1. Have it your way, Arab MKs
Vlad   (06.29.12)
But if your sector wants funding for education, healthcare, development, and public services, well....
2. There is no reason they should NOT
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.29.12)
do national service . They enjoy some of the benefits the State gives them , so they have to do something in return . I don't think that military service is also required for them , i don't see them fighting against their arab brethren .
3. Money has a very important role in modern society
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (06.29.12)
If arabs reject to contribute sharing the burdens of the state, give them not a single penny or agorot. It must be applied in the case of induviduals as well as communities. No public health care, no education, not a penny for developments.
4. "will push Arabs into a civil revolt"
Kfirnik ,   Boston, USA   (06.29.12)
Why? Nobody gets a free ride.
5. If Arabs can not serve this country they should be stripped
STOP the joy ride ,   on Israel's back   (06.29.12)
of their citizenship, rights, and deported to Gaza or PA territories. Either support and help the country that feeds you and provides for you or GET OUT. We don't need such NON citizens. And ALL should also be made to sign a document of allegience to the state. This free ride by so many who only suck benefits from the state.. or WORSE, are openly aggressively hostile to it has got to STOP. Signing and signing up are true tests of anyones allegience. Every democracy has these guides except Israel.
6. Citizens
Israeli from Turkey   (06.29.12)
If they are not willing to do their part as members and citizens Israel, then they should have their citizenship cancelled and be expelled from Israel.
7. A tricky problem...
Yiannis ,   NIcosia, Cyprus   (06.29.12)
.. we are facing here in Cyprus, with certain groups of the population refusing to carry their fair share of the burden, but wishing to enjoy equal rights and privileges (of course). The debate here is moving towards the direction of community service or placement in government departmetns doing low-level office work, combined with a longer service. Of course, in case of war, these people will be useless, but I suspect they would have been useless anyway. I wouldn't want to have somebody next to who is completely unreliable when the s**t hits the fan...
8. YES YOU CAN!
ilani ,   Israel   (06.29.12)
i can understand why you would be upset! especially since you confuse IDF with IOF (israeli ocuptaional force) Many Jews don't want arabs serving either, but no is asking them! You use israeli, services! dont you DARE deny it! hospitals, health clinics, etc! start downloading - in the army now by status quo. make it your ringtone, and welcome!
9. #3 Gold Al-Mighty
observer ,   Egypt   (06.29.12)
so you reserve the Gold for Jews and give up Al-Mighty for gentiles.
10. Lords of the House
Moragh   (06.29.12)
Arabs have it kinda nice living in Israel... Scot free! I wouldn't trust an arab as far as I could throw one but if the arabs want to live in a sane country then they must "do their bit" in return. If not, imprison them. No big deal... it happens in other countries. When you're "called up" you're "called up". Do your bit or get the hell out!
11. # 1 Well do they pay taxes. The article says
ben   (06.29.12)
60 years of injustice. " Israel was founded on the destrucion of our people." How do you adress the injustice so there can be peace.
12. Conscripting Arabs is a bad idea
Ron ,   oc us   (06.29.12)
Encouraging them to leave Israel is a good idea. They should go to school in Arab countries, do national service in Arab countries, housing should be built for them in the PA, Jordan and Gaza. Not all but most are a national security threat and an economic ball and chain.
13. ynet giving a platform for the traitors
Julie ,   Israel   (06.29.12)
Until the Arabs i.e. Tibi, Zoabi, El-Sana ,Sheikh Khatib, et al show their loyalty to Israel instead of traitorous, outrageous anti-Israel behaviour, well then they can have NO rights. We want them gone, out of the Knesset, out of the country.
14. Service for all
Roxy ,   Israel   (06.29.12)
Is a great idea, let the Israeli Arabs do national service within their communities that will help their communities flourish, and allow the Haredi do the same in their communities by helping with the elderly/infirmed in their areas, or working with single parent families.
15. no 'shared burden, no 'shared benefits.
tiki ,   belgium   (06.29.12)
If you are a citizen of a country, you must participate, even if you don't like all measures. It's called solidarity. If you don't want that, you should leave to a country which is more measured to your wishes & solidaity. The times of only taking & complaining are over!
16. Arabs vs. Haridim
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.29.12)
Unlike requiring Haridim to serve in the IDF, this is a dangerous step. One must always consider that any given individual Arab may be forced to fight against a family member - a situation that cannot be forced on ANY person. National service OTOH can be required, but must be part of a package that includes full citizenship rights for all Arabs - which today despite the rhetoric - they do not have. That includes all of the normal governmental subsidies that all of the Jewish settlements and communities enjoy. Tibi is an idiot, but the fact remains: Arabs as a group are not treated as equal citizens and one cannot require that they serve as such at the same time that they are denied the rights of full citizenship.
17. is army service burden? hasbarah failure
observer ,   Egypt   (06.29.12)
18. #2 Charles Petach Tikva
Elizabeth   (06.29.12)
If the Arabs (holding Israeli Passports) cannot fight for their "chosen" country, and that being Israel, then they need to pack their bags and get the hell out. If they are so "in-love" with their own, then I suggest they join "their own".
19. Did April fools come early this year?
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.29.12)
It would be suicide for Israel to have a religious army and or with our "cousins". Let them do national service instead, please.
20. listen carefully to what these MKs are saying
avramele   (06.29.12)
Underneath their cocktail of victimhood and nationalism (they learned well from us) there is a simple accomodationist proposition: we will at some point share in the burden when we share in the promise of the state. Political equality, jobs, a fair share of the state budgets for infrastructure, education and housing, cultural respect are reasonable practical demands, and a starting point for dialog and negotiatiation worthy of a positive response. There is an opportunity cost in lost talent and lost connections to neighborings states when we do not fully integrate the arabs of Israel into the life of the nation. This is an existencial zionist imperitive that a smart Jewish government of the left or the right would embrace. Herzl, Ben Gurion and Jabotinsky all understood the eventual need for a social contract with the arab minority once the security and permanence of the state was secured. Israel is today strong enough, the iron wall exists morally and militarily to act now on this issue.
21. Arab MKs are terrified of the prospect of helping elderly
Avi   (06.29.12)
Or giving back to their own community. Reimburse taxes that are collected with no reward? All your local councils are in massive debt because you refuse to collect taxes at all and the black market is the dominant part of your local economy. The time has come to remove social barriers and have everyone serve. With equal burdens comes leverage. If the arab MKs' minds are set on casting a barrier on their sector then they will be made irrelevant. The growth and services in this country cannot be maintained by just one group and for others to just enjoy.
22. Service for all
Magdalena ,   Belgium   (06.29.12)
So they should not have an Israeli identity card
23. Question for Israeli Arabs!
Susie ,   Scotland   (06.29.12)
If war broke out and Israel was attacked or invaded at all fronts do the Arabs in Israel think the invaders would stop and ask are you an Arab or a Jew before they shoot?
24. 1, 2, 3 - that's the point, we don't get our fair share
Muhammad ,   Shfaram, Israel   (06.29.12)
We have nothing against the IDF and have no problem serving in it. This is a matter of principle - we're mad that the state treats us as second class citizens and makes us live in filth while denying our every request to improve our living conditions. Go drive through an Arab village - it's a pigsty, anyone used to living in a Jewish town would throw up. Why do you think this is? For years we've been asking the government for any budget at all to build schools, green spaces, playgrounds for the children, shopping centers or a mall for the local residents, and what have they constantly told us? No. One time they even said directly to our face - "Jewish residents are more important". Tayibe was just denied money to build a park with because, I kid you not, "Kochav Yair requested a budget increase". We're simply not as important as Jews and not as high a priority. We respect the IDF, that is not the matter of principle here. The issue is that the government constantly treats us like filth and the scum of the country and then has the nerve to ask that we risk our lives for them. We're not Haredim - go look at Elad or Modiin Illit and compare it Umm-El Fahm or Kafr Kana. They're Jews, so they receive an actual city. What do we get? Simply put, we see no reason to contribute an equal part of the burden when we do not receive an equal part of the burden.
25. What is Netanyahu thinking? Arabs CONTRIBUTING anything????
(06.29.12)
It's unthinkable that the million and a half Arabs who live in Israel, who get millions of stipends every year from the state, who get medical service and all other services of a developed state would actually contribute something to this state. Isn't it the Jews who do the dirty work like - give their lives defending the state, contribute to the research, economy and development of the state, who volunteer and fight for a better society so that they (the Arabs) can only benefit from the Jews' hard work and sacrifice? Why change anything???
26. Tibi You are a complete NUTCASE
Tim ,   Brighton   (06.29.12)
He is ACTIVELY trying to promote division in Israel Society by promoting ISOLATION and SEGREGRATION of young Israeli Arabs THAT is what is called Apartheid. And MOST young Israeli Arabs REJECT HIS OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOUR As for claiming that he doesnt want Israeli Arabs to fight 'Arab Brethren' you wonder if that guy is mentally unbalanced! A Muslim will fight another Muslim or anyone else if THEIR COUNTRY IS ATTACKED OR UNDER SEIGE And moreover Tibis stupid rants DONT STACK UP against what young Israeli Arabs feel. HAS HE BOTHERED TO FIND OUT? Or he he so preoccupied with his puffed up sense of self importance and arrogance ALMOST WITHOUT EXCEPTION the Israeli Arabs we know in Haifa, in Nazareth, Gallilee, Jerusalem, Jaffa SEE MILITARY SERVICE as POSITIVE and WANT the opportunity to join. And they want to see their communities ENDORSE and ENCOURAGE that view NOT CREATE BARRIERS. So where does that fool Tibi GET HIS INFORMATION or does he make it up as he goes along? National Service gives Israeli Arabs life skills teaches mutual respect and tolerance of all Israelis of all religions, team spirit and mutual trust and protection Go to Hyde Park Corner in London, cafes in Berlin Brussels or Paris....any weekend..and you will find some of tthe MOST VOCAL and ASSERTIVE advocates for Israel are young Israeli Arabs for whom being Israeli and Arab are or Israeli and Jewish or Israeli and Christian or Druze work in harmony. These are Israeli Arabs who are perfectly comfortable and confident in their own skin That Nutcase is OUT of tune with young Israeli Arabs, OUTof his mind and as an useful MK...OUT of time
27. No service no my money. I mean taxes. I meen out
Alex   (06.29.12)
28. Arabs in Israel!
macktheknife   (06.29.12)
I fail to understand the mentality of the Israeli's to allow arabs to live scot-free and do nothing for their keep. I sure wish I could do that in my country... unfortunately that is not the case and so I say all arabs born in Israel or not should depart as quickly as possible. I'll never understand Israel in the first place giving them a homeland to help destroy Israel. Sometimes I do wonder if also the Israeli's are normal "up top"?.
29. Member of Knesset=member of the ruling elite ms Zoabi!
Estel ,   Netherlands   (06.29.12)
And why should only Jews put their lives on hold for 2 or 3 years in order to protect the Arab sector? If Arabs cannot serve in the IDF, then at least they can do social service and relief the burden of the country.
30. Arabs have no prob receiving benefits
Israel Watchdog ,   Israel   (06.29.12)
A large portion of those that receive national benefits (health, unemployment etc.) are Arabs. They have no problem with receiving. They "should" also fork over support for the country they live in!
