This so called journalist is in my opinion no more than a spy and a traitor. This is not a situation in which he had a classified report on a investigation like the Pentagon Papers in the 60s. From what I understand from news reports there was operational plans involved and other sensitive info. Letting this in my opinion him go makes Israel look like a banana republic. The Question is who is protecting this guy from his punishment.

Compare this sentence with imprisonment of the SHAS politicians actually for nothing (leaving their children orphans for several years) or with Katzav's sentence. In the former Soviet Union Blau would have been shot for high treason. The Israeli judges even don't pretend that they are objective.

Even if the lawyers don't manage to get the sentence reduced knowing the Israeli legal system providing she is a good girl she will be eligible to apply for parol after just 18 months. I imagine she will be out very very soon and Blau 4 months community service is a joke, you can get more severe punishments than that for speeding. If this is the outcome then the Israeli taxpayer would have been better served by just taking the documents back and forgetting the whole thing, would also have been less humiliating for the courts. We need new legislation stating exactly what your allowed to do in the name of free press before it becomes a crime. Proper legislation and the judges will not be afraid to take on the media.

Every secret Israel has is now going to be sold to the highest bidder. Sell the info, take the money, and do some community service. Very nice. What deterrent is there not to commit this crime? The sentence is 4.5 years but she is eligible for parol after 18 months so she will probably be released this time next year. I imagine she will probably end up a poster girl for the left wing media and the peace camp.
