1. Register me as Khazar, now an Israeli and American.
Michael ,   California, USA   (02.01.12)
In the "Jewish" registry, put me down as a Cultural atheist Jew. Is this crystal clear?
2. The ones I have met in the absorption center
olim hadashim ,   tel aviv/israel   (02.01.12)
were at the maximum half-jews.Why Israel lets these people in is a question whose answer I do not know till now.
3. @ no.2
Aharon ,   Rishon, Israel   (02.01.12)
Stop Judging whether or not others are Jew enough for you. I bet you're only a 1/4 Jewish. How does that feel?
4. When Moshiach comes, it will be crystal clear who is jewish.
Dr. Shemesh ,   Eilat   (02.01.12)
Until then, we dont know for sure.

observer ,   Egypt   (02.01.12)

7. #2
Dan the Jafa ,   Auckland, NZ   (02.01.12)
Just out of curiosity, how do you know the percentage of their Jewishness? Have you been conducting the kind of forensic research outlined in the article? Or you actually *talked* to any of them? Or it is just your bigotry talking? Or are you purer than them just on the virtue of being born in the USA?
8. civil marraige now
avramele   (02.01.12)
introduce civil marraige and then all can decide on what kind of ceremony is to their liking. let the orthodox at their own expense set up geneological registries to protect their definitions of Jewish purity. and let the rest of live by our own definitions of who we are and who we connect with. such a waste of time and energy leading to needless hatred.
9. Russians aren't only ones rejected by JAFI
Aharon   (02.01.12)
I know people from other countries, like the US, who've been rejected because the rabbi who wrote their letter for Jewish proof wasn't a JAFI approved rabbi. Israel encourages Jews to make aliyah, yet rejects them at the same time. All the while they let thousands of refugees from Africa and Asia come into the country and don't do a thing about it.
10. 2 Sabotage...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (02.01.12)
of an eventual Haredi majority in Israel. That might be the answer.
11. I Understand
Mychal ,   TN, USA   (02.01.12)
As a convert who entertains no hope of ever being recognized as a Jew in Israel--as someone who knows she'd be a second-class citizen in Israel without full rights for marriage and burial--my heart goes out to these people. There's nothing more hurtful than to live as a Jew and know you are a Jew, and to be made to jump through legal hoop after legal hoop, and STILL have people judge you not to be a Jew.
12. @10 Whatever they undertake at the end the
olim hadashim ,   tel aviv/israel   (02.01.12)
jewish steamroller will be coming . This for sure.
13. I don't understand... If the original immigrants couldn't...
Very strange ,   Israel   (02.01.12)
prove they were Jewish, how were they allowed to immigrate?
14. but, who is not Jew?
observer ,   Egypt   (02.02.12)
15. Civial marriage will solve all this religious mumbo jumbo
Haim ,   Tel Aviv   (02.02.12)
16. Ambassador!?!
Ron ,   Ashkelom   (02.02.12)
What the heck is she wearing!?! Who approved that? She is representing a country for god sakes!
17. 'donate' to the rabinute, and you become a Jew
Talula ,   Israel   (02.02.12)
Why would anyone lie about being Jewish? Anyone who claims to be a Jew and wants to come live in Israel should be congratulated. Sadly, we are, afterall, one of the most disliked nations on earth - anyone who wants to be a part of that is a hero in my eyes.
18. this makes me sick
fred lazin ,   ny ny   (02.02.12)
We have sold out to the Orthodox. WHo cares about this subject. The immigrants came to Israel why can't we just accept them as jews. Its like Germany in the 1930s going back to check generations were the grandparents Jewish. learn from American Jewry the reform and others tolerance and acceptance who needs purity.
19. Stop the Confusion
Daniella ,   Los Angeles, USA   (02.03.12)
In Israel there's a difference between being defined as a Jew for the purpose of Aliyah/Immigration and being Jewish for the purpose of the Rabbinate (which officiates marriage/burial etc). Many who have commented are confusing the 2..A person who is even 1/4 Jewish in ancestry can move to Israel but the rabbinate would not recognize them as Jewish unless the heritage is maternal. This org. seeks to verify the maternal heritage so those people can get married/buried as Jews in Israel according to the Rabbinate. And for those still left in Russia it seeks to clarify their Jewish heritage period so they can participate in Jewish life and/or make Aliyah.
20. Nationality
Avi ,   TLV   (02.03.12)
I am Dutch and Israeli because I was born in Holland and now living in Israel, so my nation-ality is a combined one. A lot of other Israeli's have dual nation-ality as well, this is very common. Now I've made that very clear, let's jump to religion, I can only have one religion, not dual blabla, just one. So I don't see the issue here except the rabbinate that is making a lot of people feel homeless, let's move to a modern state with a clear seperation of religion and state and get rid of these old fools that want to dictate/rule our lives.
21. I agree with 17 and 18
Iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (02.03.12)
If someone wants to be Jewish and identifies with it, let that person belong and give him/her a rousing welcome, without all that technical rigamarole. Who needs it? What's the point? The Rabbis are more interested in "pedigrees" and bloodlines than dog breeders. Silly waste of time.
22. Hi...
Lisa Shalom ,   Montreal   (06.25.13)
wondering how to contact the shorashim organization?
