Provided he doesn't decide to take it on himself to put palestinian elections on hold again ( they are already nearly 3 years overdue ) then they will probably take place in around 6 months and Abbas has said he won't be standing again at the next election. Abbas also knows that in such a short time that even if we start talking today we won't reach an agreement within that sort of timescale so Abbas will open negotiations and somebody else will get all the credit. Abbas wants his legacy so rather then open negotiations he won't be around to complete go for other victories like membership of UN bodies and blame lack of negotiations on Bibi and Obama for supporting Israel. When the arab spring reaches Jordan and Abdulah is toppled by the palestinian majority who make up 80% of the population it will probably be a game changer.
