1. Just treatment
Shalom ,   Ashdod, IL   (06.15.12)
Any person who beats his wife has already proved that he is no man, hence, they should all be castrated and just for the hell of it force him to take female hormones. Maybe then he can meet another "man" who will beat him thinking he is do this to a woman.

While this is a serious issue, your idea's are frankly bizzare. Furthermore, I wonder what you'd propose be done to the less frequent, but still existant group of women who beat their husbands?
3. Shameful.
Luiz F Haddad ,   Niteroi, Brazil   (06.15.12)
Domestic violence, that hurts women much more than men, is a shame. When it occurs because of religious radicalism, it is worst. In my country, today, we have a hard law against it, since 2006. Israel, a democratic and humanistic State, must never tolerate these bad actitudes; including because of several ladies, courageous Israeli soldiers.
4. Agunot
Danny ,   London UK   (06.15.12)
You've left out a major point. Wives have to bear in mind the conditions for their 'Get'. The rabbis are more likely to suggest a 'Get' than a shelter, and puting the husband in jail makes it more likely the wife will be an agunah.
5. Family pressure
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (06.15.12)
When my wife left her first husband for being abusive, she waited seven years for a Jewish divorce/ 'get'. When we later met and got engaged, the first people to come to wish us Mazel Tov were her first husband's parents and sister and brother-in-law. Families are not as unaware as the article suggests.
6. The Haredi ladies should learn how to sabotage the brakes of

husbands who beat them. Oh, dear, an accident and no more husband to beat them. Rig the seat belt so it fails, too. That is what the Muslims do.

Israeli 2   (06.16.12)
Men, anywhere in the world, just for being men have no right to be abusive of women. They should never raise their hands against any woman....and if they are TRUE men, they would never threaten any woman with anything. Just let them go and be on their way.
9. Do religious texts encourage wife abuse? Censor it.
Michael ,   California, USA   (06.16.12)
Government has the responsibility to control what is taught in schools and obviously women abuse should not be taught. If Tanah text can be interpreted as supporting abuse, those text parts should be censored by the government. The Kings described in the Tanah dominated many wives, loved them but also controlled them. And how about the story of Yaakov and Ribvkah + Leah, there is domination described. Much more abuse can be suspected in the Tanah, material for the department of education in Israel to censor.

11. Say it isn't so, Joe
Scarborough1414 ,   Scarborough, Ont.   (06.16.12)
This article is obviously written by an anti-Hareidi secular humanist. Everybody knows that in the Orthodox community, women are not abused and in fact are revered as the mothers of our children as is written in the Pirkei Avot. Women take pride in their role as wives and mothers and a virtuous woman is valued above precious gems (Mishlei 31). The value of tznius (modesty) is the highest regarded; our girls do not walk about nak'te hait and inflame passions needlessly, but cover themselves in a kosher manner so as to bring about an atmosphere of emunah and kavannah. The social ills seen so often in the secular world have no place among us and never will so long as we keep our faith and our values; values that could do some good in the secular society were they to be implemented. An example of which would be the spread of AIDS, almost unknown in the Orthodox community.

13. So, Joe, EVERYONE knows?
Gene Graczyk ,   Santa Rosa, CA USA   (06.17.12)
I grew up in an abusive household and saw what my father did to my mother when I was a small child so this is personal with me. No, dear friend, everyone doesn't know (or believe) that the haredim only honor their women. The shameful displays against women in the haredi neighborhoods and elsewhere show clearly the prevalence of a violent streak against women. The blind rage, for whatever reason, is what we ALL see and know. Beat your wife, the mother of your children, and go to jail first and then to a well-deserved hell later. Pretending that this problem doesn't exist is to enable it.
14. Charidi women
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.17.12)
Many years ago i knew a Jewish female doctor abroad . One day i said her [ who had many charidi female patients ] How happy those women look ! Charles , was her answer , You're so wrong . Often they cry in my office , i'm the only person to whom they can talk .
