2. Another fictional statehood declaration. Here we go again...
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.08.12)
In fictional Palestine, life is like a merry go round. Every few years they make another fictional statehood declaration. It falls flatter than pancake. Meanwhile, Judea and Samaria grow bigger, richer and stronger. Another fictional Palestine statehood declaration seems imminent. Here we go again...

6. Palestinians & Statehood
ltrail ,   United States   (06.08.12)
The palestinian people have been stripped of citizenship in every nation that they tried to usurp. Jordan was the most recent to do so. Now, these palestinians want to steal a portion of the miniscule nation of the State of Israel. The palestinians are not a unique people and if DNA were taken from them, their likely family ties would be Syria or Jordan ancestry. Statehood and Observer status in the UN are two things that they should never receive.

8. Abbas will probably win this round
zionist forever   (06.08.12)
The US, Canada, Germany probably France and some Eastern European and third world countries in Africa who rely on American money will vote against but unfortunately the vast majority will support the Palestinian bid and the US has no veto on this one. The only thing the US can do is say they will withdraw funding from any UN body that allows the palestinians to sit in or vote on scare them. UNESCO since admitting the Palestinians has lost around 10% of its funding and has been forced to cancel a whole load of planned projects now the US needs to scare others into voting against and make them understand it is damaging to the peace process if the arabs are allowed to have everything handed to them on a plate without the need for negotiation. This is the begining of a slippery slope if they are granted observer status at the UN because next stop will be to go to the General Assembly where the US has no veto and demand an actual state which they will almost certainly get the support for and once they get that next stop is the Security Council.
9. abbas and reality
real vision ,   ua   (06.08.12)
Abbas doesn't have a clue. His fatah and hamas hate each other almost as much as they hate the jews. Hamas charter calls for the destruction of Israel. Does he really think that Israel will sign a peace treaty when 1/2 the palestinians won't agree to peace and does Abbas really have ANY power over any of the violent palestinian and islamic groups whose stated goal is never to accept Israel. Funny how the world buys his BS
10. Go ahead, stupid!
Mara ,   Vienna   (06.08.12)
You wont win! Not even the leftists Hollande did go that far as to give you his vote! Europe has got a big mouth, but if it comes to recognize a terrorist entity, they will stop short, believe me. I know my continent!
11. Perhaps it is time ...
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.08.12)
... for Israel to withdraw from the United Nations. Then it really wouldn't matter what the ersatz "Palestinians" may or may not do -- from the date of its withdrawal, Israel will not be bound by any United Nations declarations, votes, or demands.
12. Look at the full demand, though
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.08.12)
Abbas -- who unilaterally ended talks -- is issuing demands: (i) he wants a massive prisoner release; (ii) he wants to import weapons (supposedly for police use); and (iii) he wants a freeze on settlement construction. Israel's answer to all is no, no and no. So Abbas has nothing new to say; he is still the one responsible for all the delays, and the refusals. He is the intransigent one; not Israel. He is engaged in an internal power struggle in the West Bank and has absolutely no interest in making any accommodations. Of course, Israel negotiates from a position of strength, and if Abbas really doesn't peace (he doesn't), then Israel will make some unilateral steps which will not be particularly well received in the international community, but that doesn't matter.
13. #8. Abbas may "win" another empty declaration.
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.08.12)
#8. Abbas may "win" another declaration. But there will never be a hostile terrorist state in the heart of Israel. The U.N. can be counted on to support the terrorist P.A., as they always have in the past. But it will get the P.A. nowhere; also as it always has. The overwhelming majority of Israelis simply won't allow it. Underneath the bravado, this is an empty and futile gesture on Abbas' part.
14. They already have a state - Jordan
Scott ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (06.08.12)
The notion of a "palestinian" people - which is English translation of "Philistine" is ridiculous. The Philistines were around thousands of years before there were Muslims or the Arabic language. Most of the Arabs that call themselves palestinians came from Syria or Egypt, as Arafat did. Britian's division of the Palestine Mandate & the creation of a new Arab state - Jordan was completely illegal. The Hashemite tribe which rules Jordan, named for the bordering Jordan River, came from Arabia. They only makeup 20% of the population. If there were democracy there, the Arabs that call themselves "palestinians" would rule the country.

James ,   San Francisco   (06.08.12)
Palestinians were stripped of Kuwaiti citizenship, but most Palestinian refugees in Jordan do have citizenship. Same with Palestinians in Iraq, Syria, and a few other nations. Syrians, Jordanians and Palestinians are a mixed people who were Arabized during the conquest of the Levant and North Africa. Palestinian DNA has a stronger Jewish connection than it does with its neighbors. The only TRUE genetic Arabs come from the Gulf, most notably Yemen. Few Palestinians have ties to Yemen, but some do in Ramallah, which was settled by Yemenite Christians in the 1500's. I am pro Israel, but the Palestinians are not "stealing" land. You can not steal something that is yours or you legally own. Israel IS turning the Palestinian areas into an apartheid region. This will lead to Israel's demise if these actions do not cease, as the Palestinians aren't keen on leaving their homes anymore.

One can try to wear a disguise to pretend to be peaceful, but like a leopard which cannot remove its spots; not even with bleach, the so-called palestinians are still the same old terrorists, with ultimate goal to destroy the Jewish people of Israel. In the interim, they want to steal a chunk of Israel (Judea and Samaria).
17. Only serious long-term solution is one democratic state
christianpalestinian ,   las vegas   (06.09.12)
One democratic state where everyone is treated fairly and equally under the rule of law. This is the only option that will work for the long term.
18. Israel/Arab Palestine
Luiz F Haddad ,   Niteroi, Brazil   (06.09.12)
Mr. Abbas and other Palestinian leaders must, in fact, recognize and respect Israel. It means ending terrorist acts, renouncing to erred "rights of return" and abolishing hateful Anti Semitic propaganda inside and outside. Only If they do it, Israel will have to withdraw from occupied terrirories. Out of "Two States", limited by secure and redrawed borders, there will never be peace into "Holy Land". Of course, it is difficult, but it deserves, yet, a chance. Salutes from a true friend.
19. A warning? A WARNING?
Devorah   (06.09.12)
There's a saying in law enforcement: "Never play the other guy's game." Let Abbas play his pitiful game of fantasy by himself, and let the world watch him crash and burn, once again.
20. How soon we forget
David ,   New England   (06.09.12)
It wasn't too long ago that they said that if they had a state, not all of the palestinians would automatically become citizens. They also said violence isn't taken off the table. "If we don't return to peace negotiations."? He is the one who walked out of the UN when Netanyahu offered to negotiate.

1. “Israel is turning the Palestinian areas into an apartheid region.“ In Israel, arabs vote and are represented in the knesset. They sit on the Supreme Court and go to the same hospitals as the Jews to be treated by the same arab and Jewish doctors. Abbas has stated that any "Palestine" will be judenrein. Hamas' stated goal is to kill the Jews. They teach this to their children. Who is for apartheid? Who has turned the area into an apartheid region? Hint: it ain't the Jews. 2. “The Palestinians are not stealing land. You can not steal something that is yours or you legally own.”
You are right, only you have it backwards. The arabs first came in the late 600’s AD with the Moslem conquest. Their next big wave was in the early 1900’s in response to the economic improvement of the area due to the late 1800’s arrival of many Jews. The next big wave was in 1948 when Jordan wanted arabs to fill the void of the Jews that were kicked out, to guarantee that the Jews wouldn’t return. The Jews, meanwhile, have been there for a few thousand years. The Jews cannot steal “arab land” as it is legally owned by the Jews. Read some history, then post.
23. The United Nations Charter, article 80 of 1945, is where
Adam Smith   (06.09.12)
the U.N. expresses its adoption of the decisions of the League of Nations that were taken in 1922. Mr. Abbas knows the meaning of those decisions of course, and the fact that the U.N. Charter make them not only part of international law, but an irrevocable ones as well. Therefore, he attempts to fool the world and circumvent international law, of course. And the cynical U.N., and perhaps even Mr. Obama if it were not before elections time, would go along with the scheme.
24. Abbas is probably going to delay his move until Obama is
Sheldon J. Warsawski ,   Florida, USA   (06.09.12)
reelected, thus assuring Obama's support for the move that is contrary to American policy and stand in contrast to the wish of the American people.
