style where many whites still believe that a black man is genetically inferior, is not that common here, and requires a far stronger, harsher response. The object isn't blame and insult, but understanding and solutions.
