1. A RATIONAL PLAYER....
les ,   canada   (02.28.12)
looking of the above picture, i ask, who wouldn't trust a man like that? i really understand the predicament of the US. the last two wars were brutal on them. but think! assume iran gets their nukes (almost a sure thing). let say they wipe israel off the map. what's next? you think they will stop there..ha..ha..those suitcase nukes will explode in europe, the US, and everywhere where islam is resisted. and where it is not!
2. BEST TO IGNORE THIS SILLY MAN
DA URBAN POET ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (02.28.12)
3. What if they are, in fact, NOT rational?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (02.28.12)
“We can’t afford to underestimate our potential adversaries by writing them off as irrational" That's faulty reasoning. We do ourselves no favor by PRESUMING that our foe is rational, when they may be prone to act in ways WE find "irrational". Was Hitler acting rationally when he invaded Russia, or Tojo rational when he attacked Pearl Harbor? Maybe Iran thinks getting a nuclear bomb is eminently rational as a means of advancing their interests, as they see supporting Hizbullah and Hamas as advancing their objective of weakening Israel and driving the US from the region.
4. Rational - Yes
Mike from Tampa ,   Tampa   (02.28.12)
They are rational and even many Israeli politicians and security professionals have admitted it. Read Trita Parsi's book about secret relations between Iran and Israel.
5. dear poet....
les ,   canada   (02.28.12)
didn't we all ignored hitler???
6. Use of the phrase "rational actor"
Li ,   USA   (02.28.12)
Some people, e.g. TBers, think that rhetoric and bluster are a substitute for common sense. They are not. If you do not understand your opponent and its positions, and your ignorance is so broad that you consider them irrational, then you are a threat to your allies.
7. Were the 9/11 attacks rational or irrational?
Steve Klein   (02.28.12)
8. Burried deep in th NY times article was the assesment
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (02.28.12)
that the USA in fact did NOT know the full capabilities of the IDF and the assesments were not much more than a guess. Typically it was where most people would not read it. Not quite a lie of ommission but very NY Times, like Arafat being anything but a thief and a terrorist in one of their articles on the subject.
9. Rational actors do not hope for apocalypse.Iran does
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (02.28.12)
10. Mr Dempsey : His masters ( BHO ) voice !
who cares   (02.28.12)
I'm glad that Israels leaders know exactly whats in Mr Dempseys mind ( one can also easily read his face : it shouts '' betrayal'' ). Israels leaders also know that his master ( BHO ) is a muslim with the goal to destroy Israel ( plus - in the sametime - the USA ) I'm glad that Israel is in the hands of her almighty God - HE constantly watches over her and will go against all of Israels enemies ! Woe to Israels enemies, woe !
11. #6 Li
David ,   USA/Israel   (02.28.12)
If you think that Israel should leave their fate in the hands of the likes of Sillary Clinton and throwup Obama then, it is you who are irrational. And, not only so but crazy also.
12. Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ....
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (02.28.12)
.... judging by the above snap on the left.... looks like he needs an NA meeting.. ..fast!
13. Warning to Iran
ProphetS ,   USA   (02.28.12)
The Iranian terrorist in Bangkok who only succeeded in blowing off his own two Iranian legs is a subtle supernatural warning to Iran: be prepared for unplanned failure (and its awful consequences) should Iran move to harm the Jewish nation.
14. israel's iran strike
joel ,   usa   (02.28.12)
when the time come that israel's existence is treathened by iran, them that's the target time, ha?
15. #4: Trita Parsi
Steve   (02.29.12)
Your authority, Trita Parsi (National Iranian American Council) looks to be an Iranian Mullah-regime advocate in the US; here to further the terror-state's interests. Arash Irandoost, founder of the Pro Democracy Movement of Iran, wrote: "Trita Parsi is not an Iranian-American. How can he represent our interests. Our grievances against NIAC and Trita Parsi are plenty; questions are many. "It is our belief that the Obama Administration is working closely with NIAC to appease the Islamic Republic and bring it to the negotiation table..." "In November 2009, the NIAC came under scrutiny when Washington Times national security correspondent Eli Lake alleged that the organization, registered as a 501(c)(3) educational organization, could be "operating as a foreign lobby in violation of federal law". Lake writes, "Mr. Parsi's history suggests a continuing commitment to changing U.S. policy on Iran, and he has clearly become more influential in Washington since the change of administrations."
16. To nr 6 Li, USA
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.29.12)
Dear Li, I think I am qualified to answer your question but I'm not sure if you are qualified to comprehend my answer to your question. Hairsplittting and rhetorics will not change the fact that Iran intends to acquire nukes, is a a brutal dictatorship that oppresses women, minorities, does express sympathy for Nazism and Hitler, read, produce and consume Hitler's Mein Kampf on a massive scale, suffer from delusions of grandeur, have de facto expansionist and imperialist plans and have either glorified or denied the Holocaust, has financed, trained, educated, equipped and even armed Hamas and Hizbollah for many years. Iran has repeatedly said that they want to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. And IAEA, the USA, the UN, Israel and in fact the whole world knows that Iran is developing weapons of mass destruction - to be more exact - nuclear warheads, and Israel knows that it will be the very first country to be hit. Israel is much closer to Iran than Europe and the USA. A few atom bombs are enough to destroy Israel, whereas a huge amount of nukes would be required to destroy Europe and the USA. Iran has never threatened to destroy America or Europe even though Iran supports a global Islamic empire ruled from Teheran. You Li are worried that gasoline prices will go up in the USA. We Israelis are worried that we will be killed and massacred by Iranian nukes. Do you get the picture? Israel poses no threat to anyone - least of all to its allies, but its allies seem to want to sacrifice Israel to buy some time or security. USSR was a "rational" actor - it avoided confrontation with the USA due to mutual assured destruction. Iran has currently no nukes but still wants to confront an Israeli nuclear power. Just imagine what Iran would do if they had nukes.
17. DISGUSTING DEMPSEY IS A SKUNK
ZIMBI ,   NJUSA   (02.29.12)
18. Rational actors and apocalypse
peter ,   Bisbee USA   (02.29.12)
So "The Samson Option" and the Rejov Masadas, and the "9-11 Mossad dancers" along with Bibis post 9-11 public statements of " this is the best thing to happen for Israel" are celebrations of rational actors? Taking hubris to a suicidal level is rational? Tikkun Olam? Got a flashlight?
19. US Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC
A Brun ,   USA   (02.29.12)
Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was even blunter in his criticism of Dempsey. In reference to a spate of reports claiming that Washington was pressing Israel not to take action against Iran now, Graham said, "People are giving Israel a lot of advice here lately form America. I just want to tell our Israeli friends that my advice to you is never lose control of your destiny. Never allow a situation to develop that would destroy the Jewish state."
20. Dempsey is stupid
George ,   San Francisco, USA   (02.29.12)
Dempsey is stupid if he did not tell Israel to refrain from attacking Iran, an idiotic action under any circumstances. If he only talked about the timing, then he extremely stupid.
21. to no 2
Jennie ,   Israel/US   (02.29.12)
If evryone would follow your way , how would you be able to remain a "POET" and have your opera too ? Some people need to do the job of defending your dreamy life... But hey, you are ok...
22. #5 I MEANT TO IGNORE DEMPSEY
DA URBAN POET ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (02.29.12)
Not the iranians.
23. #16 alexander - excellent post.
solomon ,   bklyn   (02.29.12)
24. Why is this joker Dempsey telling such obvious lies?
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.29.12)
Anyone out there taking him seriously? Unfortunately, yes. He has learned from the Arabs, that when you tell a lie it better be a whopper!
25. I like americans.
ilan ,   nazareth illit   (02.29.12)

26. #16, #23: Small countries want to have nukes
Michael ,   California, USA   (02.29.12)
Can you blame them? Obviously, you do not blame Israel. Iran is a medium size country and it wants to be the leader of the Shia Islamic world in which there are many small countries. Iran needs the nukes to be counted as a superpower. To Iran Israel is potentially a testing ground for their nuclear weapons, nothing more, despite the rhetoric. People like Mr. Li don't comprehend how dangerous are the Iranian ambitions. Israel needs to play it smart and be cool because Iran and Islam threaten the entire world. Taking on Iran by force is way beyond Israeli capability. Much smarter is what the U.S. is doing: trying to contain the Iranian threat and bring a change in Iran's leadership.
27. iran war
haroldburbank ,   canton, ct usa   (02.29.12)
as you can see, the usa is led by compromised feckless generals who do not understand or care about their oaths to defend and protect the usa constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. they support war for about any reason today, real or imagined.
28. #25 Ilan, Special for you, American SMALL sayings:

"Small is beautiful." "Think globally, act locally." "Life is like having a cup of coffee." "Laugh at your mistakes but learn from them…" "Life is not measured by the breaths we take but the moments that take our breath away…"
29. DEAR GENERAL DEMPSEY
DA REGGAE MAN ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (02.29.12)
Sir ,we in Israel do not give a toss as to what you think ,we regard you as a jumped-up and over-inflated buffoon /baloon .Clearer than dat I can not say.
