1. I wouldn't worry
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.28.12)
At the rate Israeli Arabs are going, with the increasing treasonous behavior, they will be -- er -- invited to leave the State for a country more to their liking. They have 22 to choose from. And what is wrong with the Jewish state having a Jewish character? As long as the haredi community remains Zionist, I have no worries. The Neturei Karta and the Satmer breed like rabbits, but since they do not recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel -- and visit Iran and petition the King of Jordan for permission to pray at the Kotel -- I have no problem shipping them off to a country or countries more to their liking, either. I wonder if the Satmer are aware that their particular cult is a corruption of the words "Saint Mary."
2. IF TRUE THEN ISRAEL WILL BE TOTALLY BANKRUPT
(03.28.12)
3. Would the last one to leave please switch off the lights
Haim ,   TA   (03.28.12)
What a scarry thought.
4. stop worrying
milsoni   (03.28.12)
all the fit haredi are going into the idf, no exemptions. In the meantime, they have to take martial arts 5 days per week. arabs will be associated with jordan for citizenship and not one arab will be allowed into israel as recommened by the previous government. Most disloyal arabs will be leaving israel as the coming wars make their staying unsafe.
5. #1 You redefine the word denial
Nour ,   One-State   (03.28.12)
Actually, you also epitomize racism, hatred, and shear violence. You're truly a primitive little man hiding in a basement, aren't you Sarah? Why don't you grow a pair and come down to the Middle East to force your "transfer" fantasy?
6. hassidim
andrew brown ,   usa   (03.28.12)
of course you havnt counted all the french and american jews who will be coming in the next 25 years, french jews will be coming very soon
7. cbs is known for its statistics fallacies
trumpeldor   (03.28.12)
therefore, I ... yawn . Only H.SHEM,may predict correctly !
8. Israel made the dessert bloom, can do wonders
David ,   Boston, USA   (03.28.12)
Why so much negativity? Whats the problem? More people means more creative idea to defend Israel, to beat cancer, to feed the world. Israel is also a melting pot of ideas, ethnicities, religious beliefs. Embrace it and work with it. Look at those life expectancy numbers too, wow. Kol Hakavod. Be solution oriented, not problem oriented. You get better results.
9. World Peace 2050
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (03.28.12)
Demographics depend on a number of things. Forecasting future trends depends on a number of factors. The model that will prevail for the Holy Land, Middle East and World by 2050 will see traditional families with an average of three children. The dominant belief system will be ethical monotheism. The petty divisions between the various sects will break down over time. This study sounds like it has a political intent.
10. Utter nonsense
Sidney ,   USA   (03.28.12)
Nobody can predict ten years ahead much less 40. Anybody who has ever taken engineering courses knows the folly of extrapolation.
11. I predict civil war in, oh say, 2059
Charles   (03.28.12)
As seculars decrease, the likelihood of civil war increases.
12. #5
Shlomo   (03.28.12)
You rock Nour. I reckon Sarah is really a bloke too, using a nom-de-plume.
13. With the rate of baalei tshuvot
Benjamin ,   Ramat HaSharon   (03.28.12)
growth of haredi population, Jewish immigration and secular emigration, we can expect Israel to finally become a truly Jewish Torah state with religious leaders as it should be in the very very near future.
14. May ALL our Jewish numbers increase!!! Jews = Jews
Yochanan ,   Y'layim, ISRAEL   (03.28.12)
15. Isn't the world coming to an end in Dec 21 2012?
ab ,   theRock   (03.28.12)
Yes, 'THE END' to secularism and rebellion against G-d. In which case there can only be peace.
16. If land must be divided due to "demographic threat" ...
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (03.28.12)
There are some who insist on dividing the land due to a pending "Arab majority" west of the Jordan. Thus, to preserve a Jewish democratic majority, the Palestinians must be "lopped off" with their own state. (Of course, that still lives an Arab majority west of the Jordan at some future date, only divided between two states.) So if this latest projection is correct, will there be future subdivisions such that the non-haredi, non-Arab population has a place they can call there own? I don't think so. That's not to say a future Arab-haredi majority doesn't present a slew of problems. And we don't have to imagine such a future because IT'S ALREADY HERE. Just take a look at Bnei Brak or Jerusalem, the two poorest cities in Israel. Jerusalem today ALREADY has a majority that is non-Zionist (if not anti-Zionist). If that's Israel's future, then Israel's future is bleak. Such a country would not be defensible, never mind economically viable.
17. It is a hard reading, very hard to take.
Michael ,   California, USA   (03.28.12)
Clearly, three states are needed: Secular, Haredi and Arab. The demographic factor is relentless.
18. Remember "Future Shock" of the 70's? By that learned & very
tom ,   tel aviv   (03.28.12)
thick tome of predictions, scientific analysis for the near future, we were supposed to eat garbage from the gutters in the overcrowded slum-cities of the western world by the year 2010. Leave prophecies & statistics to the true believers.... But (Allah the Merciful forbid) should that come to pass, we'd be oh so screwed!
19. Sarah B lives in a fantasy land
Daoud ,   Ramallah   (03.28.12)
"She" believes that one day Israel will evict its Arab population in front of the eyes of the world, and this way Israel can keep all the land and maintain its Jewish character. Too bad for her and other like-minded people, this is nothing more than a dream that will not be based on reality. There are only two realities- a 2 state solution based on the 1967 borders with agreed land swaps, or 1 state with equal rights for all citizens. Israel is destroying the 2 state option, so looks like 1 state is the new path. That is becoming a popular idea here now.
20. The haredi mistery
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (03.28.12)
I do not understand that problem. In Hungary at the end of the XIX century 60-70 % of jews were ortodox (haredis) included my both grandfathers. But just before the shoah this number declined significantly to 30%. A lot of jews left the conservative community, however they remained to be jews. Is this natural way totally unknown in Israel ?
21. # 20 Istvan, why Jews in Hungary,
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (03.28.12)
Chekoslovakia,Transilvania, turned away from ultra ortodox to ortodox, and from ortodox to reform, because till 1848,Jews were not permitted to live in the big cities,so,when the Jews were given some civil rights, and settled in the big cities, and engaged in commerce and higher education, they were influenced by the none Jewish population, and discarded ghetto life, one more thing, the Hungarian government did not provide food, housing, schooling,to the Jewish or the general population,in Israel, the haredim have very little contact with the outside world, and the government provides everything,so why change relatively a comfortable life, beside,in Hungary haredim had to serve in the army, which is not the case in Israel.
22. #20 Istvan, It would be if it wasn't for the welfare.
Michael ,   California, USA   (03.28.12)
Israel continues to support Haredim in their fanaticism. The Haredim in Israel today are similar to those in Hungary and Poland early in the 20-th century. Unfortunately, the political constellation always allowed religious to participate in and extract welfare payments from the government in Israel. It is hard to believe this will change with the next Knesset, but it just might. The number of Haredim would drop drastically if government support of them (the Yeshiva fees, large families subsidies, welfare to unemployed, release from military duties, and more) would stop. The solution rests with the Israeli voter.
23. Israel for Jews and Jordan for Arabs it is final solution,
E,M Jordan is Pales ,   SF   (03.28.12)
We are aware of Arabs dream for future of Jewish State and we will not let Israel become second Lebanon either Syria or Iraq beside we already compromised our historic land which is 5 times bigger than State of Israel and that is Jordan with 75% Palestinian population, like Jews that have moved from Islamic nations the Israelis Arabs should move to Jordan.
24. haredim majority
gadot ,   herzlia   (03.28.12)
who will defend the country? who will pay for all the services they use? my children will be in another country.they pay high taxes and work where you need higher education.
25. Much sooner ,...
split ,   US   (03.28.12)
They didn't consider an exodus of sane Israelis ,...
26. Long Prediction
Zivron   (03.28.12)
Chaos theory suggests otherwise imprecise predictions . Its time for the secular to have more children and the haredim to get jobs in computor and health industry there will not be the money to support them as israel goes into massive offensive and defensive security state mode if it attacks iran or does not huge nuclear shelters and escape plans and thermonuclear and other defenses need be financed . The haredim will need emigrate to get jobs and the isrealiarbs will have to be treated equally if they have thenature to live in peace with the jews security will be in the bulk Jewish controlled and hopefully more moral . No more price tags and destruction of olive trees the idf ought respect the religious and the religios the idf in internal religious matters and put criminal murderes and injurers in jail for life -lifefor life stripe for stripe toot for tooth Talmudic version.
27. #8
EZ   (03.28.12)
#8 Yours is one of the only comments on this website that doesn't spout hate or indulge in jingoistic rhetoric. Hopefully the majority of Israeli Jews, secular, national religious and haredi will come to think like you. That is what built the state. As for the Arabs, they could have been (still could be) cultural ambassadors between neighboring states and Israel. Some clearly are. These are invaluable to Israel and my guess is all Israelis would like to see them as part of the nation. But there is a large fraction of Arabs (sometimes seems like a majority) that sees Israel as temporary and works actively towards its demise by political, social and sometimes military/violent attacks. There is only so much attack from within that any nation can tolerate.
28. If Neville Chamberlain Obama wins reelection
