1. Bibi bends to the haredim...
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (06.29.12)
here we go, there will not be a really fair draft law! Bibi surrenders to the haredim! What a shame! Whitout personal sanctions, I doubt that more haredim will enlisten! Bibi, now Im very disapointed, I believed in you...
2. #1 Bibi bends to reality
Robert ,   USA   (06.29.12)
The "sanctions" that need to be imposed on any who do not join the IDF or perform national service need to be the end of stipends for that person, not some harsh and immediate penalty.. This will avoid a "social flare-up on the ground" and reduce the drag that non-workers put on the economy long term. You are right to keep the faith in Bibi - he is dealing with reality.
3. what social flare up?
peter ,   tel aviv   (06.29.12)
a social flare up happens when a group gives and gives and gets nothing in return. So eventually it reaches a boiling point and they go out onto the street. Since the haredim only take and take and don't want to give anything in return you call it social injustice and not a flare up. But I am sure Bibi and Yishay will find a few billion to calm that poor disadvantaged group for at least a few months. Until they have to listen to a female singer again.
4. Discrminination!
Robert ,   Romania   (06.29.12)
This is disgusting. If you have no sanctions, what is the point of making a law. Bibi is by far the most useless PM the country of Israel has ever had. Seculars should have the same right to dodge the draft like the haredim. They might not study in the time they win, but they end up paying way more taxes.
5. More Netanyahu Spin
Michael ,   Haifa   (06.29.12)
Has nothing to do with a "social flare-up"...it has everything to do with haredi support for his government or any future governments led by him. He can fool the "social flare ups" of the general public with the way he applied theTrachtenberg Report, but cannot fool the Haredim with the Plessner Committee. About time Netanyahu disappeared from the political scene.
6. Without persoanl sanctions there will be a social blow-up
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (06.29.12)
Bibi is reading the public wrong. If there are no personal ramifications then there will be a social flare up. Everyone knows that if it is only aimed at institutions there will be corruption, misreporting, and a continuation of the problems from the past. It is time that personal responsibility becomes the norm not the exception in Israel - from 18 year olds doing proper national service all the way up to the PM.
7. First Bibi and then Israel
Truman ,   Israel   (06.29.12)
This wimp of a prime minister thinks only of himself. What a great failure he is.
8. If it's mandatory, how can there be "no sanctions"?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (06.29.12)
All parties, it seems, want to square the circle. The haredim reject compulsion, but reject any impact on the benefits granted to those currently exempt. So too the Arabs reject compulsion, while demanding the same benefits that currently go to those who do serve. Netanyahu wants to keep all his coalition partners, while finding a solution the High Court will accept. It can't be done. Someone's ox will be gored. Going the "all volunteer" route might be theoretically possible. It would certainly please the Arab and haredi communities - as long as the benefits and affirmative action continues. It would thrill the shirkers and left wing activists of Tel Aviv. The religious Zionists would continue to serve - until they're tasked with evacuating their brethren in the settlements - but there are not enough of them. The only ones enjoying this spectacle are Israel's enemies.
9. PM to Plesner Cmte: drop personal....
Ilan ,   Be'er Sheva Israel   (06.29.12)
Why bother having a law if the law/rules are not enforced. Back to square one with inequality then? Bibi - you can't keep EVERYBODY happy! The way you're going EVERYONE will be unhappy.
10. Funny how the facts are different than what are stated
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.29.12)
It's not that the Haredim don't serve. They serve far more than leftists or the Arabs. The Arab community makes up about the same percentage of the population as the Haredim, yet over 10 times as many Haredim serve as Arabs. The leftists also have a far lower rate of service when compared to the Haredim. There is a solution increase the aid for education to veterans and make sure to raise costs to non-veterans and no aid whatsoever.
11. NO SANCTIONS, ITS NOT A HAREDI THING
MOTI ,   USA   (06.29.12)
picture it like this, a typical young adolecent at age of 18 refusing to serve in the military, at 18yrs with no will to contine education goes joins the work force and starts his life with a daily job. 50yrs later after paying so much taxes in social security this man wants to retire, at age of 65 you trying to tell me this man is not eligable for any pension cause he refused to serve. Where is the social justice? Sanctions and harsh punishment will not yeild results
12. REAL WAY TO HANDLE THIS IS BENIFITS TO THOSE WHO DO SERVE
MOTI ,   USA   (06.29.12)
13. The airport is open. Draft dodgers can leave...
Scott ,   USA   (06.29.12)
whenever they like, and not come back.
