1. Plesner is right
Dan   (07.18.12)
Bibi sees the Haredim as the real Jews and himself as their secret agent : he's a Haredi in secular dress, twisting the state and the world to the fundamentalist Judeofascist cause.
2. stupid Kadima & Labour
Dan Goldman   (07.18.12)
Stupid Kadima & Labour worry only about how to gain votes and grab power. Iran is laughing at the internal Israeli squabbles and proceeding full speed ahead with the bomb. Only Netanyahu & Likud can guarantee the security of Israel.
3. Iran happy
Frank Baum   (07.18.12)
Iran happy about the developments as their nuclear build-up speeds up. Once they get the bomb, Mofaz, Plesner & Shelly can pack their bags and emigrate to Sudan.
4. And you would want some Haredim in the IDF
Chopper4 ,   CPT, South Africa   (07.18.12)
I am all for the haredim helping the state of Israel, but to enlist them and give them arms and ammunition is a bad mistake. Imagine if someone stole the Hareidi's gun and then went on a rampage on Bar Ilan street? They throw rocks on Shabbat desecraters. If you throw a gun into the equation could spell bad events. I think a separate hareidi program needs to be set up and not IDF. you have a better chance of getting Palestinians to serve in the IDF than Hareidim. I would not trust either.
5. BB Gives in to religious blackmail from the harideem
Haim ,   TA   (07.18.12)
Just goes to show the man has no balls, just the same old blah blah blah . He fails to listen to the people , they have had enough of the harideem living their so called life style at our exspense. Time to draft the harideem to either the IDF or national service, those who dont like this are free to leave, start by cutting the benefits.
6. #2 Devine Help not those whom DENY
Martin ,   SA   (07.18.12)
Naive political opportunists go through life imagining and believing it is they whom can run and control the flow. The poor leaders and most of the flock of Kadima Labour and others are in denial and convinced pure ethical equality is the solution to the draft. No transition and no respect and building up trust and a command structure. This means zero leadership and no connection to the Unity of the Devine. Some people have no concern for damage to peoples lives even Hareidim. Have a life be in the win win team. Bibi is showing strength of purpose and concerned leadership qualities instead bashing Hareidim blindly at every opportunity. Plesner go to shul and find your roots, you seem lost and empty and need help of the Devine. Am Yisroel Chai.
7. smart Bibi
ed   (07.18.12)
he could be saving himself and the "medina" from serious G-dly retribution.
8. sore loser
shalom ,   J town, Israel   (07.18.12)
netanyahu is the smart one he realized that a all out draft would never work so he try's to compromise so at least he will get something. but plesner and mofaz are sore losers they cant admit they are wrong in thinking the hareidim will just do their bidding they are to full of themselves to believe that and say " OK, so we will compromise and at least get something instead of nothing" they still think that the hareidim can be manipulated little do they know....
9. Yes, but will Kadima back Liberman's bill?
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (07.18.12)
With Kadima's stated goal of 100% universal national service via Bibi dead, will they back Liberman's proposal to do just that? Apparently today we will find out if Kadima was really in this for the equality in the draft or just to play with Bibi.
10. # 1
Ehud ,   Rehovot , Israel   (07.18.12)
You got it right all in one, agree with you 100%. This idiot will destroy Israel from within unless soon replaced .
11. Plesner
Nora Tel Aviv   (07.18.12)
If Plesner is not neutralized before, he could be a candidate to lead Kadima. Bad dreams for Mofaz.
12. Kadima has never earned my respect
annie ,   Israel   (07.18.12)
Anyone who walks out and quits is a losing party. One that we can't afford in govt. I'm not religius, but I recognize that the Haredi are a part of Israel just like we are. It seems to me that it's the seculars and liberals that are more full of hatred and intolerance than the orthodox. We should not be like that - support your religious brothers and be kind to one another to keep israel strong.
13. not necessarily
ej ,   tlv   (07.18.12)
The Plesner commission was intended to derail the whole process of the Haredi draft bill. It doesn't mention how their draft would be financed- i.e. how will the government pay the hundreds of millions of SHekels to accomodate tens of thousands of new soldiers and Natioanl service conscripts!? Also, it is NOT a universal draft, because it excluded Haredi and Arab women, who must be drafted as well. I for one, think that no woman should be drafted, but rather allowed to join the military or National Service voluntarily; that could save a lot of money for the state that can be used to draft Haredi and Arab men!
14. We can't afford to NOT have Bibi as PM.
Israeli ,   Haifa   (07.18.12)
These men are such whiners! They didn't get what theywant so they slander, defame and delegitimize the Prime Minister. Bibi knows what's he is doing! You need to slowly integrate the Haridim into service. And the Haridim will need time to learn that the army is NOT Hareidi. Bibi is a strong leader who is THE ONLY ONE who can get us through these next few dangerous years. All other candidates are cow tower's to international pressure. Bibi IS the only leader who is truely lookin after Israel's interests.
15. Cold math expedience and answer to #14
PaulZion ,   Israel   (07.18.12)
Bibi did the cold math, that's all. He estimates that Kadima will get very few votes next elections, so he decided to sacrifice the interests of the country as a whole for another term in office, by capitulating ( in practice) to the haredim. He was probably extorted by them behind the scenes, where they told him that if he supports this bill, they won't go with him next time around, and would break the alliance. Like I said, cold math and unscrupulous expedience. #14, I don't get you. Strong leader? He has wriggled like a worm in daylight on this issue from day one. The wind changes direction less often than he does. That is not strong leadership, that is populist self interest, in order to stay in power - and to hell with what the country really needs.
16. Anne @ # 12
Terry ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (07.18.12)
Are you out of your mind, do the seculars go around dictating to the haredim what to wear etc when to travel . Get you mind in order madam.
17. Draft
Lena Porat ,   Tel aviv israel   (07.18.12)
Netanyahu has shown once again that he is not a leader in favor of a democratic state. All those supporting equal rights must vote for a candidate supporting this view, and obviously it is NOT Netanyahu.
18. Plesner's late wake-up call
Clean Air Bill ,   Brussels, Belgium   (07.18.12)
Before (kodem) Mr. Netanyahu took the responsibility to govern Israel in a responsible way to maximize social cohesion, it was, as far as I can know, Kadima (kadima) who was very much in charge for a pretty long period. If this core problem needed so urgently so drastically a solution that could be so easily agreed upon, why did Kadima not force ahead with that solution in their years of government? Neither early elections nor now charging so heavily as much against Likud as against Orthodox Judaism, both pilars of the State of Israel, does not seem to fit well in any interpretation of national democratic interest.
19. Bibi´s only chance, for the sake of Israel,...
Keren ,   IL-BR   (07.18.12)
....is to promote a whole and throurough restructuration in the army ,and start it NOW! Women must be taken out of the army, with few exceptions that truly proves necessary, but as a rule, women must not be drafted to army itself but to National Service. That done, haredim will not have arguments not to comply to enlist and any govt. that caves into their demands in such case, must be impeached. Bibi should start this "revolution" now, because this will happen ,sooner or later in Israel´s army and as soon as it starts, the best for all.
20. #18, did you forget about the war, perhaps?
PaulZion ,   Israel   (07.18.12)
21. no.15 Who changed Kadima ask to Join the Government not the
(07.18.12)
otherway. Mofaz thought that by being Vice PM he could manipulate within the government. What were the red lines Mofaz is talking? Plesner to draft at 23 and BIBI at 26 of Age, what is the big deal??? You cannot draft all the Haredim at once the Army's infraestructure is nor ready. Under the TAL you have more thatn 100.000 haredim drafted, if you replace this with a prudent law you cand draft another 100.000 and increase it step by step. Same with Arabas. Are you willing to bring 200.000 young arabs at ince to the army? It is not only about Haredim is about arabs as well
22. Creation of Kadima split Left, more than it split the Right
COLBERT ,   Treadmill, ISS   (07.18.12)
...to the benefit of Likud today. Kadima and Labor must unite to defeat Likud in the next election, or Kadima must dissolve itself, into Left and Right factions, to reunite the Left, if there is to be any hope of ever having a Left leaning government in Israel again.
23. to Terry #16
miri ,   israel   (07.18.12)
I believe Annie has got it right. I am secular but appreciate the haredeem as brothers. Not all are fit to serve in the IDF and those who are not could do a stint of public service.
24. Plesner is TOTALLY WRONG
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (07.18.12)
Bibi is careful not to create problems. He knows that it is better to encourage chardim to join by giving attractive benefits. A mass draft would cause a mass rebelion; we don't need civil war here. As for the economy, no one has made Israel a better place to live. Some people can't afford apartments? Look outside Tel Aviv, there are plenty of places in outlying areas that are much cheaper.
25. Plesner
samuel ,   London UK   (07.18.12)
Plesner is WRONG.He killled the opportunity.Had he worked as an experienced negotiator and not as a Haredi Basher he could have succeeded.
26. True colours and impulsive confessions
Clean Air Bill ,   Brussels, Belgium   (07.18.12)
Well, the true colours [of Mr. Netanyahu] make a masterpiece of modern performance art. Badly, the impulsive confessions [of Mr. Plesner] put a backstabbing scenario in the spotlight: "Israel cannot afford to see Netanyahu lead another term in office. One was enough. Another one can be disastrous for Israel's economy," he said. You see: Kadima spins the Haredim and the PM’s responsible attitude into a platform for squarely indecent, Livni-flavoured comments to seek improper political gains by sowing avoidable antagonism and intolerance over Israel. PM Netanyahu sought national unity, probably encouraged by President Peres. Kadima unmasks herself with this Greek trick of the Trojan pony. Mr. Plesner’s military, academic and entrepreneurial record would suggest the persuasive skills to motivate the Haredim themselves into complementarity between two just causes. With certainly an extraordinary IQ, he frittered the opportunity to upgrade his political EQ by working properly with Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Rivlin. Misguided by the French Connection?
27. genuine opportunity to establish a national unity government
rebecca ,   Modiin   (07.18.12)
Mr Plesner, a coalition between and almost defunct kadima and one other party (Likud) does not constitute a national unity government. Bibi did try to get everyone's approval. Pity Kadima was only thinking of what it wanted.
28. Desperation of Israel's Left Wing
Max G. ,   Augsburg, Germany   (07.18.12)
It will be difficult, perhaps impossible to get Israel's populous to fall for the lies of the Left again after the failure of the Oslo accords and terrorism against Israelis that followed. Knowing that they can no longer promise "peace", their strategy has moved to promise to fight social inequality. The truth is, regardless of who Israelis vote for in the next election, the rich will get richer and the middle class will continue to disappear. Ironically, the Laft still control most of Israel's media ( except for Yisrael Hayom), all the Kibutzim and the Histatrut (sadly, today more of a political blackmailing tool than a labor union). Demographically, without the support of the Arabs, the Left would virtually disappear.
