1. Strange... that disqualifies half of Shaas members?
John ,   Europe   (10.04.12)
I mean, few of the most prominent Shaas members are involved in various scandals... Can they be cantors? If yes - that poses a problem, no?
2. Seriously, who put this man in charge?
Talula ,   Israel   (10.04.12)
Why does he think he is god's messenger? What a complete and utter loser of a man.
3. Nothing novel about this ruling, however...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.04.12)
... years back I once attended a minyan on Shabbat and the congregation waited for the cantor to arrive--in his car. Yet, while at the podium he neither desecrated the Sabbath nor took shaved the skin of his face directly with a blade. This made me wonder: Is he secular when he commits the violation and observant when he fulfills the commandment? As of today I have not found an adequate answer to this question.
4. After reading this...
Debbie ,   Israel   (10.04.12)
I know many women trained as a cantor, and with all of "Rabbi Yosef's" rules they fit the bill. If he would like I'll send him a list in order for him to listen
5. judging the wine by the bottle
shloime ,   toronto, canada   (10.04.12)
i guess the aged rabbi was asleep during prayers this year, because he seems to have missed some key parts. specifically, the part called "hineni" before the repetition of the musaf amida, where the hazan specifically, and publicly, prays that his words be accepted, even though he is not worthy. or perhaps the learned rabbi didn't understand the meaning of the words?
6. "If it were free, anyone would jump on the opportunity"
shloime ,   toronto, canada   (10.04.12)
i guess that's why rabbis are paid by the state, to prevent all those other people from jumping on the opportunity.
7. SOME SUPER JEWS ARE MORE JEWISH THAN OTHERS
Davezee ,   AMERICA THE BEAUTIUL   (10.04.12)
ALL JEWS ARE EQUALLY JEWISH, ask any non-JEW in the world. Some Jews, according to OUR own Jewish KAKAMEINI, are much more equal than other Jews. So if you are not equal enough, you are not Jewish enough, ...so WHAT? what absolute UTTER nonsense!... and they wonder why this ULTRA super- Jew with the Micheal Jackson coat, is ignored by the vast MAJORITY of Jewish people.
8. Rabbi Yosef, one of the finest minds of the 16th century
Davezee ,   AMERICA THE BEAUTIUL   (10.04.12)
give me a break! There are women cantors there are men cantors there are secular cantors there are moderate cantors, there are fast cantors and slow cantors, there are big cantors and small cantors, some sing with joy some sing with discordance, BUT... All cantors have ONE FABULOUS THING GOING FOR THEM... THEY ARE ALL JEWISH! May the UNIVERSE BLESS ALL CANTORS ultra and secular, and may they not be judged by these (very highly myopic narrow minded, shallow questionable and VERY human "decision makers") We who believe strongly in DEMOCRACY also believe in RELIGIOUS DEMOCRACY, not religious demagoguery.
9. Why doesn't ayatollah yusuf mind his own
jason white ,   afula,israel   (10.04.12)
business and keep out of matters pertaining to us Jews?
10. Seculars are fully Jewish.... so what?
Ephraim ,   Tapuah   (10.04.12)
Jesus was also a Jew, but you probably wouldn't want him as your cantor.
11. Keep being koffrim and disgracing the Rav's name @ talkbac
Shalom ,   Israel   (10.04.12)
You know what the reason was why the Bet HaMikdash was destroyed and the Jews went into exile? Because of the koffrim like you who shamed and rebelled against the elders of Yisrael. HaGaon rav Ovadia Yosef Shelita is one of the wisest men in Israel ( and the world ) and an expert in halakha. You should be ashamed of yourselves, very ashamed. Without any knowledge of Judaism nor of this great person. Next time think twice before you begin with your lashon hara, and have respect for your fellow Jews, even more for the Chachamim.
12. Pork
Gill ,   MontrĂ©al   (10.04.12)
So Eating pork yet wearing a kipa is called Kosher pork
13. So Jewish is a label.
Gill ,   Montreal   (10.04.12)
Rather wear Armani
14. Perhaps, the good Rabbi was taken out of context?
(10.04.12)
and on top of that something was lost in the translation! I am not a Rabbi, just a good Jew and I cannot imagine not allowing a mourning Jew not to recite Kaddish for his parent. Something is missing here.
15. It's ok to be shomer Shabbos and to cheat ...
Essie HaKohane ,   FL. USA   (10.04.12)
On your business dealings and treat your employees as dirt and not live by hillel's teachings. As long as you observe the Shabbat and eat kosher and use an electric shaver you are ok as a Hazan.
16. Control freaks ,...
snag ,   USA   (10.04.12)
Is there any aspect of your life that they don't stick their dirty noses in and tell you what to do ??? ,...
17. #11 if many people in israel think like you, Israel is lost!
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (10.04.12)
and you wonder why so many jews are leaving israel or denie to make aliyah?! If you dont know, slowly Berlin becomes a big israeli city!
18. Chillax, it's not out of context...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.04.12)
... he's not talking about not saying kaddish. He includes everyone. He's talking about not leading the congregation, which is customary when one is saying kaddish (and preceeded the saying of kaddish historically), because the congregation has certain obligations. There is nothing new here, he's just saying to yank a cantor if he was given the honor erroneously. That's kind of new. But he doesn't really explain the distinction between someone who has once violated Shabbat or shaved with a razor vs. someone who isn't doing it at the moment. That would have been nice.
19. the Jewish ayatollah (end).
Ani ,   Brazil   (10.04.12)
20. should sefaradim
Someone ,   Brazil   (10.04.12)
burn their iPhones too?
21. what's contraversial?
david ,   new york   (10.04.12)
leading prayer is not a musical activity, it is a religious activity and if you dont believe the words you are saying, you have no business leading the congregation
22. to #9 Jason
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.04.12)
Because the Rav is looking for excuses to have "paid" cantors..... his supporters onto the government payroll.
23. #14 - Reciting Kaddish is not what this is about
Chaim T. ,   Jerusalem   (10.04.12)
This is about leading the congregation in prayers. Being the Chazan. Of course anyone in mourning can and should recite kaddish. That is not what the Rabbi Yosef was referring to.
24. #17 Wrong, the contrary is true
Shalom ,   Israel   (10.04.12)
It's both wonderful and bad news that the seculars are leaving Israel. We don't need koffrim in the holy land, we need G_d-fearing Jews, who will keep the mitzvot. The more Israel will become religious, the faster the redemption will come. However, the bad news is that many Jewish souls will be lost, and will face terrible punishment chas v'shalom if they keep being koffrim, and don't repent. I strongly urge every Jew to study Torah, and do teshuva before its too late. History is repeating itself, if you haven't noticed it.
25. the same "Rav" who said Israeli soldiers
A ,   Belgium   (10.04.12)
are killed because they don't "shomer shabbat". Israeli soldiers are killed because they are protecting YOUR worthless tachat, cretin! Shas also paid 600 shekels in the 1988 elections (I probably have the date wrong) to hang posters of the criminal Derai in their windows. How do I know? My neighbors did it.
26. Newest REFORM: Ultra-Orthodox pretenders to Nouveau-Kohanut
American-Israeli Jew ,   Israel   (10.04.12)
without yichus, of course. That's what their vain "praying for Israel" is all about, trying to convince you that they're the new quasi-priesthood. Just another INNOVATION in a long line stretching from European Medeval times.
27. yes indeed
isaac ,   mexico   (10.04.12)
doesn't really explain the distinction between someone who has once violated Shabbat or shaved with a razor vs. someone who isn't doing it at the moment... ahh wait its the media that brings it up with their own words and not the Honorable Rabbi
28. yeah.
isaac ,   mexico   (10.04.12)
i guess my dear friend there isn't because He is Rabbi Ovadia Yoseph you know what i mean?! He is the authority . shalom
29. theres a minimum
isaac ,   mexico   (10.04.12)
You are correct my dear friend. indeed we should find someone as pure as possible to attend this position just as we need to find a political candidate as honest decent and sincere as possible to represent us Please G-d we shall see the good in each one of us as we like to see the good in our selves shalom
30. What a nutter
