1. totally agree
yaacovic ,   Australia   (06.04.12)
How can a peace even be contemplated with an entity that not only willingly, but eagerly, embraces murderers. They are effectively declaring that it is legitimate to adopt murder as a national policy. There should be no equivocation here. It is black and white.
2. talmud: kind to cruel
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (06.04.12)
The Talmud tells us that when some one is kind to the cruel he will end up being cruel to the kind. So our government is trying to buy favor in the eyes of the world and the Arabs by being cruel to the Jewish settlers and citizens alike.
3. WHY? Because many hope to make a lot of MONEY from the deal
Accounting 101 ,   Israel   (06.04.12)
It's really very very simple once you understand peoples real motives. Remember Bibi's idea: "Economic Piece" They get land, Israel gets to write contracts and do business with Arabs like never before. Pure, simple GREED. And actually many of these prospective agreements have already been made. Ask Shimon Peres.
4. peace is not realistic
Gabor ,   Budapest, Hungary   (06.04.12)
Excellent article, though I would add a few things. Do you make gestures to your enemy? Yes but ONLY if you get something in return. Like peace from Sadat or Hussein of Jordan. And what did we get from removing the 8000 jews from Gaza? What did we get from Arafat by granting him an authority? In the '90-s we believed that we are on the path to achieving peace. Then came the 2nd intifada. And then? I remember when Arafat died and Abu Mazen was elected, the Israeli headlines were quoting him saying 'end to all violence'. I was overwhelmed. I truly believed that finally there will be peace. Nearly a decade has passed since then and we are completely off the track. There are currently 2 Palestinian leaderships and the only difference between them is that the one in Judea and Samaria is talking about peace in English and war in Arabic, while the other one does not say anything in English, just war in Arabic. The Israeli leadership should finally realize that currently peace with the Arabs living in Gaza, Judea and Samaria is just not realistic. It is out of question.
5. a story
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (06.04.12)
A life boat with two survivors in the ocean. Mr Right starts rowing with an oar knowing this is their only choice. Mr Left, overcome by sun stroke and depression, is insane. Sometimes he makes holes in the bottom of the boat, sometimes he throws their fresh water overboard. He is often offended that Mr Right is sweaty, did not shave or isn't wearing a tie, so he hits Mr Right in the head with an oar or tries to push him overboard. When Mr Right explains that if the Mr Left helped row, they could follow the north star to safety, Mr Left says with the certainty only the insane possess that when Mr Right dies, the sharks will push the boat to a safe harbor.
6. Was the Prime Minister thinking?
michael Pielet ,   israel   (06.04.12)
What was Bibi thinking? Bibi was not thinking. Remember Jews are stupid. You do not make peace with your enemies.
7. what a strong article
tiki ,   belgium   (06.04.12)
and a charge against the pipedreams of many, without one word misrepresenting the truth. Bravo!
8. Fascistic rantings...
Rafi ,   US   (06.04.12)
The difference between Germany and the Arab states is the REALITY that Israel is located in the Middle East not Europe. Whether Israel likes it or not, its neighbors are Arab states & the Palestinians... Therefore, if there is a small, cost-free gesture that can improve NEIGHBORLY relations even marginally - why not take it? I am not suggesting "turning the other cheek" - rather improve situation if & when possible. One nevers knows when it might payoff - even marginally. Meanwhile Haetzni's bitter formula offers nothing... except endless hatred, retribution & bloodshed... Assad & co,. would feel right at home.
9. Those dead terrorists are not coming back to bomb Israel
Sam ,   Canada   (06.04.12)
Not everyone wants to spend their whole life at war. So, if there is a chance to reach out to the enemy without affecting one's own security that's not a catastrophe. One has to evaluate what gestures are worthwhile and don't naively help the enemy.
10. Because it is getting to the point
Sarah B   (06.04.12)
Where Israel either goes for the two state solution and worldwide recognition, or it ceases to exist. Particularly when/if Iran achieves parity with Israel pertaining to nuclear weapons. And Iran would never have to use them. Ben Gurion would be so busy with those second passport holders getting out of the way that economically Israel will have no hope of maintaining current levels of the military. And that is without factoring in the decline of the United States, and despite Lieberman's best attempt a two finger solute by Russia and China
11. It's For Good Old U.S. $ - Until
Neil ,   Raanana   (06.04.12)
Until our government realizes that all our blessings come only from Hashem and from nowhere else, they will continue to make obscene gestures like these.
12. Why?...Here's the answer..
Avi ,   NYC, US   (06.04.12)
Because when an Israeli soldier dies in enemy territory we would also like to get his remains back.
13. because of stupid naive leftist thinking. get rid of barak
ralph   (06.04.12)
14. There is no historic parallel for Israel's insane gestures.
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.04.12)
The author is 100% correct. Moreover, there is no historic parallel for Israel's insane gestures. Never before, in all of human history, has a nation begged and pleaded with enemies, it has defeated, for a "peace" treaty. It is always the loser who is forced to accept the winner's terms. Except for the loonies who govern Israel. Never before, in all of human history, has a nation offered concessions to defeated enemies for a "peace" treaty. Except for Israel. Israeli concession and gestures are are pure insanity.
15. #10 The phoney Sarah B impostor- please get a
hippocrates ,   earth   (06.04.12)
LIFE. Sad really
16. This article is complete garbage
Mr. Reasonable ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (06.04.12)
and the analogy at the beginning is ludicrous. this author should be banned
17. A good question.....
Shalom ,   U.S.A.   (06.04.12)
without an answer because there is no way to explain this kind of action. There is a solution, however, remove this these people from power!
18. Every word is gold.
aVI   (06.04.12)
And that is a good proposition. Burn the remains of any dead terrorist and scatter the ashes at sea..
19. Back in Body Bags
Joe ,   London, UK   (06.04.12)
Am I missing the point somewhere? Obviously I am. Why must we hang on to dead bodies in our Holy Land? The arabs dont respect the living, all the more so, the dead. The way they honoured their dead when they were returned was only to 'stick up the finger' at us and because we are making a fuss about it. They could not care less...but it's just a way to show us " look....we won..."whcich of course they have not. It's just the 'menslech' thing to. Why? Because we are meshen!
20. Yes, why take the moral high road?
ZionistBecky ,   Israel   (06.04.12)
We should act exactly like the third-world authoratarian dictatorships that surround us. But we should also tell those in the 'west' that Israel is morally superior to these dictatorships. I don't think many will buy this argument (except for the silly American Christian fundies) but it's worth a shot. I also suggest we elect Ben Jabo, Chaim, israel israeli and devorah as our spokespeople. These four individuals are fine examples of the best of Israel.
21. Insanity
Michael ,   Haifa   (06.04.12)
It calls for somebody as insane as Haetzny to recognize insanity in others without having the professional qualifications to do so.
22. Great article!
Rickey ,   NY, NY   (06.04.12)
One of the best I've read in a long, long, time! My feelings exactly!
23. Because our leaders are insane
Zev ,   Israel   (06.04.12)
and suffer from some unknown complex that should be studied by psychiatrists. No wonder Israel is told what to do and stepped on by the world.
24. Because
Sean ,   Israel   (06.04.12)
The simplest of Reasons! It's to show To The world that we arent what the terrorists are, we Are Humane , our army Isn't out there to Murder civilians an our country is anything but an apartheid state, unfortunately Many don't agree, and we have to do Many many gestures like these to Remind them
25. Bibi must have had his reasons for doing something so stupid
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (06.04.12)
Hussein Obama must be rubbing off on him.
26. I don't want to be like them
Dwolf ,   San jose ca   (06.04.12)
I am not delusional. While I agree with everything the writer says, we answer to a higher authority.
27. The post at No. 10 is not mine.
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.04.12)
28. Obama wrong to grant Bin Laden Muslim rites but ...
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (06.04.12)
... the decision to dump his body in the sea was the right call. It was not "honored" by his family and supporters, nor will any be making pilgrimage to his burial site. Israel should have taken note. Israel's "gestures" to her enemies are strictly one-way; there is never any reciprocation. All we're doing is "confirming" the enemy's belief in the righteousness of their cause.
29. Idiotic
Sam ,   Boston   (06.04.12)
Idiotic comparison between Eichmann, one of the most evil people in the world - ever, and some Arab terrorists. No equivalency at all. That alone dooms this article to failure.
30. High moral ground is something for kindergarden not war-
tom ,   tel aviv   (06.04.12)
fare! If this was a "worthless" gesture to our enemy, we wouldn't have made it: rather simple, not?! Perception is everything: " it's not what you are, it's how you enter the room" and we enter like shmucks!
