1. israel-Syria border is 20 miles to the west. Golan is Syria
American Vet   (09.13.12)
2. #1, Wrong. Syria never acknowledged those lines
Jake   (09.13.12)
Syria never acknowledged either the 1923 Mandate boundaries or the 1949 ceasefire lines to be an international boundary. In fact, no recognized international boundary has ever existed between Israel and Syria. Possession is 9/10 of the law. As for the remaining 1/10, it is Syria that chose to take a gamble in 1948,1967 and 1973 and attack Israel. They lost. Israel has extended civilian rule in the Golan Heights. The land is part of Israel, and will remain in Israel. You can take consolation in the fact that your beloved Syria does in fact control the eastern Golan, Quneitra, and the summit of the Hermon, which had all been in Israeli hands by the end of the 1973 war, but from which Israel had later disengaged.
3. #1 Syrians wanted to get Jerusalem- instead they lost Golan
Anna ,   Montreal, Canada   (09.13.12)
Syria lunched a war against Israel and lost Golan Heights. Don't blame the victim his victory. Golan Heights are not Syrian according to the rules of the war.
4. To #1 golan syria/israel

5. #1 - and the US' true border is 2000 miles to the East
William ,   Israel   (09.13.12)
Perhaps you should be giving Mexico and France a call about new borders in America's heartland.

In Mexico your smart enough to know that when you fight wars sometimes you lose territory and there is no point to demanding every last centimetre of land lost in a war that took place decades ago. Even after 45 years Syria is obsessed with the Golan and on more than one occasion we even came close to deals but because Israel was not willing to let the Syrians control a small strip on the shores of the Galilee there was no deal. I am sure losing all these territories was hard for Mexico but you got over it and moved on which is something the arabs have not learned to do.
7. The Alexandretta Salient
Imraky ,   Netanya, Israel   (09.20.12)
In 1939 Turkey annexed the Alexandretta Salient (Hatay Province) from Syria. It contained a large Syrian Arab population. In 1967 Israel, fighting a defensive war, took the Golan Heights which had a very small Arab population. A thousand times more fuss is made about the Golan than about Hatay Province. I wonder why.
