31. It's all the drinking
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (03.01.12)
Hahaha......in all youth hostels for backpackers around the world ,it's a well-konwn truth that Israelis ALWAYS win drinking contests. Gosh....not even Russians or Englishmen stand a chance when it comes to holding the alcohol. I admit, I didn't stand a chance either . I even gave up before the Israeli women that were taking part......haha. That speaks volumes.
32. sad truth --about Chile
Fernando ,   USA   (03.01.12)
As a Jewish chilean expat living in the USA I can say that my home country is filled with "couch-antisemites," and more generally, "couch-xenophobes." These are people who have never had any contact with Jews, Blacks, Asians or any foreigners for the case being, but are willing to believe anything about them --mostly negative stuff. This due to their lack of curiosity (small-town mindset) and excess of self-righteousness (because of economical and political stability in a troubled region). It remains to be seen if the Chilean society will evolve into a more open and tolerant one. For the time being, lower your expectations.
33. Israeli tourists
Jeff ,   USA   (03.01.12)
The only Israelis I've ever come across outside of Israel were when I went on vacation to Florida a few years ago... I was in the Everglades and I saw a bunch of Hebrew-speaking guys in their 30s arrested by park police for trying to kick the alligators....... if they behaved like that in Chile also then I don't know that it's necessarily "reprehensible anti-Semitism" to call it a little on the obnoxious side
34. ISRAEI YOUTH MUST LEARN BEHAVIOR, NOT EXCUSES
ZIMBI ,   NJUSA   (03.01.12)
COMPARISONS WITH BRITISH ONLY DIMINISHES JEWS WITH RACE TO BOTTOM OF BARREL. SHAME ON SPOILED BRATS AND CLUELESS PARENTS.
35. Lonely Planet should be sued by the State of Israel
Keren ,   IL-BR   (03.01.12)
This is not a way of talking about any people. A tourist guide is supposed to guide people in their travelings and not to incite people agaisnt other people. If they prize peoples, all peoples, now that's a good thing, but to incite people to evil thoughts is punishable and Lonely Planet shoud be punished by Israel for such publishing.
36. I agree - they even bother other Israelis....
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (03.01.12)
37. Why are you surprised?
Ed Stack ,   Boston, USA   (03.01.12)
38. Clearly Antisemitism. Typical of a Spanish Catholic country
Sami ,   New York, USA   (03.01.12)
Clearly Antisemitism. Typical of a Spanish Catholic country. Maybe American Jews should stop going. We are clearly UNWELCOME. Stuff them.
39. #25
AQ ,   Jerusalem   (03.01.12)
So Susya, that's your excuse for Israelis' behavior?! I wont discuss where you got that information from, but it has nothing to do with the subject here. I advise you to be more open minded and not accuse people for someone else's mistakes!
40. Uh-oh! American college kids, look out!
manicdrummer ,   Galilee, Israel   (03.01.12)
You've got some serious competition come Spring Break! Be glad they go to Chile instead of South Padre or Ft. Lauderdale.
41. Double Standard
DavidM ,   USA   (03.01.12)
The article about Israeli tourists shows a double standard. There is plenty of bad behavior from other nations that is not even mentioned. Hooligans from Europe trash cities when their soccer team loses. Other Europeans traverse Southeast Asia in search of sexual encounters with underage children that is illegal and immoral. The alleged behavior of Israeli tourists pales in comparison to these actions.
42. Israeli vs. non-Israeli
New Yorker ,   U.S.A.   (03.01.12)
I have been to South America - Chile included - multiple times. I have seen tourists from all over the world. I met Israelis and I met European and North American tourists. The Israeli ones were no better or worse than their counterparts from elsewhere. In fact, I should say that the French travelers were most rude in their claiming whatever space they came to occupy as a group, all to themselves, with no regard for anyone else around them. On the other hand, most of the Israelis I have met were friendly if somewhat loud, but never offensive. This thing of singling out Israeli travelers for negativity is anti-semitism in its purest form.
43. Israel is cauing world hate the most
David ,   USA   (03.01.12)
This has been the norm not just in Chile but all over South America and Europe and Asia. The Israeli tourist is only causing further shame and hate for his own nation. I have seen these Israeli tourist and they have zero respect or manners. Very sad
44. Israeli manners are the worse in the world
David ,   USA   (03.01.12)
I think most of the world hate towards Israel is a byproduct of how many Israelis act as they travel to many countries on earth. If you never meet an Israel and all you have is some obnoxious, rude 20 something kid then how on earth would you ever support them. Shameful the country does not care about basic manners.
45. Idiot
Eli ,   Canada   (03.01.12)
Nechama, you are in Idiot. Plain and simple.
46. Reflect
Temujin ,   Canada   (03.01.12)
Raphael, I think with all this feedback, instead of getting defensive and automatically referencing the holocaust to support your defence, one should take this as a chance to REFLECT on what is being said. You cannot change how other people see you. Clearly, with all the feedback here, it's not just the opinions of a few. This is what is being seen by others. People can continue living in denial, or humbly face the music and find ways of rectifying something they don't like. And please, don't bring in the Palestinians into this.
47. # 20
Birdi ,   Israel   (03.01.12)
Shame, you must be really tired as you are seeing words that are not written. I cannot see the word "Iran'' written in post # 2.
48. Many Israelis make the French look polite
Sarah ,   Israel   (03.01.12)
Not all, but many (especially secular kids).... just as the article says. It's the truth, not anti-semitism.
49. Two questions
Beauchard   (03.01.12)
First question: are there antisemites in Chile? Answer: yes definitely. Second question: do many young Israelis on vacation act like loud-mouthed, aggressive, boorish brats. Answer: yes definitely.
50. #29 As are many British and Irish tourists!
Phil ,   Ireland   (03.01.12)
Your point being??
51. sorry to hear that
shai ,   haifa   (03.01.12)
Im Chilean my self and i'm so sorry to read about what Chilean media is reporting, unfortunately, its no news in Chile. There is lots of hate towards Jews in Chile. There are to many old nazis recruiting new members, and the normal feeling and knowledge about Israel and Jews in Chile its quite medieval. We are still been blamed for killing jesus and that we are ought to pay for that the rest of our lives. That is what I heard so many times while I lived in Chile, in the school, on the streets, on news papers, politicians ,friends, non friends, even a college of mine a few years ago said to me, do not trust the Jews, the still from you and are greedy.. Now,a lot has been done to change that, but it is a long way,I know many wonderful Chileans and they want us to come and talk about Israel,do not forget that too. Regards from Haifa, Shai Perez
52. Israeli tourists show bad behaviour?
tiki ,   belgium   (03.01.12)
They are lucky that the English,Dutch,German, Scandinavian, Irish, & all the other European Holiday Drunks haven't come over to their country yet. Then they would appreciate the sometimes loud and maybe sometimes rude Israeli's. This comment is nothing less than 'Anti Jewish slander, the pandemic the world is suffering from, once again!
53. Reputation of rude Israelis
Jossi ,   Tel Aviv   (03.01.12)
I can only join you in your comment. I'm living in Israel more than 10 years and with each year passing I see the rudeness of our kids becoming more accentuated. I experienced them outside Israel many times, and objectively it is a disturbing behaviour. Unfortunately the whole establishment and citizenry has still to realize it. A double shame, and a good percentage of parents aren't any better.
54. Catholics
Dan ,   Brooklyn   (03.01.12)
Chili is a catholic country, of course they hate Jews. I don’t know why lonely planet plays along with this hatred. Wanna see them mention how the beer swigging brits behave when they go on vacation and there is a soccer match going on.
55. The problem is found in post #2
Kevin Peace ,   Canada   (03.01.12)
Where a silly attempt is made to deflect criticism. If you were accused of murder, would your defense be that there are other murderers out there? I've encountered rude tourists from almost every nation on the planet, but there's only two where these people seem to be in the majority: the UK and Israel. Actually, I've probably met more nice British tourists than rude ones, so that only leaves Israel Why is this? Part of the reason is that some Israelis refuse to look at themselves objectively. If you keep hearing the same criticisms over and over (and from a variety of sources) it might be a good idea to give the criticism serious thought--instead of a knee-jerk defense where the criticism is deflected (like #2 attempts.) Seriously, you do yourself no favors acting this way.
56. Really bad reputation is warranted?
RCCA ,   USA   (03.01.12)
It is disappointing to hear that Israelis have a reputation for being rude, and act like they are owed something. I had a bad experience with an Israeli roommate who was totally dishonest and took advantage of my generosity, as if he was owed -- but I wanted to believe this was just one individual and his fiance, I didn't want to believe lots of Israelis were that way.
57. And the State of Israel should also sue "caras"
Keren ,   IL-BR   (03.02.12)
and all other "tourist guides"and gossip publishings that act in this way against one people-Israel. And there are quite a lot of these publishings. It is not that hard to find them out and teach them ethical behavior-if not by gentle words,by LAW! See if any publisher dares to show muhamed having his ugly face mocked after muslums gave their message around the world. Israel can do it better: using Law.National and international Law!
58. IT IS EVIL TO GENERALIZE ABOUT ONE PEOPLE!
Keren ,   IL-BR   (03.02.12)
This is evil! This is the same old antisemitic pattern:they, the goym, want us to behave;to behave their ways.If we are "kind"and behave their ways, they stand with us,but if not... This is antisemitic! And I repeat:there are many "guides"and stupid publishing like that bs "caras"who are acting in such pernicious way against Israel and that should be stoped!
59. well-known disgrace
rick ,   walnut creek   (03.02.12)
this is a disgrace. the govt should not issue passports for foreign travel until the applicants have: 1) been instructed that they have an obligation to behave decently abroad; 2) been advised that they will be held responsible for damage that they do abroad; and, 3) sign an agreement to obey the law when they travel and accept responsibilty for damage caused by them abroad. IT IS A DISGRACE for kids to feel that they can act like animals when they travel abroad.
60. An oleh's perspective
David ,   Tel Aviv   (03.01.12)
Unfortunately this story is something I witnessed first hand here in Israel and while travelling to Thailand recently. There is a significant portion of the Israeli population that are of lower social class who are really badly educated and for whom violence is a normal part of life. They think the world owes them everything. They are also the ones that are complained about abroad. Mind you, they are also a major pest within Israel! The only places they can afford to travel to are the countries that are cheap. Most of them are in South America and Asia. The army excuse story is crap. These ill mannered kids were a-holes way before the army and most likely had to be baby sitted on during their "military service". If anything the army teaches a normal person humility, an appreciation for life, and respect toward fellow humans. It just happens that this crappy part of the population congregates in Thailand, Greece, and Chile but they are not a representation of all Israelis. Fortunately there are plenty of good and respectful Israelis to counterbalance. I just wish they could represent more. Israel needs to reform education asap!
