Equally valuable, but not equal, therefore you treat people with godly wisdom and discernment, what Chrstians call a gift of wisdom or knowledge, as Yeshuas disciple St Luke was a rabbinic Doctor he understood the effects of evil, or negative attitude, root causes, soul wounds etc, etc. Medicine is a high calling and it is good there is someone higher to call on The Name of Yehovah Rophe! Sometimes repentance from sin, confession and anointing with oil brings instant healing. Alleluia, His Name Is Wonderful, Emanuel, God with us.

and then you can distort them[M.Twain] The Rabbi looked for a Halahic way to treat the foreigner on Shabat. The meaning of foreigner here,i think is an enemy of Israel, since it is written in the Tora that strangers must be treated the same way as Jews.Because Jews were themselves strangers in Egypt..

Rabbi Yosef is explaining a well known Rabbinic loophole that allows a doctor to violate the Sabbath for a non-Jew. Orthodox Judaism practices the interpretation of Halacha given by our Rabbinic leaders who time and time again have used such loopholes to help us maintain our ethical / moral outlook.

All Halachists agree that in practice every Jewish doctor must deal with any emergency if there is no Gentile doctor on the scene on Shabbos. Rabbi Yosef is merely explaining how this works Halachically. The article is sensationalist/tabloid in its attitude to a routine technicality. Every observant Jewish medic understands the reasoning. Desecrating Shabbos is worse than desecrating Yom Kippur, so we need a technical way to balance our responsibilities. Some posters probably routinely desecrate Shabbos and don't understand where we are coming from.

and have great respect and sympathy for peace loving Non Jews. EVERY Non Jew can convert to Judaism if it is for spiritual and not for economical reasons. Neither in order to marry a Jew.We have seen to many times , partners of Jews becoming the worst antisemite after an ugly divorce. We believe that G-D has created the world and gave us a guide the Tora. The aim of the Tora is mainly to develop the humane qualities of men,and their love to the neighbour. The 21st century is with reason proud of her scientific progress. However without humane qualities ,science can become an arm of destruction. May Non Jews and Jews ,one day live in harmony and contribue to make of our common planet a better place to live. It was a pleasure to answer to your friendly post, and i hope that my view does satisfy you.
99. Treating Gentiles on Shabbat
D'vorah ,   Haifa, Israel   (05.20.12)
There is a principle in Judaism called "Pikuach Nefesh". The Sages taught that to "save a life" it is permissible to break the Shabbat. Saving a life and preventing the suffering of a person is a more "weighty" matter of the Torah than keeping the Shabbat (not doing melachot. If a person's life is in danger, whether the person is a Jew or a Gentile, they should be treated. If they are injured, bleeding, or terribly uncomfortable and in pain, my understanding is "Pituach Nefesh" would apply.

this "rabbi" is saying UNHUMAME things . It's "religion" ? well than this should be prohibited . In name of the same "religion" they spit on girls , disrespect others , hate Israel , burn the Israeli flag . All in the name of this "religion"

Sometimes legal technicalities take on a life of their own. Obama's birth certificate, for instance. If born outside the USA he is barred from being President. Jewish Law says that if posible a Gentile doctor should perform medical procedures on the Biblical Sabbath. If there is no Gentile doctor and the procedure cannot wait we have ways around, to balance Law with common sense. This is nothing new or amazing, just a legal technicality.
102. when you save one life it is as if you saved the entire worl
Shoshanna ,   Tel Aviv   (05.21.12)
The Talmud asks why the human race was created as a single human being, as opposed to creating many people at once (like the animals which were created en masse )? This teaches us that just as Adam was created in the beginning, and he was the entire human population of the world, likewise we need to look at each individual as if he/she were the entire population of the world. Therefore, when you save one life it is as if you saved the entire world. Talmud, Sanhedrin 37a states: "FOR THIS REASON WAS MAN CREATED ALONE, TO TEACH THEE THAT WHOSOEVER DESTROYS A SINGLE SOUL... SCRIPTURE IMPUTES [GUILT] TO HIM AS THOUGH HE HAD DESTROYED A COMPLETE WORLD; AND WHOSOEVER PRESERVES A SINGLE SOUL..., SCRIPTURE ASCRIBES [MERIT] TO HIM AS THOUGH HE HAD PRESERVED A COMPLETE WORLD." I thought Rabbi Ovadia was an educated man. He is a bigot. Plain and simple.

Dear Olim, could you please explain this to me? I do not believe in any God so it's bit difficult to understand.. Would you like to be discriminated and excluded by others? I respect all others and treat everybody the way I would like to be treated.. Why always We and the others? When we are born and when we die... we all are alone and babies do not distinguish between colors, races, beliefs, cultures etc. Hatred can never be overcome with hatred, only with love. How one can expect acceptance if he himself is not willing to accept?
104. most of you dont understand the rabbis words
joe barnathan ,   brooklyn ny usa   (05.22.12)
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's books on Jewish law all have a common theme. first the rabbi states the law as it was passed down for thousands of years, then he goes into detail how in certain situations that this law is not applicable.in one of his books yalkut yosef the rabbi states the law 'jews are not allowed to go swimming on shabbat"then the rabbi states the rabbinical prohibition was made because it may cause one to build a flotation device on sabbat but one can wade in the water without swimming then the rabbi continues that one is allowed to swim in a swimming pool as long as the pool has a wall around the edge. similar to this situation about doctors first the rabbi is stating a law that is thousands of years old. this is not his opinion. this is the law and we don't have the authority to change the law. then the rabbi presents a way to circumvent the law that is within the guidelines of the Jewish law his solution is as long as 2 doctors treat the patient then one has not directly violated the Sabbath. i have never seen a doctor operate on a patient without anyone else in the room . therefor the rabbi should be praised for finding a halachik solution for the thousands of religious Jewish doctors that thought they are violating the Sabbath every time the operate on non Jew
105. joe , you don't understand !

"To hold the scalpel together" is not having another person in the room . Try to use a scalpel with two different hands .

107. The Ayatollah needs a Rabbi
Taxpayer ,   Hod Hasharon   (05.22.12)
It is obvious that this ignorant Ayatollah does not have even the most basic understanding of Jewish Ethics - perhaps he should go to a real Rabbi - like a Reform Rabbi and learn a bit of Derech Eretz - Or as Rabbi Akiba put it do not do unto others that which you would not want them to do to you. I am sure that the majority of us would be quite amusedif the unlearned Ayatollah would find himself in a situation where he needed medical treatment on the Sabbath but was told that he could not get it because it because of his religion, whatever it is for it certainly is not Judaism, but I am sure he would not.

Fundamentalist leaders of any religion tend to make stupid and inhumane pronouncements. It's a pity they get attention for this nonsense.
109. No moral lectures from Orthodox
David ,   New York, USA   (05.24.12)
As long as social parasites are treated as moral authorities, Israel will have problems. The Orthodox: - Don't serve their country - Don't work - Live on welfare - Harass women and girls - Interfere with marriage and family life of other Jews They are the last people from whom israel should be getting moral advice
110. Ovadia Yosef is a baffun

We should send him to a desreted island, togheter with the Muslim clerics- they will get along there just fine!
111. Compassion
keren ,   usa   (10.24.12)
Ovadia misses the mark. Compassion for the injured and sick will always trump any set of rules he may argue. Should I hesitate to help Ovadia in dire need? AT ANY TIME? Or should I allow him to suffer and die. We all know the answer to that in our heart. Having compassion for the ill is proof of the true Torah. To allow injury and death is tantamount to murder, and there can be no moral argument otherwise, no matter where it is written.
