31.  They got themselves in a jam," It's not the
Jack Daniels ,   Lynchburg TN.   (07.22.12)
Government's responsibility # 11 to rescue these people, even though they live in Israel, they more than likely or believable hate the Jewish State, I learned a long time ago if I need to go somewhere, I found out walking wasn't crowded.
32. To: No. 11
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.22.12)
The Druze students trapped in Syria have rejected Israeli citizenship. Israel owes them nothing. Moreover, try suggesting that Switzerland must do something to earn your loyalty. They'll send your ass packing right on back to wherever you come from. If anyone deserves help, it would be the tiny Jewish community in Syria who are forbidden to leave. Druze who opted to retain their Syrian citizenship are exactly where they belong -- Syria.
33. Yes send them back to Israel but...
Tayfun_Turkey ,   Istanbul   (07.22.12)
do not forget give them WMD to take with them to Hamas. Syria trained those Druze to support freedom of Palestine...
34. don't blame the Druze
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.23.12)
The Druze of the Golan would have no problem declaring allegiance to Israel except for one problem called "Ehud Barak". Until the Syrian civil war started, Ehud Barak declared that one of his main aims in life is surrendering the Golan to the butcher Assad and evicting the Jews living their from their homes. Thanks to that idiot, the Druze had a choice: swear allegiance to Assad or risk being tortured to death when Ehud Barak betrays you like he did the SLA. Now that it is unlikely that even the Barak will surrender Golan, the Druze can speak the truth.
35. If the Golan is sovereign Israeli territory...
Ceki Gulcu ,   Switzerland   (07.23.12)
If the Golan is sovereign Israeli territory, then so are its inhabitants, including the Druze who may have rejected Israeli citizenship in the past. The Israeli state has an obligation to protect the inhabitants of the Golan, which incidentally would go a long way in strengthening the Israeli claim to the Golan. The stranded Druze students in Syria presents Israel with a rare opportunity to show its good will to the Druze and presumably earn their loyalty.

zionist forever   (07.23.12)
The fact the Druze of the Golan won''t swear allegiance to Israel has nothing to do with Barak. From as far back as 1967 Druze were offered Israeli citizenship and whilst some took it up others did not and this lot didn't We have also had PM's willing to give up the Golan for a toilet paper treaty since oslo at least. Rabin was willing to give it up, Peres was, Bibi was first time round, Barak was, Olmert was. The only PM in the past 20 years has been unwilling to even consider giving up the Golan was Sharon.
37. #1 - if they were Jewish kids, they might not be alive
William ,   Israel   (07.23.12)
They'd either be taken hostage, tortured, and paraded in front of Arab TV, or used as pawns in a prisoner exchange, or just simply killed and buried in a shallow grave. Had it been Jewish kids in Damascus, they'd be sold to Nasrallah and held in a house in Bint Jbril as human shields while Hizbullah shells N. Israel, daring a response. Rather, these are Druze students, safe in their apartments, running low on bread. Something tells me, this isn't the same urgency, John.
38. #13 - many Druze show loyalty to the State
William ,   Israel   (07.23.12)
They are the major part of the Israeli Arab population who are loyal to the State, followed by Bedouins. The rest of the Israeli Arab group are highly suspect, and for good reason. The only Druze who are suspect are those on the Golan, and I believe they act this way for survival reasons. They truly believe Israel will one day give up the Golan for peace, and Assad as they know him will exact revenge on anyone not loyal to him. Just look at what Assad has done for the past 17 months to his own people, if you doubt their concerns. Some may demand to be part of Syria no matter what but consider this - there is a town that straddles the Israeli and Lebanese border in the Golan. The local Druze residents voted unanimously to be part of Israel, and immediately demanded IDF protection from the Lebanese, specifically Hizbullah.
39. #18 - Walid Jamblatt sold his soul to Assad, Nasrallah
William ,   Israel   (07.23.12)
years ago. He used to be a man of power and conscious in Lebanon, and now he's just a shill for the pro-Assad camp, in order to save his own skin and the Druze of Bakaa Valley.
40. #36 thank you
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.23.12)
Thank you for the correction. I was wrong in only condemning Barak and not condemning the others. On the other hand, the Druze were right in playing it safe, living in Israel but waving the Syrian flag as an insurance policy
41. Thank you, Pedro. (Obrigado).

Luiz F Haddad ,   Brazil   (07.23.12)
I am not traitor. My country is Brazil. I have, in fact, Christian Lebanese roots. Including because of it, I support a honoured peace among Arab States and Israel. The continued conflict is so harmful as stupid. I am also a Judge, upholding International Law. No more comment for your offensive words.
43. Thank you, Mr. Eaglebeak.

tom ,   toronto, canada   (07.23.12)
perhaps the druze community in israel should be consulted on how to help them. the druze living in israel are loyal citizens, serve in the army, and generally contribute to the welfare of the country. they are also druze, with ties to the other druze communities in lebanon and syria. even though this article quotes one druze (who was apparently jailed for security offences), there are many others, who might have a different perspective.
45. The Golan Heights Druzim
Big Al ,   Zichron Israel   (07.23.12)
Having been at one time a long term resident of the Goland and worked alongside members of the Druze community there, I can attest that these people are loyal to Israel as well as being exceptionally honorable and loyal to their family . The Druze who live in Majdal Shams, the most northerly town on the Heights, have family who were trapped behind the disengagement lines after the six day war. Any word of derision about the Syrian Government by the " Israeli Druzim" could mean punishment. For many years it has been practice of Druzim from the Golan to go to study in Damascus, under the sponsorship of Russia, They don't go to study terrorism but instead to become chemists, engineers and similar worthy professions that they practice among the Arab speaking populations in the Golan and throighout Israel. This is their way of contributing to Israeli society instead of serving in the army, which they cannot do because of fears of what many happen to their family in Syria.
46. Why these druses does not demand own state ?
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (07.23.12)
A lot of other minorities demand own state and separate their area from the "mother state". So do among manv others kurds, uygurs, tibetians, tamils, chechens, dagestanis, abhazes, beludshis, west papuas , at least 20 indian , burman and thai minorities. Are they so happy to live in the artifical states of Syria and Lebanon created by british and french politicians ?
47. they can stay there- traitors!

Miriam ,   Miami, USA   (07.28.12)
Jewish Kids are Israeli Citizens, these Druze kids most likely are not citizens.
52. # 22
Miriam ,   Miami, USA   (07.28.12)
I do not know where you are or where you come from, but there are many Druze in the IDF. of course these Druze are Israeli citizens. Do you think people who are not citizens of the USA or any other country in the world can joint that country's army? NOT tell these Druze to become Israeli citizens and then try to joint the IDF
53. # 34
Miriam ,   Miami, USA   (07.28.12)
You are correct.
