31. weight lifting for girls

I feel very sorry for the Kutin girl. I think that her parents are unfortunately misguiding her into thinking that this is a great thing. She will undoubtably suffer terribly from these activities when she is older. Not only the fact that she can cause herself physical damage, but weight lifting is NOT to be an admirable trait, whether one is a boy or a girl. What should be stressed is moral values, acts of loving kindness-especially to ones' fellow Jews, scholastic achievements, culinary achievments for girls, housekeeping skills, family skills

This is not usual and neither is she ,the family claims themselves that shabbos is hard with these events. She is clearly using adrenalin rushes .This can be an inspiration to Jewish strength and youth ,but should it be ,we are a nation of Torah and mitzvahs .But I guess a little Jewish power does not hurt ,but not at the expense of her other obligations as a Bat Yisroel .That is test for her and the family.

As you seem to have no familiarity with the sport, I'd suggest you not assume that a physical activity lacks brains. If anything, the mental game in Powerlifting is just as, if not more, important than the physical aspects. Teaching yourself to overcome barriers you thought were impossible is an extremely beneficial aspect of self-esteem and even moral education. I'm sorry you can't see out of your box. Shabbat Shalom.

There is a difference between weightlifting and powerlifting (the latter of which this girl is involved in). I'm not sure why you say it is not an admirable trait, as it cultivates both physical and mental toughness, both qualities that men and women should have. And if she becomes relegated to housework as an adult, this strength base would only help her, not harm her. I'm not of the opinion, however, that Jews are to be frail, feeble, and docile. Perhaps we differ.
