1. US to cut funding for Israeli missile defense programs
Robert Levita ,   Toronto Canada   (02.14.12)
To quote the beggar from Fiddler on the Roof ... if the U.S. had a bad year, why should Israel suffer.
2. good
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (02.14.12)
The US should entirely cut all "financial aid" to Israel and use that money in America for Americans. The only effect the money has is increased corruption, unemployment, and giving the US excessive influence in Israel.
3. Obama's true colours
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (02.14.12)
4. Cutting the budget ....
Haifa   (02.14.12)
The amount the U.S. gives is only 1% of the whole budget, and every dollar given MUST be spent ONLY on U.S. military equipment which we always have to modify. There are so many stipulations and regulations on these purchases as well. Sometimes it is required by the U.S. that no changes be made and must be purchased as is. I believe we could do a great deal better if we did not have ANY aid from the U.S. W ith the amount the U.S. gives to our enemies, we don't have a superior position militarily now anyway. If Ron Paul gets elected, he will cut all aid to us. As it stands now, we are being controlled and dictated to by Obama because of this aid. Time to go it alone with HaShem, O Israel!
5. what O'dumber SHOULD CUT! aids to UN, Egypt, Pals
mary of bethany ,   singapore   (02.14.12)
after all are said, all posters commented, Republicans critics, Israel Laments.... when 2012 election arrive, J-streets will still elect O'dumber. sometimes wonder who is more "dumber", Dumb the O'dumber or the dumb-ones who elect the O'dumber.
6. Entitlement Spending Cuts
Mark ben Josef ,   USA   (02.14.12)
Republicans have been demanding cuts in entitlement spending. The Congress also ordered reductions in US Defense spending by almost $1 Trillion.
7. Cutting defense
Chaim ,   Arad   (02.14.12)
News Flash: The Defense Minister today announced that it can further cut the budget by collecting all weapons from the military. With the cut back on the defense from the US, and with the collection of weapons from the IDF, the cut back on flying time for cadets, and the cut back on the drone and the Iron dome system, (since we haven't had rockets fired this morning) the Defense Minister stated that money saved can go to the PALS to help educate the children to love all and to provide lap tops to the Hamas to play war games instead of attacking Israel. Therefore all IDF will be issued Matzah Balls to carry; the cadets will be given tasks of building balsa planes to fly, and the government will be contacting civilians who learned as a child in building rocket models to build the defense system. 8. My analysis
Vlad   (02.14.12)
As 1.4% of Israel's budget, US aid to Israel is insignificant in its effectiveness. It's a token gesture, displaying a public commitment to Israel's security, which Israel can use as a bargaining chip in the Middle East and to comfort public opinion, and it gives the US a trustworthy strategic partner and base of supply for US forces in the area, and a market for US military technology. And it gives the US greater influence over the regional superpower. Many Arab governments are prepared to covertly cooperate with the United States and even Israel (the Mossad's Tevel division maintains covert, quasi-diplomatic relations with Muslim states). According to Stratfor, the whole "peace process" is a US creation designed to keep public opinion in the Muslim world stable and allowing cooperation with Arab governments by portraying the US as treating Israel and the Arabs equally. Many Arab governments would be privately appalled by a US-Israel estrangement, and would question the reliability of an alliance with the US. The US government sees a break with Jerusalem as a source of instability. This could be Obama's hidden message to Israel. Obama is sending a message that Israel will be alone if it attacks Iran, in an attempt to dissaude Bibi from even trying. He also might be expressing his anger over Netanyahu's conduct during the peace process. Or alternatively, it might be due to the economic situation in the US. That doesn't really matterl the aid is marginal in its effect. No one in Israel really has any objections if that is the case.
9. MBJ how much is being cut back from the PA?Egypt?Jordan?
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (02.14.12)
The Moslem world? Egypt has just given the US the finger over the arrests of US citizens. No obvious problems there for the "intelligentsia" aka Arab firsters
10. So we should concentrate on "educating" everybody NOT to
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.14.12)
shoot at Israel. Until now we can't manage to persuade a bunch of goat-loving hammasniks not to throw garbage at us from Gaza. I wonder what are our chances regarding education of Mr.Aqua-dinejad??! But hey Husni Obama: point taken....
11. Why in the first place !
To #1 ,   US   (02.14.12)
Robert, why in the first place we should provide those funding? I think we should focus more on our citizens specially the jobless !
12. Egypt?
To #5 ,   US   (02.14.12)
If Obama cuts his aid to Egypt be sure that the price of gaz that Israel is receiving will increase ! Why your attacking Obama? Why you do you need always to count on each other? what happens to the strong state of Israel ? Should you always be dependent of others to survive?
13. Obama has been Israel's defense nightmare president
zionist forever   (02.14.12)
First he suspended the delivery of bunker busters authorized by the Bush administration, paid for and awaiting delivery. Israel wanted to buy some more Apache helicopters to replace its aging fleet of Cobras something no president has ever refused the sale of before. Obama refused on the grounds they might be used against the palestinians, he didn't though force Abbas to talk peace so there would be no need to use the Apaches against them. At the same time he was refusing to sell Israel those weapons with military aid Egypt was buying attack boats, Apaches, F16 and many other toys with Obama's blessings. Now at a time when everybody from Hamas - Iran are getting more advanced missiles Obama is cutting missile defense spending. The $7 million cuts are a fortune to Israel but for Obama & his spending its pocket change. Time for finance minister Daphne Leef to accept she can't have all her social justice demands because security must come first and without security her affordable houses will come tumbling down first time a missile hits.
14. Obama has just promised to continue finding PA and Egypt

15. To PSM@9 - Small Cuts to PA, Egypt & Jordan
Mark ben Josef ,   USA   (02.14.12)
Most of the budget battle is over birth control and taxes. Republicans don't believe in either.
16. To #11 Cos there is an existential threat on Israel. Selfish

Lets not Obama writing off $1 billion of Egyptian debt to the US to compensate it for the loss in tourism during their little revolution. Totally unheard of that the US compensates a country for a loss of tourism let alone a loss because of an internal matter. He has also guaranteed that the a US will invest billions in Egypt to help stimulate its economy. American has its own economic problems but Obama's priority is stimulating the Egyptian one. You can bet that if Obama likes the new Syrian regime there will be a couple of billion in cash heading their direction and they will be added to the list of recipients of military aid. The PA of course continues to get a steady income from the US & EU all with big hearts and small brains because nobody ever questions the need for this money. Obama likes to help everybody except America and its allies.
18. Nice one there
Joyce ,   Jerusalem   (02.14.12)
Infact there should be total cancellation, so that the money will be enjoyed by the Americans.
19. #13 - zionist forever
Devorah   (02.14.12)
This has me wondering about the F35. Panetta threatened to cut the program but backed off on Jan. 20 thanks mainly to Congress. But if Obama is re-elected, then what? Will the U.S. still want to sell the F35 to Israel or will Obama sign his millionth Executive Order forbidding it?
20. What? NOW YOU ARE COMPLAINING?
Brad ,   USA   (02.14.12)
Every time there is an article here about US Aid, most of talkbacks state that it is "overinflated", that it does not represent true money and most of them end up in the same note: "Americans, who cares for your money, don't give it to us, we can do all alone! We don't need you to give us money and then dictate what we should do!" And now - you complain about the decision in which Obama does EXACTLY what you want? And call him names? This is either double-faced from the beginning or you don't know what you want, but you still want to nag and brutalize others with your non-defined wishes.
21. Guess who will NOT be elected in November?

22. Well, if Israel is cutting funding for missile defense ...
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (02.14.12)
As part of the defense cuts Israel is implementing to pay for the social spending mandated by the Trajtenberg Committee, is holding up orders for another two Iron Dome batteries, cutting funding for Magic Wand and the Arrow 3. If Israel isn't committed enough to fund its own missile defense, how can it criticize the US for a so far minuscule cutback? (Apropos, the IDF is forced to cutback in a number of other areas as well, including training and orders for the Merkava tank.)

Israel needs alternative energy sources to gas anyway and if a gas shortage is what it takes to wake up the politicians to reality then let the shortages come. Make use of solar energy through self generation, more wind farms in the Golan. We are obsessed with gas be it Egyptian of domestic sources its an obsession that must end.
24. I am voting Republican
k ,   US   (02.14.12)
I admit, I thought the Republican fear mongering about Obama was just fear mongering, but the more I see, the more I think he is dangerous for Israel, I am gonna vote Republican in November assuming it is not Ron Paul
25. israel take the lead
alexi   (02.14.12)
security trumps everything for israelis because of past painful experiences. Bibi is head of the governemnt. Missile defence has to built over everything, laws, health-everything. There s hould be no cut in iron dome or other missile funding period. And obama cutitng israeli assistance. so what? Israel you make up the difference. Go back to the carmel fire. Olmert and others never spent the money for planes etc because he had no feel for security. Yet bibi didn't do anything at first either nor did barak. Once the fire got out of control, bibi and liberman worked fast and got the aid asap and then bibi ensured that the planes would be acquired which they were. Predictably, barak was detached and was a non factor. Are you israeli stupid or what?? You need 10 or 11 iron dome batteries cause hezbollah is going to launch 500-1000 miossiles per day and you have to have some defensive blockers beyond going on the attack and taking firing positions away as well as rocketing shia with each position taken. The terror element has to be felt. the shia population supporting hezbollah has to feel what israelis felt in 2006.
26. I LOVE THIS ARTICLE and COMMENTS
Robert ,   Farmington,wv   (02.14.12)
I love this article and Comments for two reasons (1) its shows Obama's true colors he's going to cut aide to Israel but continue aide to his Muslim brothers and (2) Come November America is going to show how stupid we are for reelecting him for another term. The Chocolate Muslim will go down in history as the worst president America has ever had toward Americans and Israel.
27. Really?
#24 ,   US   (02.14.12)
Sorry to say that but your kinda dumb. IT'S politics for god sake, I'm not a fan of Mr Obama did everything except for what he promised ! So think twice before electing because it seems you elected Mr Obama the first time :)
28. Not true
Toronto, Canada   (02.14.12)
excluding research all aid for military the US gives to Israel has to be used on American manufactures, putting it back in to there economy.

ISRAEL IS FORCED TO CUT DEFENSE SPENDING BECAUSE OF THE REDUCTION IN USA DONE BY OBAMA. THE TWO ARE INTERELATED.

esnuffnstl ,   USA   (02.14.12)
It would be put back in the economy far more efficiently if the money was used on infrastructure in the US (building rapid transit systems has a much higher economic mulitplier effect than building weapons.) What would help the economy even more, perhaps, is not spending the money in the first place (and therefor not borrowing money and increasing the debt.) It also says alot about Isreal that the US requires them to buy US weapons. Almost as if the US Congress believed our good friend Israel would take our money then rush off and buy Russian weapons with it. Surely Israel wouldn't do that, would they? Think about how ungrateful THAT would be.
