1. I want to see CHABAD in charge of Israel.
Efi ,   Amerika   (04.28.12)
2. He is correct.
Maurice ,   Montreal   (04.28.12)
"Herzl did not speak of a Jewish state, but rather, about a state for Jews," "A state based on Jewish law is a religious state; it's Iran," I completely agree.
3. WAR OF RACE$

4. Demographics
Sagi   (04.28.12)
cannot be argued with. The fate of Israel is already sealed. The religious nuts will continue to grow and as the threat increases the seculars will leave. This will be our downfall. Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin.
5. Mr Mayor This A Unfair Comparison
(04.28.12)
First of All Israel Serves Ha Shem, iran serves Evil, your personal comment is self serving. Your are intitled to Your Oppinion, Israel is A Light Upon The World. For the balance there is Light and Dark, iran represents All Darkness, Evil Encarnate, so there is A Differance. Deep down in your Heart you know this. Any mayor or the equivalent in iran Has No Heart just Cold Dead Flesh, this is The Differance Mr Mayor. שבת שלום/ברוך הא שם
6. I am also secular and my advice to this
olim hadashim ,   tel aviv/israel   (04.28.12)
gentleman. Why do you not apply to be the mayor of Berlin or London ?This is the Land of Israel.
7. #4
Alex   (04.28.12)
Utter BS. It's a matter of time when the Haredim will have to stop living of welfare and start working, their lifestyle is not compatible with a normal society. I say, we begin by shipping the Neturei Karta to Iran and if other Haredim don't want to support a Jewish DEMOCRATIC state they should be stripped of their citizenships, just like with the Israeli arabs should be forced to give an oath.
8. A Secular Jewish state...
Avi ,   New Delhi   (04.28.12)
...Is a complete oxymoron. We have a "Jewish" state that has gay pride parades, shops that sell pork and soldiers that know nothing of their heritage. A Jewish state with a populace that is more committed to Jewish tradition (This is already beginning to happen according to polls) will be a better place for Jews as it will actually encourage them to be Jews and not Hebrew speaking atheist "Israelis" with Jewish grandparents. The idea that this mayor is comparing the Halacha of the Torah with the Sharia of the Iranian mullahs reflects the typical ignorance of a secular Israeli towards his own heritage.
9. religion majority
zvi ,   Yerushalaim   (04.28.12)
So seculars stop seating late in cafes and restaurants and start reproducing, otherwise the democracy will succeed and you will have in Tel- Aviv religion majority. Other choice is dictatorship of proletariat (we heard this already some where). But I doubth that anti-religion seculars attending nightly Tel-Aviv's caffes are proletarians.
10. Mayor Huldai is picking up a fight
Christian ,   Sweden   (04.28.12)
with the ultra orthodox Jews and at the same time he is whining about the evil with a civil war. Now, that is interesting! And no, the Temple was not ruined mainly by civil war. It was ruined by the Jewish resurrection against Rome, but the defeat was hastened by civil war. And, yes, it does not seem very intelligent for secular Israel to got to war against ultra orthodox Jews in a situation where Iraq is going nuclear and your surroundings are turning into a very volatile state. Surely it is urgent in dangerous times to keep together and make compromises and not to breake up the status quo between secular and religious Jews? Would it really be too much of a sacrifice for the seculars to abstain from pig barbecue in the streets and public transportation on the Shabbat? The haredim should of course agree to a compromise on the curriculum in the schools. And dear mayor, if it comes to the worst, would it still not be preferable to live under Jewish law and not sharia?
11. SEX ON DA BEACH
DA URBAN POET ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (04.28.12)
Well ,those who despise judaism can always witness gang-bangs on the beaches of Tel-aviv in broad daylight.
12. #5, #8 -- Those aren't differences
Yoni   (04.28.12)
Believe it or not, the Iranians also think that their made-up magic fairies are the righteous ones.
13. Depressing future
aaron ,   haifa   (04.28.12)
I agree with #4 and the Mayor. Israel doesn't have a good future outlook at all. External: -Enemies everywhere (except Cyprus and maybe Jordan) -EU turning into Eurabia -US getting less and less (economic and political) power Internal: -Ultra-Orthodox having the highest birth rate in the whole country (7-8 children in average) -Israeli Arabs and Palestinians having a high birth rate too, while the secular birth rate is low -a split-up government which is constantly struggling with each other If demographics doesn't change and if the government doesn't do anything to integrate the Orthodox into the society (cutting the welfare, making compulsory school curriculum), then Israel will have a very depressing future. An Israel run by Ultra-Orthodox will make the majority of secular and moderate Israelis emigrate. And then I ask you: who will work? Who will pay taxes? Who will serve in the IDF?
14. Sof Sof
Ben ,   USA / Israel   (04.28.12)
Huldai gets it, enough is done for the free-loaders already, without having them dictate our travel plans on Shabat!! 120% behind Huldai - without him......next stop Riyadh
15. #12
Avi ,   New Delhi   (04.28.12)
Name for me a time in recent history where Orthodox Jews stoned women, hanged gays, or indoctrinated an entire generation of their children to commit martyrdom? Of course you can't. This should make it glaringly obvious that there is no moral comparison between Iran/Islam and Israel/Judaism.
16. Partition of a different sort
Avramele   (04.28.12)
Create de facto the free liberal democratic state of greater Tel Aviv with a flourishing Hebrew culture, a tolerant life style and a productive economy. The dati community believes in creating a fence of increased religiosity around its interpretation of Torah. So be it. The secular and the moderate traditionalists must now create our own fence of humanism and rationalism.
17. Just from reading the title....
Dr Harry ,   Jerusalem   (04.28.12)
then get the hell out of here. Israel is the Land of the Jews. If you have a problem with that, then leave. As a Mayor you should be utterly ashamed for your words. You want to be a Devout secular, there is the rest of the world at your disposal to live your life. If is so ironic that this weeks Torah readings is about being Holy, because God is Holy & His Land is Holy. God spit out the people who defiled HIS Land. DO YOU WANT TO BE NEXT???????????
18. # 7 Alex
Sagi   (04.28.12)
I agree with every word you said, problem is, it ain't gonna happen.
19. PLEASE DECIDE.........IS IT IRAN
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (04.28.12)
Or Saudi Arabia that was mentioned. The caption reads Iran whilst the article,Saudi Arabia.Which one was it as the difference between the two countries is tremendous............one falters, the other doesn't.
20. #13 is correct
Kevin P ,   --   (04.28.12)
You just have to read ynet talkbacks to see the racist and bigoted Israelis just itching for Israel to adopt far-right policies. Nothing would doom Israel quicker.
21. Secular Israelis say: we live here for now.
Michael ,   California, USA   (04.28.12)
Secular Israelis have so much fun living at the moment that they do nothing to secure continuation in the future. They do nothing while the demographic bomb ticks. Secular Israelis need a plan how to rescue the country from becoming Iran or another black hole on the face of this earth. Take the initiative, Mr. Mayor, or your future will only be good if you leave the country.
22. Haredim vs Haredim
Amnon ,   Safed   (04.28.12)
Long before the Haredim become the majority in Israel (scheduled to be c2030) they will terminally fall out with each other. As Gold Meir said way back in 1965: "I am not afraid of a war between Jews and Arabs. I am not afraid of a war between Secular Jews and Haredi Jews. But I am TERRIFIED of a war between Haredim and Haredim!!"
23. USA does not LIKE ISRAEL
STREET SCENE ,   USA   (04.28.12)
We really dont. AMERICANS ARE SO SO SICK of the hypocrisy and the RACSIM and the mooching off the USA . we are really sick of ISRAEL. thanks
24. so scared
mike north ,   karmiel israel   (04.28.12)
The mayor of a major city in a reborn Jewish state is scared of the haredi control of his lifestyle. What great lifestyle is that-no concern for torah values-everything goes.Where was your great outcry at the in-full-view gangbang on your beach-you are a disgrace. The 'disaster"you talk about is your bankrupt educational system. It is a well known fact that secular families are sending their kids to torah based educational facilities because they are disappointed with the other.Yes the haredim are producing much more than the general population as the seculars are opting for alternate lifestyles instead of getting married and creating successful happy families to keep our nation continuing their amazing survival record. So stop your continued whining and get a life!!!!!
25. Huldai is a publicity whore.
Ilan   (04.28.12)
Tel Aviv needs leadership not grandstanding loud mouth politicians.
26. Devout secular
Shmuel Katz ,   Modiin Illit   (04.28.12)
Thats a weird way of putting it.
27. The world already sees us as such,
Elad ,   Houston/Israel   (04.28.12)
"Israel is currently the only state in the world that funds an education system without having control over the curriculum, Huldai said, referring to haredi schools. This state of affair is a "disaster," Says it all. I believe the only place for haredim is Brooklyn.
28. Welfare Mooches
Cindy ,   USA   (04.28.12)
Israel, out of goodwill, originally allowed for the yeshivas and rabbis--WITHOUT REQUIRING THEM TO WORK OR CONTRIBUTE TO THE JEWISH STATE. No one back in the 50s 60s 70s thought the Haredi would take advantage of such generosity. But since they are nothing more now, than a "Man's Club for Eternal Freebies" courtesy of the REST of the Jewish State, it's high time to CUT THEIR BENEFITS. Select a set and elected number (a small number --elected by their own groups) of rabbis and yeshiva students to remain on the public dole, and force the rest to work for a living by stopping their checks. They can start with agricultural and infrastructure projects, courtesy of the generosity of the State, then progress from there--learning to work the same way everyone else must. STOP feeding the beast. It will either die or slink away. And just like the Moslem world--the only ones who will suffer in this process will be the women and children. Allow the women to report abuse and give them jobs and child care so they can provide for their children. Very few will simply watch their children starve, and those that allow it can have their children attended to by Social Services equivalent. If you don't draw a hard line and enforce it now, it will be too late and these freeloaders and oppressors will make it impossible for everyone else. They are creating their own ghettos, which is a danger to the State of Israel. Stop it now and teach them, like Peres said "They are not masters of the Land . . . "
29. A fox wishing the cow,to be...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.28.12)
successful at rabbit hunting, and the cow wishing the fox to find lots of hay and forage. That is how the secular Jews, who wish the orthodox Jews to lead a secular life, sound. And vis versa. Let each society excel in his field, and make serious steps to live in harmony with all Israeli societies.
30. SOME BALANCE NEEDED
DA URBAN POET ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (04.28.12)
Some sense of balance / eliquibrium and common sense are required . We should avoid becoming a fantatical lunatic haredi state and should also avoid the other extreme which expunges and disregards judaism and standards of decency . Do israelis really wish to become like other countries where crime is rife and folk can not walk the streets in safety ? The Torah exists to save us from ourselves ,to protect us from falling into the abyss. If there is zero judaism in Israel ,what is the point of living here in a place where wages are ridiculously low ,where prices are high ,where there is constant threat of war and terror ?
