1. Eitan, you apply to wrong people
vadim ,   raanana   (07.26.12)
Eitan, you should make this call not to those poor people, but rather to leaders of social justice protest and their media promoters that are shamelessly using their death for their own sake. Wide and loud explanations on how right he was, how little choice he had and how much this event pushed a stupid government to hear the “people” voices just pushes others to "sacrifice" themselves. In reality, this is just cynical and totally immoral and must be stopped. These are people that you should call
2. A weak people with no real objective in their lives fall
Al   (07.26.12)
prey to this sort of thing. Look around at your society. You want to emulate everything that is rotten everywhere else. You have very little pride in your own country and its achievements. You want to be loved by the world while denying your own being. That is what ails Israeli society. You are not good to eachother, you spend alot of time looking at eachothers plate with envy. You want to be everyones accountant but your own. Envy spite jealousy seems to be the flavour of your lives. Its time for a change. It starts with your own lives and families.
3. As I said earlier in the week
Sarah B (No not her)   (07.26.12)
The government can explain away one self immolation, two at a push, but when the numbers become the same as Tibetan Nuns and Monks they are in desperate trouble. Hence this article, our government is desperate to stop this, because not only does it put pressure on them to be more equitable in sharing the states resources, rather than concentrating it towards certain blocks of the population. It makes Israelis look around them, and more and more are not liking what they are seeing, and we can all name someone who has left for pastures new. We need a fundamental change within Israeli society, weneed to think about the settlements and their costs, and we need the Haredi to go to work
4. G-D believers don t take their life.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.26.12)
5. Eitan, the government has to change
Eitan ,   Tlv   (07.26.12)
The bankruptcy laws must be rewritten and the government must stop being involved in private debt.
6. #1 - Vadim
Devorah   (07.26.12)
It's not an either/or situation. The people who killed themselves, those who threatened to self-immolate but were stopped, and the despicable social justice protestors who have made heroes of them for their own benefit must be held to account for this madness.
7. Many people suffer like hell in this country...
This is reality ,   in Israel   (07.26.12)
Israelis. veterans, holocaust survivors. When is this government going to stop only taking purks for itself and look outside at how other people live???
8. Each previous article of E.H. sowed despondency, defeatism an
ab   (07.26.12)
-d despair. Wonder he hasn't committed suicide himself, but he is too wel-salaried for it.
9. 2 Al,you..you..and what about YOU?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.26.12)
You must be the change you wish to see in Israel. "He has a right to criticise, who has a heart to help." A.Lincoln.
10. The problem is us
ZionistBill ,   Israel   (07.26.12)
We're a mean, petty, argumentative, greedy, inconsiderate people---it's no wonder that these poor souls found a means to escape all this. Our collective soul has become rotten because of our dehumanizing of the Palestinians and the Arabs who live among us. I'm afraid there is no easy answer to this besides taking a hard look at ourselves. Afterwards we we realize that we ARE the problem, we must apologize to the world for being such awful human beings.
11. Eitan You missed the point
Dan ,   Florida - Tel Aviv   (07.26.12)
These "Social Justice" leftists have no clear or rational argument for their position of wanting the state to wipe their behinds. They are all about emotion. Thus you get a Silman whose emotions ran wild only inciting the bleeding heart radical leftists to demand a Soviet Communist system be installed in Israel replacing Democracy. Even you must know that ANYONE who cries "Social Justice" wants a Soviet Style Communist Government and they ignore that the Soviets murdered over 100 million people including Jews.
12. A very foolish article!
michael redbourn ,   arad israel   (07.26.12)
The people that set themselves on fire were mentally deranged; full stop! Changing living standards would still leave them deranged. Eitan Haber occasionally rights something worthwhile but he mostly writes drivel.
13. 10 Do you believe that ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.26.12)
there are more suicides in Israel than abroad?
14. #3 - no conection between monks and sick people
michael redbourn ,   arad israel   (07.26.12)
I'd have expected more from you. Buddhist monks spend their lives in contemplation and mediation and occasionally sacrifice themselves for a country such as Tibet. How can you compare them with a few down and outs that need psychological help in Israel? No one need go hungry in Israel! Nobody! One visit or phone call will get you food delivered from many religious groups, to your doorstep, every day, for free! And bituach leumi (national insurance) will take care of the rest.
15. wrong end of the stick
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (07.26.12)
As usual, publicity seekers and drama queens published by Ynet seek to drum up interest The guys who burned themselves did so out of despair, having given up on the system. How dare your columnist suggest the act was deliberate ? Fool
16. Eitan, for God's sake, shut up. People have to have
leo ,   usa   (07.26.12)
right to do to themselves whatever they want as long as it does not endanger others.
17. "For God`s sake stop" ?????
Nora Tel Aviv   (07.26.12)
Would he beleive in God , he would know that suicide is out of the question.
18. the problem
yosef ,   williamsburg   (07.26.12)
#10 - What you described is the ill result of True Torah being replaced with zionist ideology. Good luck!
19. Stop!
Michael Pielet ,   israel   (07.26.12)
I felt the same way about Oslo! Stop!
20. HABER: SOUND, COMPASSIONATE WORDS
Rafi ,   US   (07.26.12)
... in contrast to the hate-filled, sicko's that attack him.
21. to #3 (not her)
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (07.26.12)
so put your money where your mouth is. Wager me. Give me odds on China getting kicked out of Tibet because of the self-immol-nikkim. Put up or shut up.
22. Burn if you want - your own life - do what you want with it
Rina   (07.27.12)
Just don't expect crocodile tears from everyone
23. So, let's understand why Haredim don't despair.
Michael ,   California, USA   (07.27.12)
Most of the kipot srugot and hilonim are alike in Israel on the topic of suicide, I am sure we will agree. But Haredim have this special place above their heads where everything is just perfect. So why should a Haredi ever be despondent, why will he ever despair? It is more convenient to trust that a better destiny awaits you when g takes you in due time. Wait patiently in line like the lemming. A Haredi life in this world is without ambition, is docile, is so miserable that waiting for a better afterllife is perfectly alright.
24. Why all the criticism?
Vlad   (07.29.12)
Usually, I don't agree with Eitan Haber, but this time, he's spot-on-right. Do you all really want people to set themselves on fire, or do you all just want to poke the leftist? I have no fondness for some of Haber's views, but this time, he's right. There are other, better ways than making a martyr of yourself.
