This may sound hopelessly unrealistic, but if the ads were sponsored jointly by Pam Geller and a prominent Muslim association of some kind, and if this collaboration was clearly marked on every ad, people would conclude that it's only Muslim radicals that are being targeted, not all Muslims. And Geller wouldn't come across as a bigot who's targeting all Muslims. Geller's right to put up the ads should be defended, and there's nothing wrong with conveying to any intolerant zealots on the subways that they're in a strictly NO JIHAD zone. But because there are Muslims who ride the subways who don't share the fanaticism of the jihadists, it's unfortunate for everyone that this particular community would feel demonized or threatened. I don't think that's Geller's purpose, but it might end up being a sad by-product of the ads, which imply a subliminal connection between jihadist savages and all Muslims. I support creating an atmosphere that's openly hostile to hate-filled radicals, but not to moderates. My prediction is that many Jews, not just Muslims, will feel very uncomfortable with these ads. The mention of Israel implies that the ads speak for Jews in general, just like the mention of Jihad suggests that the ads target all Muslims. Neither is true, but that's how many will perceive it.
