1. Shocking... we're becoming a racist country
Ariel ,   Petach Tikva, Israel   (05.29.12)
2. Give me a break!
Amichai ,   Huntsville, US   (05.29.12)
I can't believe this statement - "These are normative people who were not intoxicated and do not have a criminal record". Ok, they weren't intoxicated, they had no criminal records, but I WON'T believe they are "normative"! They just sound like a bunch of punks. Then the police released the 2 suspects under "restricting conditions"? It's much harder for me to believe that a hotel employee of 4 years picked a fight with 7 guys. I'm concerned about Israel's illegal immigration problem, but that doesn't mean that it's appropriate to have lynch mobs on the streets.
3. We already are a racist country
Jonatan ,   Haifa   (05.29.12)
4. #1 Becoming?
Robert ,   Australia   (05.29.12)
These 7 individuals could be the Israeli chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.
5. Ashamed
Naftali ,   Israel   (05.29.12)
I am ashamed that I belong to the same nation as people that would do this. Self defense ? 7 people beating on one guy how can that be self defense. All this guy was trying to do was his job. I do think that there is a problem with too many refugees in Israel but this is not a solution acting like this is a much bigger problem.
6. He said himself that it's hard to believe that it was racism
Michael ,   Toronto   (05.29.12)
It may well have been, but he expressed surprise indicating Israel is not a racist country: "I don’t know why they beat me, it can’t be just because I'm black."
7. way to go
daniel ,   helsinki   (05.29.12)
what a civilized and educated country. what a shame for israel. we all know it's looked at with a magnifying glass.
8. Racism
Zvi ,   Afula   (05.29.12)
To #2 like all the American Jews youare living in a virtual world where Israel is sooooo perfect that anything happened is somebody else fault. Why you would not come to live for few years in the country to experince the ugly social reality
9. Stop this sickness now ! To Ariel #1 :
Yossef   (05.29.12)
Of course we are a racist country, and we are racist people, between us and against everything not jewish. Face it. But I hope we can recover from this sickness. If we cannot, there is no hope and no future for the jewish people.
11. I dont buy it
Sane   (05.29.12)
I don't buy all this "we're becoming a racist country" all because of a few drunken louts in Eilat and a mob in S Tel aviv. Typical media hysteria.
12. The case
Sane ,   Manchester   (05.29.12)
Appears that these are violent thugs. Whether racist or not does not matter, their actions must be severly punished
13. Israel has become an extremely violent society.
daniel ,   israel   (05.29.12)
Israel has become an extremely violent society.
14. You have violent thugs everywhere
Rachel ,   US   (05.29.12)
25 people got shot in Chicago this past weekend. Are all Americans thugs? No. Arrest these punks and don't paint the whole nation on the actions of a few.
15. disposition of case
Wade ,   NYC USA   (05.29.12)
The test is how the case will play out. If the assailants are prosecuted, then the Israeli justice system is vindicated. It should not be necessary, but perhaps the hotels should post, "Any assault on a member of the hotel staff will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and is punishable by up to x years in prison."
16. Just back from Eilat.I do not believe in
Dyslexic...... ,   Israel....   (05.29.12)
violence against these poor people. But they have too go back too were they come from. They live on the beaches in the streets of Eilat. This situation is going to get worse. We are not racist we are realists.
17. Ariel @1, how did you arive to this conclusion.
leo ,   usa   (05.29.12)
18. Whatever
Nadine ,   L.A. USA   (05.29.12)
Yes, there are thugs everywhere but we dont let them loose like Israel does and make excuses for them. Yea. you heard me.
19. turning into a replay of the SA on Berlin streets
Cameron ,   USA   (05.29.12)
20. "Have to go back to where they came from"
David ,   San Francisco   (05.29.12)
That is the most hilarious, ironic and ignorant thing an Israeli Jew could ever say! Before Jews were saying this about the Sudanese the Palestinians were saying it about the Jewish IMMIGRANTS to Palestine.
21. #18 Nadine Who is Making Excuses for Thugs?
(05.29.12)
Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder. You want to decide what happened with this MUSLIM man who has been working for 4 yrs without incident. Why don't you invite all these poor Muslims into LA and you can live under sharia. Until you take at least 10 into your house, STFU!!!
22. Customer Service
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (05.29.12)
Customer service in Israel is definitely improving and I doubt the staff member deserved such treatment, but more details are needed on the case. There is an old saying that goes..."You can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people who are "lower" than them on the social scale". i.e. Many people are very good at schmoozing and charming another person who they can a material, sexual or physical favour from whilst customer service people on a bus, at the shop or elsewhere may be looked down upon. Conversely to this, in wealthy nations or where the economy is going gangbusters finding people to do relatively menial tasks can be difficult.
23. Nadine # 18
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (05.29.12)
And just what do you think parole here in the United States is? It's letting thugs loose on our streets. Lawyers make excuses for them all the time "he had a poor childhood etc. on and on. " Yeah, I heard you Nadine but you aren't making any sense.
24. "Surprising" facts yet to be revealed, stay tuned .
deavman ,   Acco, Israel   (05.29.12)
25. Correction...
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (05.29.12)
"can get a material..."
26. what is the duty of the unhcr
pharous ,   asmara.eritrea   (05.29.12)
For all of the violence the unhcr and isreal gov. Are responsible
27. Really?
Nadine ,   L.A.   (05.29.12)
First off, what does this worker being Muslim have anything to do with him being assaulted by punks? And why would I take Muslims into my house? Your points have absolutely nothing to do with my argument. I don't care if he is muslim or not he is a human being that was simply doing his job. Are you really defending a group of thugs? And to the other person who spoke of parole. Well, I hate to inform you but parole means you were convicted and incarcerated; not let go like these vicious thugs that assaulted this huMAN (yea, not Muslim, not Christian, not Jewish, not Buddhist, etc) simply human. So you STFU.
28. Nadine # 27
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (05.30.12)
I'm not defending these thugs and I'm not defending the way this has been handled. So far this poor Sudanese man has not recieved justice. What I'm saying is that Israel doesn't have the market cornered on injustice as your post at # 18 implied. We realease thugs onto the street here every day and make excuses for them too. You didn't give a time line in your post and you haven't told me anything I don't already know.
29. Do not mean to be harsh
Nadine ,   L.A. USA   (05.30.12)
I just hate to see people victimized and bully mentaiity. I doubt if this worker was a rapist but just a low level worker in a hotel trying to get buy like everyone else in the world so why should he be punished for the deeds of others. I dont like bully mentality. It is too sad :(

zionist forever   (05.30.12)
The UNHCR is not involved in this at all because these people entered Israel illegally themselves and were not placed there under the requests of the UNHCR. They have not been granted asylum because they did no request it on arrival they just entered the country and went off and got on with life illegally in Israel so there is no UNHCR role here. The government is not responsible for this the individuals who did it are. The vast majority of Israelis want them out and the government supports that but there are a few who take things to far. If somebody robs you or rapes a woman you don't say its the government to blame you say its the individual who decided to commit the crime who is responsible. The only solution is deportation and detention until they can be deported
