Time to stop dreaming/pretending about maintaining a Jewish presence in any Arab or Muslim country. Time to stop dreaming Jews have friends or support in the gentile world as well.

The synagogue looks beautiful. However, since when is something from the 19th century 'ancient'?

Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (09.05.12)
was 100000 in the I. century. ( Josephus Flavius )The total world's population was about 80 millions that time.So without antisemites today would be about 10 million jews in Alexandria alone.

Egyptians are a mix of multiple peoples who have come in over the ages and intermarried. The name of the country though is the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Egypt is not an arabic state. Semitic arabs consist maximally 10-15% of its population. The great majority of egyptians are originated from berber-negroid population living in the fertile areas of Sahara before it was completely dried out. This happened 8-10000 years ago. As the desert grew, the inhabitants wandered to the Nile valley, settled there and their descendants are the 80-90% of present day's Egypt's population.
13. Synagogue
Michelle ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.06.12)
Alexandria is not the whole of Egypt and in Cairo there are still two synagogues functionning intermittently (there being no men, one needs visitors to have a minyan).
14. This story is fake "news"
JB ,   Washington DC, USA   (09.07.12)
There is not one whit of evidence to corroborate this story. J-post first caught onto this, and others have since. I wish the editors at Y-Net would bother to do some fact checking before they rush to print. "A member of the Jewish community of Alexandria on Monday denied reports that Egyptian authorities had canceled Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur prayers in the city – citing security concerns – saying he would personally lead the services during the High Holidays."

Read the article. The 19th century structure was built to REPLACE a synagogue in the Hellenic style. It didn't say how long the Hellenic style synagogue had been in place, but I'm will to bet it had been there for quite a long period of time..
16. 12 Istvan Thanks a lot for the info.
