1. What about Christians and Muslims?
Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (08.13.12)
Christians and Muslims are also Israelis. Why is their culture not taught in class? Aren't they enough Israelis for the country? It's about time Israel accept the fact that it ain't just Jewish as it's about time the anthem should be changed and be connected to the Israeli people. Personally, I despise the Israeli anthem since I can not identify to it.
2. There is not much reason
E. G. Marsch ,   Nahariya   (08.13.12)
to have Israel without Jewish-Zionist values. Its security situation is difficult and it looks--more now than a couple of years ago--like it will remain that way for quite some time to come. Israel is a democracy with all the advantages that gives, but so are a lot of other countries. To want to live specifically in Israel, it has to be because there's something special about it. Indeed there is something special about being part of the Jewish people living independently on its land. The mission of the schools is to instill this awareness. A high understanding of math, computers, English, etc. will not do Israel much good if the person is living in California.
3. #1 - Gregg
Devorah   (08.13.12)
What about Jews who live in other countries? Do their educational curriculums bend over to teach about Jewish culture? I think not. Christians and muslims living in Israel are living in the only Jewish nation on earth whether you acknowledge it or not. If they don't like what is going to be taught, they (and you) and free to leave.
4. Here We Go
(08.13.12)
More brainwashing and propaganda. These kids will learn to hate non-jews at an early age. #1 is right too.
5. Segregated education creates a segregated society
Steven Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (08.13.12)
...which is Israel's biggest problem today. "In 1984 the first integrated schools which had both Jewish and Arab students to coexist in a classroom were built by the residents of Neve Shalom...there are five integrated schools in Israel..."
6. "Kindergarteners to learn about flag"
Rabb ,   D.C.   (08.13.12)
Just don't teach them this was The prophet David's (icon), this Hexagram, King David did not worship icons and this hexagram did'nt come into usage untill after the 12th century A.D. Just don't lie on David the beloved and HaShem's blessing will be upon Israel. Teach what Zion ment to an ancient Hebrew people in the mind,,,,, not some attachtment to a place on this earth. Teach what Zion ment to the ancient Hebrews,, a high elevated place of rest and vision after struggles, hardships,, a high elevated place in the mind,,, a summit, peak, mountain, thehighest place above all this b-llsh-t, lies, wars and conflict of the day. This whole earth belongs to HaShem and is the real payground of these "Kindergateners" to Tikun Ha Olam.
7. school mandate
fiona ,   jerusalem   (08.13.12)
I just love articles about the Education Ministry instructing schools what to teach........slightly more than a week before teachers prepare for the coming year. I wonder if the Ministry is going to provide teachers with courses on forward thinking and management skills. Teaching Israeli history is one thing, adding it to a long-failed, defunked damaging system, is absurd at best.
8. One thing is for sure
Abe   (08.13.12)
Ben Gurion and those like him DEFINITELY DO NOT represent Judaism and the Eretz Hakdosh, the Holy Land of Israel. If anything, they represent the lowest kinds of Jews and nothing to be proud of and to look up to.
9. Re: Greg
Sidiman   (08.13.12)
I firmly believe it's much more high time to repatriate to your native France Greg.
10. Yitzhak Shamir a great Prime Minister who died last month
(08.13.12)
had at most a hundred people (or perhaps a bit more) at his funeral. About two weeks later the head of Jews worldwide died in Jerusalem. This great Rabbi, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Eliyashiva had an estimated half-million people participating his funeral which shows the greatness of the person. He is the one that Jews in Israel should look up to and revere learn from.
11. More right wing BS
Gadi ,   Haifa   (08.13.12)
12. #4 is actually the one spreading brainwashing and propaganda
Antony ,   Israel   (08.13.12)
I went to Jewish schools and was taught about Zionist values. I don't hate non-Jews. Looks like you don't know what you're talking about.
13. #1
Shaka ,   Johannesburg   (08.13.12)
By all means and go live in Saudi Arabia where you can sing their anthem... Sit down, and shut up!
14. The last sanctuary of scoundrels
Philos ,   Herzeliya   (08.13.12)
Less than half of all Israeli high school pupils passed the bagrut last week. One of the lowest rates on record. So in order to change the subject the Education Ministry and the principals of schools are going to wrap themselves in the flag, and hope that everybody forgets that the system has failed our youngsters.
15. will haredi schools receive this education?
nadav ,   tlv   (08.13.12)
Israel i the ONLY country in the world with 4 different State run school systems! ridiculous
16. Far from uniting citizens.........
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (08.13.12)
....it divides them. The anthem's lyrics certainly cannot unite citizens unless they are firstly Jews and secondly Ashkenazi. All that stuff about the "Jewish soul longing for Zion" and the "eye looking to the East" is only appropriate for specific sections of the population. Whether the talkbackers here like it or not as they spout their venom on poor Greg from Haifa, the fact remains that many citizens are not Jewish and many more who are Jewish are not Ashkenazi. It could be possible to retain the tune and just reorganize some of the words to make it appropriate for ALL citizens. That would contribute something positive to social unification challenges.

Miche Norman ,   Hod Hasharon   (08.13.12)
i am sure you would be up in arms if someone suggested that Jews could leave other countries It is of course a wonderful idea to ignore the Arab residents ties to this country and to concentrate solely on ours - that way we can bring up a generation of bigots who have no idea of the need to compromise to achieve peace. And Jewish values - who says what Jewish values - The Haredim - its covert thy neighbors money and steal it through your representatives in the Knesset, It the Foilishtikker rebbe with weird glasses and women at the back of the bus, is it the Baeit Hayehudi who think that Judaism is all about landgrab?
18. # 1
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (08.13.12)
I went to public school in NYC. As the US is considered a Christian country we got to have Christmas Trees and decorate Easter Eggs. School was closed for Christian holidays and if I wanted to take any Jewish holidays off while I did, it DID prevent me from getting 100% attendance awards. That being said I don't hate non-Jews and I have/had plenty of non-Jewish friends who don't hate Jews. The hate that comes in this corner of the world is coming from the non-stop spouting of the Islamic Imams. I don't know any Jewish kid--no matter how right wing that 'hates' Christians or Muslims. Feeling this is a Jewish land and we should be proud is not synonymous with hating those who are not Jewish.
19. About time!
MAP ,   Bnei Brak   (08.13.12)
20. unbelievable- these talkbacks!
orli ,   jerusalem israel   (08.13.12)
what country on earth does NOT teach its national anthem, history, roots, and what education ministry on earth doesn't set the program of what to teach???? and what do minorities do in other countries??? i am thrilled that my grandchildren will be learning these things AGAIN!!!
21. Does this go for everyone?
Robert ,   Timisoara, Romania   (08.13.12)
The Haredim and the Arabs will teach Zionism too? I am pretty sure that these sectors will teach little to no Zionism. Also, for those that besmurch Shamir and Ben Gurion (who have had flaws of character, no doubt), I am pretty sure that the fact that today you can go pray at the Western Wall has far more to do with them than with some random rabbis, regardless of how exceptional they were.
22. & It only took 64 years what a country
TheObviousDiscovered ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.13.12)
Too little too late several generations have been raised with little or no patriotism or connection to anything Jewish . While it sounds like a good start I feel it is too little too late the damage has been done and our only hope of surviving here is whether you like it or not is the strong relgious communities whose birthrate alone saves us.,
23. What is there to learn about secular zionism
(08.13.12)
when they have no jewish values whatsoever? #18 and #21, most haredi schools are not under the secular government. Although they pay taxes they don't take a dime from the government. There's no way the government could enforce secular zionist stuff on them.
24. Remember Tamir the Education Minister (LOL) who wanted
(08.13.12)
everyone to learn about Nakba?
25. #17 - Mishe Norman
Devorah   (08.13.12)
I already am up in arms...over HaShoah. The Jews did not try to usurp any country, government, authority nor culture, and they were murdered simply because they were Jews. The situation in Israel not much different. Or haven't you noticed? The arabs want us out of here because we are Jews. Ring a bell? And your fantasy of compromising to achieve peace? Do tell, when has compromising with the arabs ever achieved peace? Please, count the ways. In the meantime, reflect on the fact that Jewish values are a melange of ideations - it's not this way nor that way. But there are certain things we all have in common, and that is where the focus need to be. We are a fractured society desperately in need of unification first and foremost.
26. teaching values
me   (08.13.12)
teach the 10 commandments, there are the moral and ethic laws for everyone everywhere,it does not matter colour, religion and nationality, there are the same for all humanity
27. focus on the commandments
me   (08.13.12)
28. #3 dvorah
Gregg ,   Haifa IL   (08.13.12)
Jews in other countries aren't force to learn about other religions at school since secularism consider religion belongs to the private sphere. Jews in other countries aren't put aside of the society since they are part of it and not considered as second class citizens by all mean.
29. zionism
yakov ,   nahariya/london   (08.13.12)
zionism Is an outmoded 19th century idea whose time has long passed. It should be consigned to the rubbish heap of corrupt racist ideoligies along with imperialism and colonialism. One world, one people.
30. IT'S ABOUT TIME!
Chaim ,   Israel   (08.13.12)
It's about time Israel's schools taught the truth about Israel and Zionism. It's about time Israel's schools taught students the countless reasons they should be proud of Judaism, Israel and Zionism.
