1. A question:
Zeev, Haifa   (03.15.12)
This raises an interesting question: Do they have separate secular/religious markets in Teheran? Istanbul?
2. Before you Rage...
Professor Z ,   Jerusalem   (03.15.12)
To preempt all of the posters who are sure to rant and rave about the Haredim, I want to call attention to the fact that this is great news. They want to have gender segregation; they can set up their own market. What they do on their own should be no business of anyone else, so long as they are not infringing on others.
3. #2
shua ,   jerusalem   (03.15.12)
#2 you are 100% correct! Even more on that note, thtis creates jobs for the haredi public. It is their lives let them do what they want. The festival insulted their beliefs, so they acted, just like all the "hadrat nashim" people getting on the buses to protest. Please stop comparing the haredim to Teharan, Saudi Arebia, etc..., If you don't understand the haredi seperation rule them ask, don't mock.
4. i am not religious and agree completely with 2 and 3!
orli ,   jerusalem   (03.15.12)
5. #3- Shua: Don't mock
Zeev, Haifa   (03.15.12)
I agree with your advice, not to mock. My comment was in response to OUR ongoing mockery of those backward Iranians. I assume you have seen those endless cartoons showing black-clad Iranian women, with only the eyes visible... I suggest that the Iranians are human, like us. They have their fanatics,- perhaps like we have...
6. ... and then, they begining live without OUR tax money ...
Worker ,   TLV   (03.15.12)
7. seperate markets
Yoel ,   Israel   (03.15.12)
The haredi community are the ones who are encouraging hatered between Jews and non-Jews, this is taking religon too far.
8. it will not happen
zvika ,   Jerusalem   (03.15.12)
this is a provocation & a spin of the Haredi community. Jerusalem will stay pluralistic and not separated according to sects and etnic groups. that is the beauty of Jerusalem and we will not let Jerusalem to become a city of Getos...! It is also against the law not to allow women to shop together with men, so, this 'fantasy' is just a wishful thinking of some extreemists.
9. #2 agree totally - great idea let them
rebecca ,   Modiin   (03.15.12)
But it will be interesting to watch the economics at work. I think the machane Yehuda markets it too full, and that there are enough people to have more than one, but I wonder if people will move to shop elsewhere. It will be interesting. I wonder how soon it will open.
10. Why are these guys so obsessed with sex?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (03.15.12)
They can't even shop without worrying about being turned on? That is just sick.
11. I say let them do it! It will create jobs which what they
Rachel ,   US   (03.15.12)
NEED!!
12. 10 Better than being indifferent..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.15.12)
to their own wife, which is the case of many secular men.
13. An alternative state
Zeev ,   TA   (03.15.12)
Perhaps we should create an alternative state for the haredim, where they can live by their own rules and of the fruit of their own labor. What good is it to create jobs for them if they don't want to work?
14. Say no to religious coercion...
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (03.15.12)
and misogyny! But instead of some people still defend the charedim way of supressing women. I wonder!
15. # 2 Professor Z ! Yes,it is Kosher,but it smells,
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (03.15.12)
On the cards-complete separation of the sexes, which means in the female market, haredi female truck drivers will deliver the goods, and who will do the lifting ?. many years back,i read that on a Greek island, inhabited by monks, the monks banned women to set foot on the island, including animal females, after all monks and haredim have a lot in common ,both are very suspicious of women, women have only one goal in life, to turn away good men from the right path, like the ocean sirens, who sing beautifully in the night, to lure the sailors to their death.
16. Haredim working on alternative to Machne Yehuda market
Richard ,   Queens,USA   (03.15.12)
Does this mean that all the shop owners will be women to serve their women shoppers or that Haredi women won't have to shop, since only their sons and husbands will be allowed into the market? Does shopping in a male only market in lieu of studying in a Yeshiva still exempt you from Army Service?
17. They will be the majority in the country by birthrate, they
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (03.15.12)
will dictate so get ready to live under their rules.
18. #14 Ze'ev
Professor Z ,   Jerusalem   (03.15.12)
Is it really suppression if Haredi women prefer gender segregation as well?
19. What's the big deal?
(03.16.12)
They have it already in so many stores for years. It's just another shot from the secular media to their daily ridiculing of haredim.
20. Seculars: Start having kids!
Yehoshua Friedman ,   Kochav Hashachar IL   (03.16.12)
I am in favor of there being secular Jews in the next generation. The religious world needs competition. More secular people need to have more kids.
21. "attracted hundreds"
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (03.16.12)
the Jerusalem politicians give gigs to their non-talented friends to sing at the market; then claim that hundreds of people drove to Jerusalem just to see it.
22. # 17 they will be the majority by birthrate, and birthright,
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (03.16.12)
But remember, the grand fathers of the founders of Israel were haredi,or observent Jews, including Theodor Herzel, that one of his ancesters was a Rav in Hungary,so,the grand children of the haredim will see the light and become ardent zionists, history and evolution are slow, but decisive.
23. # 21 " unattracted"
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (03.17.12)
blue grass ! on top of being untalented, those female singers are also homely,so,they pose no threat to the female fearing haredi audience.
24. Get the facts first.
Rochel ,   Jerusalem, israel   (03.20.12)
#15 I think you have been either terribly uninformed or are just ignorant of the truth. Although I do not agree in any way with the complete separation of the sexes, I do know that the reasoning is not because of a belief in the inherent 'badness' of women. Haredim (and others) believe that jewish women are holy, pure and beautiful, and that men have innate animal desires which should be withheld from all but their own wives. They want to keep themselves from temptation at all costs in order to honor their own wives and themselves. They are meant to be so confined from woman so that when they marry, the first touch will possess the power of electricity and will remain so within the sanctity of their own unions. As I said, I do not agree with this complete separation, but let us not denigrate others for their own beliefs, especially not when we may not understand the reasoning behind it. There are lunatics and fanatics of all kinds, in every group, who tend to distort truth and offer ideas which are twisted from reality, they are not limited to Haredim. We live in Israel, we have enough enemies naturally without adding to our discomfort within our own.
25. Haredi birthrate
American Israeli ,   Israel   (03.21.12)
You obviously don't live in Israel. They are not the majority and I don't think their birthrates are as great as necessary to become the majority. The secular are by far the majority, and with examples like this, it isn't likely many secular will be inspired to turn religious. Segregated shopping is ridiculous.
