31. Why not US submarines too to Israel ?

32. @4 The subs run on hydrogen fuel cells = stealth ability
Neo ,   EU   (05.04.12)
And not diesel, they use diesel just for normal operations, but they can anytime change into stealth mode and that make them so effective. Big slow american and russian nuclear-powered subs can not locate them, while they make noise like a truck under water.

I don't know what your problem is, but I don't have that much time to put my 2 Cents in. First of all, it is ironic that Germany, the nemesis of the Jews in the last century, is contributing to the defense and well being of the Jewish State. But, I see that as a good thing. As for "trust in the Lord": Yaakov aveenu trusted in G-d; yet when he faced Eisav, one of the three actions he took to prepare to meet his brother (an avowed enemy) was to prepare his family for battle with Eisav. Even though we trust in Hashem, we must be prepared to encounter our enemies with Earthly tangible means of defense! This is not Facism...it is survivalism.

Do you really think the Chinese care AT ALL about the Palestinians?
37. # 17, # 25, # 36
Kobi Martin ,   Tel Aviv   (05.04.12)
# 17. Most of them want. They changed. The EU has put millions of dollars there to build institutions. It is a new reality. They have Hamas, right, but we also have are freaks here. Why dont try to have a Palestinian neighbour? If they dont behave, they will learn as a proper nation and the world will grant us the right of defense. # 25 China is already the second Superpower, dude. Wake up. # 36 They must not care about the Palestinians, but they will care for the Middle East. And the Palestinian issue today is used by all bad guys to pressure us. It is a game and the Chinese will soon get that.
38. #27 - There is no evidence outside the Bible
Henry from New York ,   USA   (05.04.12)
for him humiliating any Pharaoh of Egypt. He did not save us from annihilation at the hand of Nazi Germany either. Maybe he wants us to look to our own defences?
39. Except that the MAD doctrine does not work with Iran
Mladen Andrijasevic ,   Beer Sheva   (05.04.12)
The submarines may have a purpose as a second strike capability against all countries except Iran . The mutually assured destruction doctrine is ineffective with Iran. See MAD is Dead www.madisdead.blogspot.com

How boring, after all this money its not even a yellow submarine or pink link in operation petticoat. I guess government and military folks are too square with no sense of humor!

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.04.12)
Co-existence? How is it possible to co-exist with violent thugs bent on your destruction? The Arabs have started six wars; they've lost them all. They've engaged in over seven decades of unrelenting terror attacks visited upon the Jewish people, both in Israel and in the Diaspora. How do you possible hope to achieve peace with such jackals and hyenas? Besides -- don't forget Israel is a nuclear power. Should we grow sufficiently tired of dealing with Arab nonsense and Arab terror and Arab violence on a daily basis, I assure you that we know how to put an end to it -- forever.

You really need to learn to stay out of my wheelhouse. The attack, which took place in October of 2002, was the work of Al Qaeda -- they publicly took credit for it. Why do you persist in making such a complete ass of yourself?
43. Way ovrblown
Alan ,   USA   (05.04.12)
A handful of small submarines with limited capabilities, limited range, and limited ability to stay underwater does not make Israel a major maritime power. These subs can cruise for just a few weeks before the need for refueling an replenishment, which makes long range missions difficult.
44. To: No. 43
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.05.12)
You're looking at things from an American perspective. Whereas the United States patrols the world with its submarine fleet, Israel's area of interest is much smaller -- we don't really care what happens in the South Pacific or the North Sea or the South Atlantic. Israel's bailiwick is the Middle East, and its submarine fleet -- which is far more sophisticated than you appear to realize -- is more than up to the task. We're not looking to send submarines to Murmansk. We're not looking to send submarines off the coast of Korea. We have what we need to meet the requirements of Israel's focus. And qualifying as a maritime power has nothing to do with quantity. The Soviet Union at one time had the largest naval fleet, merchant fleet and submarine fleet in the world. Look what happened to them, anyway. The definition of a maritime power is that country which maintains absolute control over its area of focus and interest. That would be Israel.

russian and chinese "toys" are pieces of junk. look at iran's airforce and its civil airlines to understand that and look how many russian planes blew up in the air and crashed. israel has the most superior military in the mid east without any refutation. it has the best air force in the world, better than russian and american air forces. it is a well known and proven fact. and lastly, it is not how many toys one has, but the quality of the toys and MAINLY THE BRAINS THAT SIT AND WORK THESE TOYS THAT COUNTS. jews and israelis have superior brains to all their enemies combined. and that os a hard pill for you to swallow.

we are doing and never did nothing to our neighbors. remember, all the wars from 1948 were brought onto israel by the arab nations. israel never started a war. all wars were arab wars against israel, the arabs were the first aggressors. remember that. arab terrorism existed even before the birth of israel and way way prior to the 1967 "occupation".

Do not put your trust in arms but in God. That's how David slew Goliath. He spoke to God and placed his faith in him before he struck. Besides, these submarines do not look that impressive to me. They are really very small compared to what I have seen of the U.S.A. Navy. Then again, what do I know about subs... Are they really good? Not according to Allen @#4.
52. Is this an article or is it an op-ed piece?

begs support from all the condemning world countries. When will the world make Israel relinquish its nuke? after 2, 3, 4 or 10 years!

Israel hopes that military force is not the answer in the long term. It knows it is the answer in the short term. For long term solutions, you have to totally change the beliefs and thinking of the arabs. You are fooling yourself if you think differently.

The comparison should not be made to the navies of the major powers, but to the navies in the immediate region, the topographical constraints, and to the needs of Israel. The submarines in question are all “diesel” in that actual nuclear submarines are much larger; too large for the coastal waters of the Mediterranean. The difference of the newer Dolphins is that they will be able to stay under water longer. The new system, from what I have read, will generate electricity which in turn drives the electric motors for propulsion and/or recharges the boat's batteries without it having to surface. Its range will be increase, but it seems the diesel motors will still be used.
57. Alan #43 you might want to learn something
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (05.05.12)
The US has very capable submarines. They do not deploy very many into the Med for several reasons. First there is a lack of need for them there and the US has a VERY limited number of subs. Second the US boats are far too large and noisy for the region. That capability that the US subs have means they have to be large, and large and nuclear = noisy. Our submarines in the Med makes us one of the largest undersea forces in the Med - larger than the US. They are very capable submarines and they are much less noisy than nuclear boats. Your ignorance shows that you have no idea what the US has or doesn't have.
58. Egyptian, you have nothing to fear
Mark ,   USA   (05.05.12)
If Egypt's intentions are peaceful there is nothing to fear from Israel's supposed nukes. Have they used them? Had the arabs had nukes they would've used them a long time ago. Go...enjoy your "Springtime!"
59. #57 gee (et al) - thanks
solomon ,   bklyn   (05.05.12)
I stand corrected in that I thought diesel motors are noisier than nuclear. You are correct; diesel-electric submarines have a stealth advantage over their nuclear counterparts. Nuclear submarines generate noise from coolant pumps and turbo-machinery needed to operate the reactor, even at low power levels. Some nuclear submarines can operate with their reactor coolant pumps secured, making them quieter than electric subs. A conventional submarine operating on batteries is almost completely silent, the only noise coming from the shaft bearings, propeller, and flow noise around the hull. Toward the end of the 20th century, some submarines, such as the British Vanguard class, began to be fitted with pump-jet propulsors instead of propellers. Although these are heavier, more expensive, and less efficient than a propeller, they are significantly quieter, giving an important tactical advantage. (info from wiki)
60. 2 States solution
Abraham Paz ,   Los Angeles. USA   (05.05.12)
Everybody knowsthe necessity of a Palestinian State. The problem is that, arabs dont accept to talk, without conditions. I think that the reason is that their leaders are afraid of the facy they must lead a state instead of a terrorist organization
