33. #30. Your depressing and false perspective.
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.04.12)
#30. Sagi. It's a good thing I'm positive and optimistic by nature. You certainly know how to write a depressing, downer post. Nor does your post tally with the basic facts, which show most Israelis are observant; though not necessarily religious. Meaning that most Israelis are fine with an observant society.. Not a theocratic society. Nobody would accept that and virtually nobody wants to impose it. As for your statement "the end is night"...You've got to be kidding. This is nihilism without firebombs. Israel grows richer, stronger and more wonderful every year.

You accuse me, Sir, of Nihilism. Nihilism as a philosophy is a complete negation of existing orders and indeed a negation of the intrinsic value of life itself. This is not me. I am a total believer in law and order and that every citizen should respect these. Life has a value which is priceless. Aristotle declared Athens as neither a State nor a City, but an idea. One of the most important values of the Athenian idea was freedom. Freedom for me is more than a basic idea, it is cardinal, it is the highest value to which Man can aspire. Extreme religiosity tends to enslave and enchain the individual, whereas unfettered thought and expression tend to set a man on a course which can only cause him to soar to heights. This is what led Man out of the darkness of restraint imposed upon him by dogma, which if not adhered to by will was administered to him by the sword, by the command and will of none other than "god, but by way of the cardinals, and bishops etc.

ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (02.05.12)
extreme religiosity. I guess, extreme freedom is neither advisable . Do you think that the Athenian idea of freedom is the best model for Israel ? Considering that the ancient Athenians have disappeared and we Jews still exist. I am always mostly interested in your comments. Have a fine week,Sagi.

Agree with you ,but as for a written constitution me thinks it wont happen. The reason is simple, the Arab citizens of Israel would need to be afforded equal rights, otherwise somebody might suggest that the only democracy in the middle east aint that democratic after all. Separation of state from religion also wont happen here until certain struggles are finally settled. Expect some severe internal social rumblings here in the near future.
42. Ora # 38 Freedom
Sagi   (02.05.12)
is a word and a value which cannot be qualified by an adjective such as extreme, or any other adjective for that matter. It is rather like the word unique. An object cannot be very unique, it is either unique or not. Similarly, there are no degrees of freedom. Freedom of choice, expression and thought etc. are all embodied within the values of democracy. Obviously one must consider the laws of the land in which he resides and respect them at all times. Tha basic problem is that religion and democracy are incompatible, always have been and always will be. People must be free to do and think as they like and please, within the bounds of the law. The law has a purpose, which is to control public order, it is not intended to tell people when and how to eat or when and how to enjoy their day of rest.
