61. What exactly is the president's role?
rebecca ,   Modiin   (08.17.12)
Does anyone really know? I thought it was kind of like the queen of England at this time. Look good (or at least regal), appear at state functions. Welcome foreign guests. And keep your mouth shut on politics. The queen is a similar age. How come she knows when not to speak.
62. American Presidents all love Mr. Peres. Why? Realy why?
JJJ   (08.17.12)
American Presidents all love Mr. Peres. Why? Realy why? what did he supply to the Americans? realy what??? Do you know???
63. To #62
Ron ,   Tel Aviv   (08.17.12)
you mean Carter and Obama? He is uneducated guy from small Polish village. What do you want from him?
64. peres
17.8.12   (08.17.12)
the same old block-head following him from his earlier days. Is there no gentle lady in Israel who can lull him to sleep (permanently) on her knees?
65. peres
ed ,   reno, america   (08.17.12)
Peres by this statement proves himself more of a fool than in even his past foolishness. Israel does not need americas help and to depend on america now while it is supposedly lead by the proved anti Israel president obama is total and utter foolishness. if he believes the lies that pour forth from the mouth of this president then he is an even bigger fool than i thought

Unlike the Queen Peres spent most of his career in politics where he was elected and had a mandate to talk about all this stuff publicly or criticise the government. Now Peres is an unelected president but the urge to speak out is still to great for him and he very often forgets he is president and thinks he is PM again. The Queen has never been involved in politics she was born to look regal and promote the country which she does well and she also knows get political. Peres just likes collecting honours people bestow in him and the sound of his own voice. If the man had any sense he would retire from the presidency ( he had is fun ) and once he is a regular civilian again he can go on talk shows and give interviews to the media all about how he feels about government policy, sadly though looks like we are going to have to wait for him to die before he quits politics.
67. Peres is a highly intelligent political strategist
Neville Chamberlain ,   London UK   (08.17.12)
he has my full support
68. to #44: newsflash! peres is president.
shloime ,   toronto, canada   (08.17.12)
shimon peres is the president, a (supposedly) non-political figurehead position, and NOT in the cabinet or government (or even the knesset). the labour party which he used to head is also not in the governing coalition.
69. spot on
Marcel ,   Costa Rica   (08.17.12)
President Peres is spot on. As the Head of State, he makes use of his prerogatives to be informed, to ask, to suggest, to propose, to warn, and to encourage. He has the necessary moral authority to do so and the credibility as a respected leader. I see nothing reproachable. Besides, I personally think he is a lot wiser than Bibi Nethanyahu.
70. Nobody took seriously threats in "Mein Kampf" - its result??
Jouko ,   Finland   (08.17.12)
Iranian top leaders - and not only one leader but many - are continuously giving out in publicity most serious threats about wiping out the Jewish state. That cannot be an insignificant matter!! The leaders of state must be understanding what they are doing! They are responsible for their words! And they repeat the threats again!
71. Achmanimadmanjad = Hitler
Nachman   (08.17.12)
Guys this is 1938 the world stood silent during the Holocaust where six million of or brothers and sisters perished in the most cruel ways. The madman in Iran is spelling out what he intends to do to Israel as Hitler spelled out in Mine Kampf it is not the time to rely on Barak Obama but rather Rely on G-D almighty destroy the nukes in Iran delay can only hurt or spell desaster.
72. 46 & 56
zionist forever   (08.17.12)
Peres is not a private individual he is the president and the law does not allow the president to go on tv and say the government has got it wrong and I know best which is effectively what he is doing. He is of course entitled to his own opinion and in private he can tell Bibi what he likes, advise him tell him he is a piece of slime, anything he likes but in public the president has no opinions of his own. Peres is there to shake hands with diplomats and kiss babies freedom of speech does not apply to him. If he quits the presidency he can take a megaphone an go on the streets of Tel Aviv criticising Bibi as much as he wants and it will all be perfectly legal but as long as HE WANTS to be president he he has to accept the limitations placed on him but if he can't accept those limitations then all he needs to do is step down.
73. Stop blaming Mr. Peres
Ros ,   Tel Avivg   (08.20.12)
The Hon. Shimon Peres was only stating what 80% of the country feel, and why! When we attacked Iraq, there was such an element of surprise it was an unbelievable success - but now, all Bibi and Barak can talk about is when we are attacking Iran, not if. It is enough - and stop criticizing Peres - he is the best statesman and ambassador we have had for many many years.
