Joel ,   Israel   (06.24.12)
Thank you Yigal your right on target and the stage is set for all who embrace this false peace. Although I don't think it was the west who failed recognize it. It was us Political islam headquarters is in Ramalla Israel if it can exist in israel it can exist anywhere.
2. Smaller Cars
Ron ,   oc, us   (06.24.12)
If we in the west particularly in the US can see our way to smaller cars, electric cars and if possible American cars and get off of mid east oil we can break the back of OPEC and all of the mullahs, brotherhoods and even hezbollah. Without Western/Christian money the Arab world will starve. Currently Egypt can not feed its population, investment is non existant, oil revenue is down, tourism is down and crime is way up. We will see if it is springtime in Egypt or if winter will continue.
3. many in the West did predict this
al   (06.24.12)
It was very plain to see that this is what the U.S. has been arranging and pushing for. It is the U.S> backing which put the Islamists in power.
4. I disagree with the title ! The west are CLUELESS
Iranian Hunter   (06.24.12)
It is not that they failed to predict, they are CLUELESS, they are very afraid to offend their arab masters / friends besides them. So they can't freely speaks or complain. In other word, they are already dhimmis.
5. The Exact Time And Place Were Unknown.
Baruch ,   Houston/Israel   (06.24.12)
We have been anticipating this little Arab springy thingy for a long time. Meantwhile it has produced practically no change. The algorythm is that Arab-Persian power equals militant corruption, rampant poverty and oppresion, and a fervent clam to enfeebled helplessness remains unchanging.
6. Not ISLAM! (It) "IS LAME" I guess
Opinion.   (06.24.12)
The second they will get to power they will 1) Steal that money they weren't able to steal in opposition 2) Start killing their enemies (which would want to get to their money) 3) Show off a few times 4) Calm down satisfied like governments they've overturned Actually they will stop using the liberal language out of laziness or out of #3 above. Am I sure about it? Yes! Since unless G-d means something else, human nature doesn't change! Not Islam but (it) IS-LAM(E) I guess)))
7. An important article! Share it!
Peter ,   Londonderry   (06.24.12)
8. Congratulations Egypt!!
OJ ,   Lebanon   (06.24.12)
Amazing how people are so against Egyptians voting for their own president. You hate them that much, you want oppressive dictators out of your own selfishness. Egyptians have a voice, and they used it. Morsi is already much more moderate than Netanyahu, so look in your own backyard and at your extremists like Netanyahu and Leiberman. Congrats Egypt on freeing yourselves from the crippling grasp of Mubarak and Insha'Allah this is the begining of a new, better age in Egypt!
9. Whata joke #3
Rose ,   Tulsa,USA   (06.24.12)
Al you are so very correct, I saw this coming when it started...........obama knows just what he is doing and you and I see the fruitation of obama action after all he is one of them...............
10. Agree, except it's a victory for Islam; not "Islamism"
Steve   (06.25.12)
11. With a Muslim Brotherhood win...
Taz Man ,   USA   (06.25.12)
...all-out-war (with these animals) draws closer for Israel; so prepare!
12. I SAW THIS COMING AND WORSE STILL
AMERICAN HINDU ,   USA   (06.25.12)
No surprises. Have a Jewish friend here in the US who was so happy about the Arab Spring, that the Middle East would be suddenly transformed into an oasis of peace and goodwill and friendship. I told him "Beware what you wish for....it may come true'. It began with Tunisia, then Egypt and Libya. Wait till the Assad regime falls. You will really miss what you had! Hope the West would stop taking sides in Syria- especially when they do not really know who they are dealing with. The Saudi Arabians and Qataris are pushing the West to another confrontation which will lead to the Wahabisation of the Middle East and an end to the Christian communities of Syria & Lebanon
13. Ehh wrong.....EVERYBODY saw this coming
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (06.25.12)
In the West as well, the warning bells were ringing. Because of our support for the secular tyrants, the West have pushed the people into the arms of the only credible opposition there was: the Islamists. Now we have to pay the price
14. #8 Yes, OJ, indeed we are very selfish
Tahl   (06.25.12)
We want an Egyptian president who will keep and maintain the peace treaty with us, so that all of us would not have to worry about another war, which could result in heavy casualties for both sides, and destabilize the entire region. How selfish of us. We want an Egyptian president who will keep and maintain the peace treaty, so that we could continue the joint military cooperation in thwarting terror activities in Sinai, and keep the area stable. How selfish of us. We want an Egyptian president who will be responsible enough to pressure Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel, to avoid a military escalation with us - in which Gaza always suffers. How selfish of us. We want an Egyptian president who will keep and maintain the peace treaty, so that we could continue to have fruitful business together - especially in tourism and Gas export, which greatly benefits the impoverished Egyptian economy. How very selfish of us! Another brainwashed Arab moron...
15. To: Ron at No. 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.25.12)
Yet the United States continues to arm many Arab states, including oil producers -- Saudi, Kuwait -- and continues to feed them. Let's see -- they charge outrageous prices for crude oil, and we send them grain, beef, poultry products and arm them to the teeth, while they scream "Death to America" and burn the United States flag. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
16. Obama Cairo Speech was the beginning of the Arab Spring
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (06.25.12)
"I am also proud to carry with me the goodwill of the American people, and a greeting of peace from Muslim communities in my country: assalaamu alaykum."
17. They are following in your footsteps
Nina ,   NYC   (06.25.12)
Israel went with rightwing religious government 3 years ago. That shocked the west, but we had to deal with it. Egypt learned from Israel. Hopefully, they won't stone women in their cars for 'modesty reasons'.
18. OJ @#8:
Israeli 2   (06.25.12)
No....you seem to read us wrong. If indeed Morsi is better than the others and will bring prosperity and peace to Egypt, we welcome it. All of Israel seeks true peace despite what they poisoned you to believe. We just fear that Morsi is worst going down the road of Gammal Abdel Nasser.
19. #8...boy you have idea...
galilean ,   Israel   (06.25.12)
Netanyahu and Leiberman dictators?? Are you kidding?? You have no idea what Israelis are like. We might be slightly apathetic in social issues (that might be changing)...but do you really think we would accept any Jew as a our total leader??
20. As foretold!
John Prophet   (06.25.12)
The Islamic Caliphate is forming all around Israel, next to fall after Assad will be the Hashemite Kingdom. When that happens, the Islamic tsunami will be fully formed to wash Israel into the sea.
21. #19 Galilean
Rachel Stevens   (06.25.12)
Exactly what we think. The fact is Netanyahu came second in the last general elections in Israel. With Livni winning the popular vote. Now Kadima, the party she led is in the coalition and Livni has been totally sidelined. Sorry to say this, particularly after the amount of American taxpayer's money pumped into Israel. At least in Egypt the person who won the election has been made President
22. Who didn't predict?
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (06.25.12)
I don't understand Walt's surprise. It is no different than the Leftist's surprise that Sharon's destruction of Gush Katif brought rockets on Jewish civilians, exactly like the Zionists predicted. If a nobody Talkbacker like I predicted this, it means that the extreme Left "experts" who dominate government, press and academia are either really stupid or are paid to lie. The question is what will happen now? The optimists see a pan-Arab "moderate" Islamist alliance under Saudi leadership. These are the same people who say Israel is the problem in the Middle East and the ones whose predictions are always wrong. The other option is that the Islamists think the Arab world is ruled by the West and that the Saudis are a puppet regime. They will manipulate arrogant, racist and corrupt Western leaders like Obama, to free the Middle-East from American domination. At least there can be no more arguments: Obama really is the worst US president, far worse than even Carter.
23. #21 Rachel Stevens - what's your point?
Tahl   (06.25.12)
Are you saying that the American aid to Israel should dictate who our Prime Minister would be? While American aid is very much appreciated, it still gives you no right to interfere with our internal politics. Our politics is our choice to make.
24. Well, Mr. Walt...
jerusalem   (06.25.12)
As you can finally see, citizens of the Muslim world have also discovered the puppets put in and supported by the west has proved a disastrous choice to keep in power therefore leading to the Arab Spring in the first place. You didnt mention that in your article. It has resulted in nothing more than the regulation of dictatorships, the cessation of being independent and autonomous. Egypt has been in the midst of failure and misery long before this win by the Muslim Brotherhood.
25. Cultural vs technical timeframes
R Narz ,   Toronto   (06.25.12)
Do not let the presence of automobiles and cell phones fool you, the people using same are largely thinking in the year 700 AD.
26. what are you tallking about Mr. Yigalt Walt
Feedo ,   Algiers -Algeria   (06.25.12)
‎''Still, after trying out various ideologies and models of government – including secularism, socialism, pan-Arabism and tyranny to name a few – the region’s citizens are now opting for the Islamist alternative en masse, in what is essentially a grand revolution of re you talking abomonumental implications for the Mideast and the ut world at large.'' (what are you talking about Mr. Yigal Walt...region's citizens hadn't the liberty to choose options, the first time they did is once they get rid of tyranny that used to be backed by US-Israeli administrations. Religion is the essence of our society and you have to be used to it - which role is significant in shaping your country policies too at the only difference we are not for religious motive occupaying others' lands. For God Sake are you thinking we are really THE THREAT for world Peace, Do you have intellectual honesty to say it ? if not...Silence. Revolutions in progress...
27. I know I predicted this and worse
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.25.12)
After the rest of the dictatorships fall then they will turn on themselves and consume their revolution with many more until all of the current states splinter into many pieces.
28. Spring upon us
Art Schwartz ,   Laguna Woods Ca. USA   (06.25.12)
Now we have 2 "presidents" we must must vote out. If only the Jews of America will wake up in time to realize we too are in real 1939 danger!
29. John False Prophet
Avram Goldsmith ,   Toronto, Canada   (06.25.12)
Islamic Caliphate is doomed and perish as the same cause and effect from XIII century, and from then you are on slope of distraction because you embrace ypu
