61. #6 Sean, many Israelis have been to
Meghan ,   Israel   (05.11.12)
Ireland and had such a great time, they can only say good things about your beautiful friendly country. Israel has many Irish pubs that do great trade and they have learnt to drink Guinness! Most of us do understand that this group is a small minority of ejits, we have them to, as does most of europe. Sadly too many on all sides, do believe everything written in the media, also the great propaganda machine that Isreal seems to lack. Slainte!
62. Journalistic "Facts"
TS ,   Ireland   (05.11.12)
Kevin Myers is renowned for his inaccuracy and shit stirring in the Irish media, including blatant anti-semitism and support for holocaust denial, who has recently switched colours as he is now a fanatical anti-Muslim. If you want the actual fact of the Israeli cultural boycott campaign, check out the website for the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign at www.ipsc.ie. This is actually what both Myers and Alan Shatter refer to as the "Ireland Palestine Solidarity Group", another example of there inaccuracy.
63. Sorry, but the author is incorrect about Sharia
Logic ,   Israel   (05.11.12)
Thanks for the supportive article, but the author is incorrect about the status of Sharia law here. Israel allows Sharia courts for Israeli Muslims and the courts are funded by the State. This is based on the legal system from the pre-State era: http://freethoughtblogs.com/dispatches/2012/05/08/israel-has-sharia-law/
64. That's an excellent article!
Abigail ,   New York   (05.11.12)
65. People of Israel
Brian ,   Ireland   (05.11.12)
PLEASE DO NOT THINK ALL OF IRELAND IS LIKE THIS!!! These protests, boycotts, aggression is just from a very very small minority (who happen to be extremely vocal) The rest of Ireland think they are complete fools. We have much love and respect for Israel and appreciate our culture is popular over there too.
66. Leftist Liberals and Progressives - The Red Neo-Fascism?
Con ,   Sweden   (05.11.12)
Ireland or Irish culture is not the issue here. And needless to say I do not find Irish people to be in any way like the article describes it. I find the article somewhat prejudiced and also not to the point In fact, if we look at it from a religious and cultural perspective, I would find that Protestants, historically and generally mind you all, have been far more aggressive in their anti-Jewishness (just as they traditionally are very Anti-Catholic and generally more intolerant of "non-purists", "idolatry" "non-orthodox" and "pagans"). Compare this with the witch hunts. So, without pointing finger at any Protestant, Atheist or Catholic in Ireland today, I would conclude that theologically and historically it is within the Anglo-Protestant church that we can identify these tendencies, such as the Puritans and Calvinists of the 16th and 17th century. Those were not Irish-Catholic. The catholic anti-Semitism has quite a different history to tell. Just look at all the white power groups in Europe and America. They are, self-proclaimed though, "Protestant". Needless to say they are not what a Protestant church or Protestants would generally recognize as Christians, and it is important to stress that they are not Christians in that sense. But the point being they do not identify with or gets inspiration from Catholicism. On the contrary - they despise them in the same regard as they do of Jews and other Ethno-religious minorities, such as Irish-Catholics. Conclusively I think we need to move away from addressing the issue in terms of Irish-Catholic or Anglo-Protestant or just "Anglo"-culture in regard to the Anti-Semitism and bigotry of the 21st century. Rather, leftist liberals and progressives are the problem here. The most extreme of these can be labeled as Red Neo-Fascists. And they are all over Europe and America. They are mainly Atheist - but still argue with a metaphysical and diabolical rhetoric, even more so than the religious right in that sense. All is black and white. The Class or The People are enshrouded in a mystical divinity and they are always on the good side thus Israel is "evil". Communism, Socialism, Nazism/Hiterlism, Fascism. All are in some sense leftist and violently Atheist movements. This phenomenon is not isolated to or aggravated in Ireland.
67. This is blown way out of proportion by Myers
jj   (05.11.12)
Theyre a fringe group of crackpots that nobody really takes seriously in ireland. they are regarded as extremists and though they do have a following, these people are in the vast minority. The rest of Irish people care very very little about Israel beyond a muttering of "ah, isnt it terrible what happens over there", with most people not actually even having an opinion, or caring which side is "right". Seriously guys - you all have a massive hangup and megalomaniac delusion that the entire world is fixated with what goes on in your country. your media leads you to believe this (not eased in the slightest by Myers' latest grab for attention). on another note; I know for a fact that Muslims in Ireland are treated with quite a bit of disdain. This idea of Ireland being an outpost of "Eurabia" is bloody nonsense.
68. #62 LOL! You must be freaking JOKING!
(05.11.12)
The very fact that you're posting your poison in a Jewish forum makes you unreliable. I bet there are many anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli forums where you spew your venom, so why don't you carry your racism ONLY there, instead of insulting our intelligence and knowledge with your pathetic attempts at disinformation. Get your arse out of our HOME creep and eat s-it where your despiseful kind dwells more successfully: in the Islamo-Leftist hellholes you surely frequent.
69. Dear Sean
To Sean from Ireland   (05.11.12)
Hi Sean, First of all, thanks for the reply... I guess now you know how most Israelis feel when we see how Israel is portrayed by the world media... it shows us as murderers, bigots, racists etc. When anyone who has any sense knows that this is simply not true. So, I'd like to welcome you to our club :)
70. Bravo, Kevin!
Paolo ,   Milano, Italia   (05.11.12)
Finally a resonable voice from the Irish Island. Why are they hostile to Israel? Jealousy? Ignorance? Anti-Semitism? Arab money? All together?
71. The best article ever
Doron ,   London   (05.11.12)
Kevin Meyers is one of the most courages journalist in all the British islands. I wish we had a journalist of that caliber in London. Irish people think very highly about themselves but without any justification. Those who prefer radical islamists on western democrats in the only Jewish state in the world must be out of their minds.
72. #61 Agree, except...
Kevin P ,   --   (05.11.12)
...for the part about Israel not having an excellent propaganda machine. It probably has the best one in the world. If it didn't, then Israel would currently be facing world-wide sanctions. This article is the latest in a string of Ynet articles that seek to keep the victim narrative alive and kicking. Hate can be found in all countries, but it must always be balanced by the views of the majority. Arab nations could quite easily cherry-pick various Israeli politicians/rabbis/media outlets that are racist and bigoted and try to say that they represent the majority of Israelis. Would this be fair? Of course not. We must always be on guard against sh*t stirring articles that seek to do nothing but divide people.
73. The Emerald Isle
Steve from Raleigh   (05.11.12)
adopted a 'neutrality' in WW2 that allowed them to permit Nazi U-Boats to dock there.
74. #23 the other way around
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (05.11.12)
The Jews had their land Israel. The British empire came in 1920 and started the massive import of Arabs to take over Israel to prevent Jewish independence. When the Arabs attacked the defenseless Jews, the British turned a blind eye or helped the Arabs by forcing the Jews from their homes "for their own safety". The European Jews could have fled the Nazis to Israel, but the British prevented that. Without the British, there would have been no Shoah. When Jews attacked British military targets in self-defense, the British called them terrorists and murdered them. In 1948, when they left, the British gave arms and forts to the Arabs. The Irish experience is similar to the Jews: a small people almost destroyed by the brutal, greedy, imperialist British.
75. It's your conduct, stupid ,...
split ,   US   (05.11.12)
You can beat this half a dead horse called victimhood only for so long demanding to pull your overloaded pity wagon - Nations are waking up, face it ,...
76. no. 73
jj   (05.11.12)
and that is a complete lie. but id say its one youre happy to believe.
77. This Makes Me So Sad
Mychal ,   TN, USA   (05.11.12)
I am deeply disturbed by the news of antisemitism and anti-Israeli sentiment coming out of Ireland. I lived in Ireland for a time, and I have always wanted to go back. I consider it my home, and have always thought if I had the money, I'd at least have a vacation home there, if not live there permanently. Retiring there was also an option. But since beginning my conversion to Judaism, I wonder if I will ever be able to go home. Will I be welcome? Will I be safe as a Jew?
78. Many Irish do not get it
Mir ,   IRL   (05.11.12)
they seem to be bonding btw. their own "under-dog" image and the palestinian situation (british supression/Israeli supression), without any background knowledge, any historical interest or political realities. celebrating new big chinese capital and slaming israel. never seen anybody demonstrating infront of the chinese embassy for human rights, except a few buddhists for tibet (not irish for sure)
79. anti-semitism in Eire
Pol Mac ,   Beal Feirste (Belfas   (05.11.12)
I cant believe so many inteligent people are listening to this discredited moron Kevin Myers! Ireland is far from anti Israeli and this 'Catholic' minset so many of the more unintelligent posters are talking about is a myth.We have eyes and ears and can research who are the murderers and cowards in the middle east
80. Ireland should listen to Kevin Myers!
Adam ,   Miami, Florida   (05.11.12)
81. #27
Amichai ,   Huntsville, US   (05.11.12)
Sure Chas, coming from a leftist in Los Angeles - big surprise. I'm willing to bet you've never even been to Israel. Ever talk to an Israeli Arab who actually lived in Israel? How about a Bedouin? How about asking either if they'd rather live under Islamic rule? Propagandists like you are a dime a dozen. The only real fascism is exercised by the leftists.
82. YOU PRETEND TO BE ANGEL OF LIGHT BUT YOU ARE DARK ANTICHRI$T
me   (05.11.12)
83. Split # 75
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (05.11.12)
You should save that speech for the ersatz Palestinians. It fits them perfectly.
84. #38. Fartle
Phil ,   Ireland   (05.11.12)
Seeing that I'm ardently pro-Israel, it makes me less of a dunce than you think.
85. #62 TS. Inaccuracy?
Phil ,   Ireland   (05.11.12)
There are NO facts on the IPSC website. All it has is the most biased, ill-informed lies that you could possibly read about Israel. Having personally encountered the vile tactics used by said campaign, I can vouch that it is about hatred of Jews, pure and simple. If you want to tackle inaccuracies, then start with those guys and see their reactions. Of course you are probably one of them so that won't help.
86. ire land is the land with more ire for everyone who is not
Moshe ,   Usa   (05.11.12)
ire ish. Oh, G-d . . . I'm so much more creative without any ire for ire land. Where is it anyways ?
87. Irish Eyes are not smiling,in fact they never smile
Irisheyesarenotsmili ,   Dublin Ireland   (05.12.12)
Ever wondered why there are so many jokes about dumb Irish men and women. It's because they are Irish. The worlds greatest shit stirrers.........
88. Irish...to #6 Sean
Tania ,   Colombia   (05.12.12)
I sure hope you are right, Sean. However in reading articles in the Jpost, Ynet and others, I come across too many anti Israel and even antisemitic comments from Irish people. Are they the "active" minority that make more noise than their numbers would suggest? I sure hope so.
89. Ynet is fabricating again
David ,   USA   (05.12.12)
As many Irish lads have said in here this is only a small and very vocal minority of people that dislike Jews. Countries where the majority of people seem to dislike Jews tends to be Hungary, Poland and Spain from what I read. Irish maybe a tad loud but they are good peoples.
90. Where is the Irish prime minister?
Lili ,   Haifa   (05.12.12)
How come he has not said anything out load about the constant incitement against us? Are they blind out there in Dublin? I intended to go with some friends on vacation this summer in the emerald isle now I'm not so sure anymore. Should I start a campaign against Irish products and culture so the Irish government would understand how wrong it is? I will not do it but still it is very annoying this silence by the Irish authorities..
