1. This is what Obamacare will do to Ameria's doctors when
Rivkah   (03.14.12)
they find out they will all be paid the same wage, regardless of specialty. Why should doctors work at low wages after 20 or more years of education from 1st grade to getting licensed?
2. If anone outside healthcare professions had a clue on how
Rivkah   (03.14.12)
much time outside of working hours is required to keep up with the literature, they would understand healthcare workers are unpaid for much of their working hours which are spent studying.
3. Several points...
Tuvia Schertzman,MD ,   Betar Ilit, Israe;   (03.14.12)
I work as an anesthesiologist at a Tel Aviv hospital. I have to work about an 80 hour week to make about 1/4 of what I make in the US for a 40 hour week. However, there are nice things about working in Eretz Yisrael that most secular Jews would not appreciate. Most importantly the mitzvot involved. I also suffer from chronic exhaustion but when you see Jews who are near death one cannot turn his back. IT is a big mesirat nefesh.
4. Overworked & Underpaid
SK ,   Tel Aviv   (03.14.12)
My wife just spent almost a month in Tel Hashomer and I can tell you that these people work incredibly hard for little pay. I wish the Haredim/Shasnikim that populate the materity ward would pitch in with some tax dollars to help them out a bit.
5. Thank You Tuvia..Its Jews like you that enable Israel to
Al   (03.14.12)
live not withstanding the rather poor leadership of the country. Its only bacause there are Jews like you in Israel that I feel hearten as my only two children live in Israel. I read Ynet and other Israeli websites on a daily basis and at times I am very discouraged to see what kind of place my sons have chosen to live in. You give me hope that maybe they made the right decision. Thank you again.
6. 3 Tuvia Schertzman, M.D: Try drinking a tablespoonful of
Rivkah   (03.14.12)
Barley Green in water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning as an energizer. And think about the bank-on account in HaShem's Kingdom you are adding to each day with your mitzvohs of overworking for underpay. The low wages in Israel are compensated by the wonder and joy of being near the Temple, the Kotel, the land anciently given to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I was happy in Israel in a way I could never be happy anywhere else. HaShem and Michael the Archangel are there protecting and nurturing and growing the people and the economy by blessing the return of the people to their ancient homeland.
7. wife of an anesthesiologist-truth and idea
Riva ,   Israel   (03.15.12)
My husband is on-call usually three days per week, that is around 25 hour shifts in order to earn a decent salary. He's 56, and i think this practice of over using our doctors until they collapse should be outlawed!! but there is an extreme shortage of good anesthesiogists and lack of well trained doctors in general. We came from the US where he obtained the highest credentials. with this, it took him years to obtain a salary line and to finally get a reasonable offer even though there were many poorly qualified and foreign doctors employed at the time. often, there is bad politics and jeaously going on in the hospital. Some doctors are afraid of loosing their job because there is a limited amount of salary lines to offer despite a salary which should be higher. it is hard for a nice, caring doctor to handle all the stuff from other workers, esp. with the increased work load. And another thing, israel is willing to employ very poorly trained and often uncaring foreign doctors, instead of utilizing another potential resource which i think is waiting and willing-recruiting hareidi men/women who exception potential, training them with some "mechina" courses to enter medicine because often, this group is willing to accept the lower salary and most likely will not leave Israel!
8. Teachers too.
Mike ,   NY   (03.15.12)
A teacher in Israel with an MA would have spent five years in university, and gets paid five times less than their counterparts in N. America. In Israel there is absolutely no prestige in being a teacher. Both education and healthcare are in jeopardy in Israel - perhaps the two most important areas for quality of life. Raise salaries significantly and attract the best doctors and teachers to the country, the flourishing will follow.
9. Two things missing
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (03.15.12)
That doctors are overworked is true, but who is to blame? Why aren't more people licensed? Are rumors of a guild true? Also, how many doctors working in other countries want to leave their profession? These numbers seem to be the same for any profession I know. As for the fact that people who paid their own tuition by studying in a foreign country instead of getting a subsidized degree in Israel. Nothing new here, you value what you pay for.
