Jail them!
32. Fury of a thousand suns
Avi   (07.25.12)
is what I feel when I read these articles. "Why should we serve in the army, we work 500 times harder defending the universe by reading a book". "Why should this law be repelled. I want free money and 99% free time. This is oppression, I don't like sweating". We created this monster, we give them thousands of shekels per family per month to do nothing, and they do even less than that, and then we wonder why they're not only hideously ignorant according to statistics, but also breed like rabbits with 8 kids by the age of 23 because they've got nothing to do. And Bibi wants this to continue. Amazing. Mind boggling. How? Why? Who can stop this madness?

Coming from a Swiss resident, that's rich. How about all the pilfered Jewish-owned bank accounts? How about all the pilfered Jewish-owned art? How about the Swiss insurance companies that have refused to pay out on wholly paid-up life insurance policies? Most people would agree that the system in Israel granting stipends and military exemptions to people claiming to study Torah needs to be seriously overhauled. But that would be Israel's problem, not yours. Given the history of Switzerland's despicable acts before, during and after World War II, and the organized theft that now totals in the trillions of dollars (counting interest and penalties), you really need to shut up.

Although the Amish were not compelled to serve, and many did with great valour. Then returned to their way of life afterwards

so if you're prayers do more to keep israel safe, maybe tsahal should stop doing anything, and then we will see if you're prayers keep us safe??!
36. Bad apples everywhere
Naftali ,   Modiin   (07.25.12)
As mentioned in this article there are tens of thousands studying so even if they found 100 guys willing to do this what does that translate into? This paints a picture that this is all of them or even a lot of them but that is not the case. That being said I believe in Kollel and think it is important however it needs to be funded with private money not government money. First when funded privatly only those that should be in Kollel are in Kollel not everyone belongs in learning. Also being government funded causes to much fighting between Jews.
37. I hate the idea of being subject to fraud
Josh ,   Wellington   (07.26.12)
I know them, I grew up with them around. I always told my wife; do you think the meat we buy at 300% markup from Melbourne is Kosher? I know the bastards are more than capable of turning a blind eye for a fistful of dollars. But the cow is already dead before slaughter... No worries I can fix it. $500 cash and your cow has a Kosher stamp.
38. #33 But Sarah...
Henry from New York ,   Currently in Israel   (07.25.12)
If all that stuff is true then how do you know that our Swiss friend here doesn't dislike the stuff you hate about Switzerland as well? Is this a guilt by association thing?
39. #13: You mention the Amish in the U.S.
Runner1983 ,   USA   (07.26.12)
There is a big difference when comparing the Amish with the Haredim. Sure, the Amish in the U.S. have an insular culture, but they work! They financially support their families and others in their community. They are excellent craftsmen, and take great pride in the puritan work ethic. You point out that Amish men did not need to serve in the military. The problem is the Haredim are a much larger percentage of Israel's population than the Amish are of the U.S. population. With the relatively high growth rates of the Haredim, they at some point will need to serve. The Amish also give their children an opportunity to spend time in the secular world at age 18, so the children can make a choice between staying in the Amish community, or joining the secular world. It is clear that many Haredim want to work, but the real issue is their Rabbis don't want them to, for fear of loosing power and control. If life as a haredi is so great, what are the Rabbis afraid of? The societal model of Israel is flawed, and is not sustainable long term.
40. Man has been selfish
SD Charger ,   San Diego   (07.26.12)
since the beginning, nothing new to see here. This undercover "expose" beat them at their own game-light will expose darkness. Even if you changed the players to; police, politicians, priest, doctors etc, you would end up with the same result. It's up to each one of us to be honest when we think "no one is watching." Let this be a lesson of the day for us.
41. 4 Many conditions are necessary ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.26.12)
to defend Israel. Studying the Tora given to us by G-D is one very important condition. Moreover,Israel must be well prepared for war. Knowing how powerful our enemies are, even perfectly prepared,it is not realistic to believe, that we can win the war without G-Ds help ,without a miracle. One soldier with a belief is equal to force of many who have only interests. AM ISRAEL HAI .
42. Solution:end all benefits and exemptions for haredim.

43. #39: I agree
AG ,   USA   (07.26.12)
I agree with what Runner 1983 said. If the people in a society is not given a choice to choose, then even the great Rome would have to be burned down.
44. @ 38 Thanks. I'm not Swiss

No, it's a "clean up your own house before you worry about mine" thing.
46. really?
ilan ,   israel   (07.26.12)
I can't believe this suprises anyone??? how nieve do you have to be? like other Israelis don't do this? Soldiers do this all the time, they run away from base work a month (under the table) ,they come back. go to jail for a week, then back to normal! polititicians, dont get me started about them.... how about the other youths, that work as servers/ waiters ?? israeli arabs????? how about the rich? how much tax breaks do they get? i'll be the last to say i love haridim, but ripping off the system? to incite that they are the only ones is B.S.!
47. CHAREIDIM
odeleya ,   ny usa   (07.26.12)
There are bad people everywhere but what about focusing on the good honest Chareidim that learn TORAH and live very simple lives. Also, what about the majority of the juveniles prisons that are filled with CHILONIM youth. They are draining the economy for crimes that they committed. The jails are full of them. They colst the treasury millions of shekels every year.
48. left out of article: how many anwered ad
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (07.26.12)
It would be curious to know the statistics. How many men learn in Yeshivas in Bnai Brak and how many answered the ad? I would like to compare that to how many secular Russian men and women get welfare and work "in the black" (meaning under the table). We have had numerous workers in my house who are mostly Russian who get welfare but do not declare earnings since it would take away from their welfare benefits. Indeed whether it is Russian, yeshiva men, or anyone else it is illegal and all know this. Yet this is the way life is lived here in Israel.

Riva ,   Israel   (07.26.12)
Yes i understand what you mean, however, you shouldn't GENERALIZE AND CONDEMN an entire sector of people just because you aren't like them. Frankly, i don't think this matter is not such a big deal. Most of these guys just want to earn a few sheckles during their Yeshiva break. I have seen that many people in Israel from all sectors "work in the black." Do you realize that all these guys (which you think are parasites) have to pay betuch leumi even on nothing and many guys DO NOT GET ANY SPENDING MONEY FROM PARENTS. There are many young guys sitting and learning who are literally STARVING. This nonsense about stipends is almost non-exsistent! I'm saying this from an objective position because i'm "half Hareidi." I have sent my sons to the army, and i have one sitting and learning because he is very dedicated to it and serious! You should probably visit a Yeshiva and sit down for a day and check out the situation yourself. AND INVESTIGATE THE MATTER YOURSELF!
50. 19 If they were not so scared...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.26.12)
they would do more than sending mortar fire from Gaza.
51. #38 But, but Henry....it's not 'if '...it's facts
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (07.26.12)
Your Swiss friend ought have mentioned first about his nation's ugly dealings to avoid being a hypocrite. Choose to condone his lame jab?..... Stick to your digging...it's more concrete and useful
52. #11 Ora? You cant be serious!
Ze'ev   (07.26.12)
The arabs dont attack anymore with their armys, COS THE IDF DID KICK THIER BUTTS EVERYTIME THEY ATTACKED! Tora has nothing to do with! The guns in the hands of the brave IDF men and women did protect Israel! Wake up! Should no IDF be there one day, Israel will fall, even should it be fillled with yesihvas! Did you forget the shoa? The tora lerners got nearly anihilated!
53. # 41
Dan ,   USA   (07.26.12)
If an interest in defending your family and country is not enough reason to pick up arms then all is lost.
54. simple solution
dani   (07.26.12)
no more government funding for yeshiva studying. private charities can pay for it.
55. (Final) Solution of #42

End all benefits and exeptions to all leftist draft dodgers from Sheinkin! Their are 1000s of Secular, leftist Israelis who don`t serve in the Army

58. A wall of Hareidim
yitzchak ,   usa ny   (07.26.12)
Why not place the hareidim between gaza and Eretz Israel towns to Pray away the rockets, if it doesnt work send them to IDF.
59. Moti 26 , If you can't afford it
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.26.12)
don't "study" at a yeshiva , don't make a quantity of babies . Nowhere in the world are TRUE students paid such amounts as those sitting "studying" unnecessary subjects . They can work , be productive , and study after finishing their job .
60. Correction to my post at No. 57
Mike Van Harris ,   Belgium   (07.26.12)
I come from Belgium and I tell you that this pales in comparison to how Jews in the diamond sector defraud our government here... Its a shame as to the extent some people can go for money...
