1. It's a wise move. When entering Safari-area in Africa one's
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.05.12)
warned not to get out of vehicle and not to feed the animals. We have our own Safari, Holy-Land style. Finally!!! Yeay..............
2. Dress modestly
judith ,   Rishon Letzion   (02.05.12)
This is a most stupid announcement. Of course one should dress modestly at all times, and one should/must respect the mores and customs of communities they chose to visit. Haredim are not the enemy; they are Jewish people who prefer to live life as they want to in their own communities.
3. #2 Judith and the modesty police
Haim ,   TA   (02.05.12)
Dress modestly at all times ?Will you be providing guidelines what women can and cannot wear? Accoriding to who exactly ? How about women turing around and telling them " hay buddy take a shower" ever heard of Body Odour ? Yes the harideed are the enemy they pose more of a threat than Iran.
4. Sad that people have to be warned !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.05.12)
Those extremists have to be banned and expelled from here , they can go and "live" in another place , but there they will have to work . As long we don't see more opposition to them , from the charidi world , as long as they will segregate buses and sidewalks , i'll put the blame on ALL the charidim . Oppose them as the Zaka founder did , and i will change my mind . The Zaka founder was only ONE voice in the desert , not enough .
5. Warnings are necessary
rivkah f. ,   jerusalem   (02.05.12)
I always warn my foreign guests & visiting students & tourists to dress appropriately in Arab areas as well -- no shorts, no tank tops, no mini-skirts, a sleeve of some kind, a hat. While Mea Shearim is stricter about these things, too many Western visitors think that everyone is like they are & have no idea of cultural differences. Respect for the locals is necessary, but those segregated buses are not. Most haredi men would not sit next to a woman anyway so those buses constitute a provocation and should certainly not receive govt. (Egged) approval.
6. Define Immodest
emanon ,   USA   (02.05.12)
That is the problem. It seems that everyone has different ideas of what is modest or not. Yes, some, like see through clothing and no underwear, may not be appropriate for street wear in orthodox neighborhoods, but I'm thinking of the little girls that was recently accosted. She had along sleeves and a long skirt in the photos I saw of her. Real hard to define that as immodest. What do they expect? Full burqahs with only one eye visible like what the taliban approves of?
7. Haredim are more dangerous to Israel than Iran!!!
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (02.05.12)
Iran might attack and you might servive or not but haredim are slowly slowly drinking blood and money out of our system. They don't work and live on our tax money. Many of them work in hiding and not taxes are paid on that. No body cares that these taxes are building our roads, schools and other facilities. No body cares of this very country they claim as god given. Their treatment of woman is nearing to muslim treatment. They claim to be holy and walking on god's path, but don't feel ashamed to spit on womans face and call six year old's pros*******. They are trying to pull all of us back to stone age...I agree with what once ex-mossad chief said, haredim are more dangerous to our existance than Iran. It is pity that this danger is seen and noticed by ouside world more faster than our own government.....
8. define modest
Rita ,   TelAviv   (02.05.12)
having read about the recent issues the haredi seem to have with women, I would recommend a burqa.
9. What is the fuss about?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.05.12)
Hasn't modest dress when visiting Mea Shearim always been the case? I wonder if the United States also publishes attire advisories for people who travel to Saudi Arabia.
10. Violence and Lawless
Carmen ,   Helsinki Finland   (02.05.12)
If you are lawful, you control yourself and keep your hands off others.
11. US Warns Tourists
Rachel ,   Maoz   (02.05.12)
This is just plain stupid! In the summer people wear shorts, sleeveless tops, whatever suits them. The only area where signs ask for modest dress is directly in Mea Shearim, and even there, during the week it is so busy people rarely look. On Shabbat the streets are blocked because they people are observant. They only ask that their beliefs be respected. The woman who started this is no Rosa Parks. She is a publicity seeking hack who planned this and sure enough got her 15 minutes of fame. Disgusting.
12. Peanuts for the monkeys.
Visitor   (02.05.12)
Regular peanuts are not acceptable, no sir, however if they are chocolate coated then they can be classified as candies and thus can be ruled as acceptable.
13. Wear a burqa to Jerusalem next time, man or woman. Progress!
Michael ,   California, USA   (02.05.12)
14. "haredi neighborhoods" ,...
split ,   US   (02.05.12)
In other countries you call it ghettos ;)
15. Haredi Conversion Seeker
Yitzhack ,   Lusaka, Zambia   (02.05.12)
I believe the Haredi are the only ones still carrying the Spirit of G-d of Israel. Kindly link me up to a Haredi Rabbi for conversion. I wish the whole world would learn from them how to keep Torah and this world would be a paradise. Send my email to their Rabbi, I want to convert to Haredi if its allowable.
16. us embassy website
AK ,   Brum, UK   (02.05.12)
I have checked the embassy website. No warning or any sort of the information the articles refer to.
17. The onus is on the Haredim and not toursits or Israelis
Linda ,   New York   (02.05.12)
The problem is that these are PUBLIC streets and people should not be accosted, no matter what they are wearing. The term immodest is relative as the little girl accosted and spit upon was certainly dressed modestly. The burden is on the Haredim, who should just learn to avert their eyes and control their sexual urges. Blaming the women who are "dressed immodestly" is tantamount to blaming the rape victim and saying she provoked the attack.
18. 16 - I have checked the embassy website.
split ,   US   (02.05.12)
Why? It's the US Consulate warning.
19. where is israeli gouvernment?
Ze'ev ,   Nürnberg, Germany   (02.05.12)
When the gouvernment will take steps against these religious extremists! Since when a democracy like Israel needs such travel recommodations? Its such a shame!!!
20. # 19
Govt ,   Only democracy   (02.05.12)
The government is here but will do nothing against these lunatics. Its because of the composition of the coalition needed to keep them comfortably in power.
21. 11 - On Shabbat the streets are blocked ,...
split ,   US   (02.05.12)
Why, are there no sidewalks? Are they private, who pays for it? This people should move somewhere on the desert and stay there not among others. Anyone wonders why no one misses them in Europe?
22. Wrong travel advisory
Jon ,   Baltimore US   (02.05.12)
They should just warn people not to travel to areas that are predominantly frequented by religioius extremists. These are people who attack modestly dressed women for posting signs on walls and spit on schoolgirls and call them names for showing too much ankle and making them have impure thoughts. Avoiding the areas entirely is the only intelligent thing for tourists to do or for the State Department to recommend,
23. HRC warning to travelers in Jerusalem/Charedi communities
mimi jacques ,   oob,usa   (02.05.12)
Perhaps Sec. of State HRC could also issue a warning for travelers to US- in Washington,D>C. do not wear jewelry- pay attention to your handbag/tote- don't wander into neighborhoods where at night lights are dim and do not become a victim of mugging. Carjackings also occur even at malls- lock your doors,do not open windows. In case you are immodestly dressed in Saudi Arabia- you asre lucky to escape with x amount of canings but the bright side you are not beheaded. This is grandstanding by HRC- what she should have told tourist is - respect the local customs- do not drive on Sabbath in neighbourhoods where Sabbath is observed . You are lucky to be a tourist in Israel- they value your very life- crossing borders elsewhere your luck may run out.
24. not religious
yair   (02.05.12)
Your comment disgusts me. Think twice before you type such insensitive things.
25. Dress code
shred ,   USA   (02.05.12)
judith , Rishon Letzion (02.05.12) you haver a point but would the ultra Orthodox reciprocate. For example not to wear a SHTREIMEL in secular areas or blocks where secular people live since many think it is cruel to make a hat of fur. of course not, they even got a exemption for incorporating fur for the SHTREIMEL . therefore your and their words are very hollow and disingenuous
26. no body
Rose ,   Johannesburg,   (02.05.12)
nobody is one word
27. Who decides what is modest?
Joan ,   Haifa   (02.05.12)
Oh, for heaven's sake (no pun intended)! I have always tried to follow the principle of appropriate dressing for the area I'm in, but there's a problem here with defining "modesty." An outfit that is modest to some people will be immodest to others. For instance that little girl who was spat upon by some haredi man was dressed modestly to my mind. Was that man (the spitter) some kind of pedophile to have his sexual urges stimulated by the sight of an 8-year old's ankle?
28. Put on your helmets, entering a war zone
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (02.05.12)

J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (02.05.12)
You will be rejected ,not on religious grounds, but because of psychological reasons, try somthing else.
