1. Are "rabbis" kosher?
jason white ,   afula, israel   (08.19.12)
This is a profession that should be declared unkosher and banned from the public.
2. I guess they've never used one.
M. Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (08.19.12)
I have been shaving with electric razors for over 40 years and they have never pulled the hairs out by the roots. Maybe someone gave the Rabbi an Epillady instead of a razor?
3. This is old news...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.19.12)
... as soon as electric razors came out where the blade ran against the skin rabbis came out against it, saying that it doesn't comply with the scissors factor and acts as a (forbidden) blade. That being said, at least half the religious continue to use them.
4. . . . and this passes for news
Shalom Hartman   (08.19.12)
Every orthodox kid knows that an electric razor musn't give too close a cut by the side burns. Solution - either various existing machines, or removing one of the knives from others. Tzomet (not a hareidi institution) has a whole list of approved models. What happened in Kiryat Sefer was simply that the a handbook for review and information was sent out to all the homes. There was no barber who was giving a cut of less than the minimum length for sideburns - 2cm
5. is there no end to the lunacy of these people?
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (08.19.12)
6. How about the Epilady for the legs
Susya Bar Dror ,   Israel   (08.19.12)
of haredi rabbis? Is it strong enough or is the Caterpillar version required?
7. unkosher electric razors
richard sherwin ,   herzliyah   (08.19.12)
would the rabbis please list WHICH electric razors really DO pull out hair by the roots; it would also be helpful if they'd list which electric razors give a really close shave equivalent to safety or straight razors....
8. Incredible!
Runner1983 ,   USA   (08.19.12)
It is absolutely incredible that these rabbis, accountable to no one, continue to come out with this stuff, and its even more incredible that their followers don't challenge it. Is there no limit to what these people will say that controls how individuals live their lives? This is not how Judasim was meant to be.
9. Humra of the Month club strikes again
Israeli religous   (08.19.12)
Kiryat Sefer is full of good Jews trying to live a halachicly true lifestyle, but over the years they are being driven up the road of extremism with no halt signs to be found.
10. silly stuff!
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (08.19.12)
11. Refund? Isn't Israeli law applicable ALL OVER Israel?
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (08.19.12)
12. Electric shavers...hmm
Pro Knowledge   (08.19.12)
Is profound ignorance of the basic mechanics of an electric shaver for men a prerequisite to attain the rank of a Ch'aredi rabbi? This is a purely rhetorical question since the answer is a resounding YES! As the aphorism goes, "Ignorance is Bliss". Profound Ignorance must obviously be a foretaste of the Ch'aredim's version of Paradise (May-en Olam Habah) .
13. These "rabbis" don't know what they're talking about
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (08.19.12)
These "rabbis", most of whom don't have the secular knowledge of a typical high school student, clearly don't know how these things work. Perhaps they should take up engineering. (Oops! Such study is "forbidden"!) So lacking in common sense have these latest rulings become, perhaps we should start calling them "fatwas". It seems they've meanwhile violated a of wisdom from the sages: Rabbis should not declare forbidden that which the public will not accept.
14. Is it OK if i drink milk while shaving???
jb ,   miami fl   (08.19.12)
Of all the beautiful aspects of Judaism---who gets caught up in this pettiness?
15. really? how do you know that?
izzyd   (08.19.12)
16. Rabbis outlaw pig
Rube Vogel ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.12)
Yediot reporters have uncovered a conspiracy by a group of Haredi rabbis to ban eating of pig. This ruling would include pork, bacon, pigs feet and even pork rinds. Ignorance if ancient halachic issues does not make them "news".
17. More Haredi insanity
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (08.19.12)
"Is profound ignorance of the basic mechanics of an electric shaver for men a prerequisite to attain the rank of a Ch'aredi rabbi?" Profound ignorance of *reality* is the prerequisite. "These 'rabbis', most of whom don't have the secular knowledge of a typical high school student" Actually, that's being generous.
18. Control freaks ,...
snag ,   USA   (08.19.12)
19. #1 - Well then we'd just have Karaites in Israel.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (08.19.12)
20. Electric Razors
Enoch ,   Toronto   (08.19.12)
The Rabi is right. I checked the Torah. The passage "electric razor are not Kosher" is repeated 7 times, in Hebrew, English, French and Spanish.
21. The rabbi understands Torah better than anybody here
zionist forever   (08.19.12)
All you people condemning the rabbi for this statement and say he doesn't know what he is talking about I would like to know who is more likely to know more about Torah and all the rules that most people have ever heard of a man whose life is dedicated to Torah or you lot? I have a very religious cousin and I know from him there are rules about cutting hair and shaving which is one of the main reasons why so many religious men have beards.
22. Electric razors
Sherlock Holmes ,   London UK   (08.19.12)
In tradiutional Lithuanian yeshivahs all the students use electric shavers until they get married and then some grow a beard, and others contiue to shave. Reb Moshe Feinstein permitted electric razers that have a scissors action. Which specific electric razers are these rabbis now banning? It's not clear from the article which are deemed kosher.
23. Explanation
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.12)
The Rabbis have banned shavers that use what is called "lift and cut" technology. This pulls the hair folicle, and then cuts it, and the hair root then slides below the surface of the skin. The reason for this prohibition, is that this falls under the category of a razor, whose use the Torah forbids. I am not sure why this is news, this ruling has been around for well over a decade. There are those who can remove the lifters from the shaver, rendering it fit for use.
24. No 1 Jason
Sagi   (08.20.12)
It ain't no profession,its a racket.
25. to no 21 A rabbi is a man that also makes mistakes this is .
(08.20.12)
One Electric Shaver or razor don't pull the beard from it's roots, with the roots The fact is that people raze veryday or every other beacause berad grows again. If it grows again is because the roots were not pulled out. Inteligent rabbis should dedicate themselves to more usefull things. They don't have to coment in evry small thing. They should be spiritual leaders , they are not technitians . They can ruke over analogies but this is not the case. ELECTRIC SHAVER DO NOT PULL OUT THE ROOTS: HAIRS GRW AGAIN: ELECTRIC SHAVERS DONT MAKE ELECTROLISIS; THEY RAZE THE SURFACE OF THE SKIN THEY DONT PULL ROOTS
26. not kosher at all
Jorge   (08.20.12)
razors were made of meat, fried in butter, any other question
27. 25
zionist forever   (08.20.12)
I am no expert on either Torah or electric shavers but I do know that when it comes to Torah you get rabbis with differing opinions especially when it comes to trying to deal with modern technology and Torah. In this case there are more than one of them whose opinion is electric shavers are not kosher and we are talking about a haredi town not down town Tel Aviv. The critics here though how many knew there were laws on shaving , the majority of the criticis here are criticising because the rabbis are all haredi and most people on this site hate the haredi.
28. @#19 That might not be so bad
Az   (08.20.12)
Maybe they could focus more on the central tenets of their tribe at least, then! And they'd have to know how it's different from modern interpretations - a learning experience in itself.
29. Seems like Israeli women are also not Kosher
Helena   (08.20.12)
When they can't live their own life and worship at the Wall.
30. #27
Nathan ,   Israel/USA   (08.20.12)
Don't hate Haredim, but I am very tired of Cult leaders using Judaism and the Torah as a tool to control there victims. The Torah Does NOT Prohibit Shaving with a Razor, it says " לֹא תַקִּפוּ, פְּאַת רֹאשְׁכֶם; וְלֹא תַשְׁחִית, אֵת פְּאַת זְקָנֶךָ" Many Scholars have come up with a variety of interpretations of this but these are interpretations ONLY.
