1. The grounds for the civil divorce must be adultery or
Rivkah   (10.01.12)
economic desertoin for the wronged party to remarry so that the remarriage is not adultery to the Lord. An adulterous marriage is adultery and unrepented of adultery results in a person being turned away from God's Kingdom. King David repented of the adultery in his life and grieved over that. The eternal life of the soul of this woman is on the line and all people can do is attack the former husband for trying to protect her eternal soul if that is what he is doing by refusing to sign a get so she can remarry. Fornication and adultery and sodomy and murder pollute the land and eventually the nation.
2. Women refuse to receive gittim all the time
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.01.12)
as part of custody negociations. We were given this right before the dark ages, but no one is fighting for men who are stuck and unable to remarry.
3. Women and gittim
jj ,   montreal   (10.01.12)
If a woman refuses to except the get it is easely resolved by placeing the get in escrow with the Rabinate to be picked up any time, leaving the man free to marry.
4. get
john ,   toronto   (10.01.12)
Don't wait to get it. I would say any couple who cannot reconcile within six months of living seperately the next is divorce. Make the best of life and live happily. Better is to know each other, and then to come together as a couple. If each other's expectations are unreasonable then no point in entering such a relationship.
5. Rivkah, here's a pair of socks, use them!
(10.01.12)
You may be normative and put the socks in your mouth. or you may be new age creative and use the socks to cover your hands and thereby prevent yourself from typing. In any event silence, woman, for by talking you are proving that Rashi was correct when he called all women gadfly!
6. @2 that's because they just get the rabbis 2 sign 4 them...
(10.01.12)
yep, its done all the time. Wife refuses to accept a get...husband goes running around the rabbinate and collects the necessary 100 signatures and remarries. so Orly nope you are wrong.
7. I urge the guy to give this gal a GET
Al   (10.01.12)
GET = Get the hell out of my life. Dude after you are done you will feel a hell of lot better. Its time to divest and diversify...

While I realize that you and I live on the same planet, all similarities stop there. Do you really think people take you seriously when you spout such fundamentalist nonsense based on a 3-4000 year old fairy tale? What does anyone know about anyone's eternal soul, if there is such a thing? Nothing at all. You can hope. I prefer to live in the real world. To all who think they need gets: Life is too short to get hung up on petty details. Forget the get and get on with life. It's only a piece of paper, an anachronism.
9. Remarkable Contradiction
ZT ,   Rochester, NY, USA   (10.02.12)
It's amazing that a Rabbi can call this "abusing a Jewish women" but still refuse to consider her marriage "Jewish" if she doesn't get a Get. If this is abuse, then the law is abusive. If abuse is wrong, so is the law. Why support or enforce an abusive law? Just marry her already. This is the 21st century. Halachah has found loopholes before when necessary; surely it's doable now.

11. 8 Iselin, Oslo, Norway: What a sad post you made.
Rivkah   (10.02.12)
How very sad for you to have no clue on what the Creator wants of His people. God's people are not called to be happy. They are called to be holy. The Scriptures tells you what holiness is which is separation from the world in many ways. Oh, how sad your post is for you to have so little knowledge of The Scriptures. King Solomon said in the last chapter of Ecclesiastes after considering life empty except for this one thing: to know and to do God's will and Commandments. What kind of awful parents did you have who did not raise you to know The Scriptures and to love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul and to seek His knowledge daily in feeding the Scriptures to your soul in daily reading and studying? Your parents failed in their primary duty as parents: to lead their children to the Lord. Oh, how heartbreaking for you to be so blind to spiritual truths.
12. you are wasting your time with me
#11 ,   Oslo, Norway   (10.02.12)
Maybe we do live on different planets after all. I live my life on this good earth and that is all that I have. I as admirably as I can, because this is my only chance to do what is right, because this is the only life I will ever have. Pure realism and pragmatism. No silly spiritual fluff. I couldn't care less about 3-4000 year old scrolls or tablets or whatever. Whatever happened back then is of no interest to me and many others. Why are you so hung up on what happened so long ago? And why do you use those texts as a lifestyle guide? Those people that you regard as experts thought that the world was flat, among other things. Not very convincing. FYI: My parents sent me to Sunday school, so I learned enough about scriptures to know that they were just a bunch of fairy tales with some historical basis.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have heard everything. I wonder if Rivkah has any idea what this woman has been through. Maybe her husband beats her. Maybe he is the one who has been having sex with other women. In any case this kind of Judaism is too much like Islamic extremism !
15. No 14 This is not JUdaism it's a fanatic
Ari ,   Jerusalem   (10.03.12)
way of viewing judaism. Real Judaism accepts Divorce and rejects the Agunoth stuff. In earlier time soldiers who went to war left a signed divorce in case the fell in battle. The divorce did not go through immediately so as to make sure the husband really die. The idea was not to leave women as agunoth (abandoned)
16. England
Joseph ,   London UK   (10.03.12)
Here in London we have a Jakobovits rule which says a civil divorce cannot be granted unless both parties are 100% free to marry someone else. This means if one party refuses to give or receive a 'Get' they cannot receive a civil divorce. Perhaps such a rule could help in the USA.
17. People, Relax. Rivka is off her Meds again.
Israelit ,   Israel   (10.03.12)
She's hearing voices and believes she has a direct line to heaven. Poor thing will be okay once the nice men in the white jackets come to take her to the lovely hotel with the cushy walls.
18. #1, rivkah the shikse
shloime ,   toronto, canada   (10.03.12)
rivka is at it again, telling us how christians "do jewish". trouble is, christian theology has absolutely nothing to do with jewish halakha, and she doesn't have a clue. no matter how convinced she is that she can make halakhic pronouncements without any knowledge of torah she'beal peh.
19. "pending custody dispute"?
shloime ,   toronto, canada   (10.03.12)
having heard only one side of the story, it's dangerous to judge such cases. two years after their civil divorce there's still a "pending custody dispute"? two years is a long time in the life of a child. wouldn't this "advocacy group" be doing the woman a greater favour if they helped resolve the custody issue, first?
20. To Rivkah #11#
Ruben Jacobi ,   U.K   (10.03.12)
How about being Whooly and happy, I think you must have had a pious upbringing, with not much fun.
21. #1 Rivkeleh mine dahling
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.03.12)
it's only adultery if you only have one piece of side action. Multiple ones, put you in the "hero" category, such as David & Shlomo. Moses was a virtual saint: he only married shiksot. And God apparently approved: when Miriam hassled Moshe about the Etiopit wife, God struck her down with leprosy. So watch what you say, Rivkeleh.
22. #1, #11: Rivkah, please respond
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.03.12)
It makes no sense that no one considers changing a custom or practice that in today's modern world would be considered ridiculous on the face of it. It's time to get rid of the concept of "get." Let's assume the Torah or Talmud condoned slavery. Rivkah, would you support slavery? Please respond to his question.
23. 20 Ruben Jacobi, U.K.: Entertainments are activities that
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
lead a person away from HaShem. Re-creations are activities that lead a person toward HaShem and re-create the physical, mental, spiritual, and moral aspects of a person's character. Joy is different from happiness. There is joy in HaShem, the author of joy and creation. HaShem's people are not called to be happy but to be holy. The joy in life is in the Word of HaShem, The Scriptures and in the shalom peace that surpasses understanding that is from HaShem. Sometimes, happy comes with holy but not always. So when the choice is to be happy or holy, those in HaShem's camp should choose holy.
24. 21 Bluegrass Picker, Afula: Moses married the daughter of
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
Jethro who was a Midianite (Saudi Arabian) and he also married a Cushite King's daughter according to the historian Josephus. Moses was the leader of Pharoah's army in a war with Cush. He devised the plan of bringing storks to eat the rattlesnakes that surrounded the Cushite city so t he city could be attacked . The Cushite Princess sent word to Moses that she would deliver the city into his hands if he married her after that, so that is what happened. Since Moses was raised in Pharoah's court, it is natural that he would marry goyim just as Joseph the Patriarch did. King David commited adultery ONCE and repented after the death of Uriah. He married and provided for Bathsheva and the children that were born to her. Shlomo did not commit adultery to my knowledge since he had many wives and concubines. His sin was spiritual idolatry and letting the daughter of Egypt's Pharoah worship Ashtoreth in Israel. But in Ecclesiastes, the last chapter, Solomon comes to the conclusion that the whole purpose of being alive is to obey HaShem. What is adultery? Many marriages are adulterous because one of the partners was not free to marry from HaShem's perspective. Only if HaShem considers people to be married lawfully in Him is a marriage not adulterous.
25. 18 Shloime, Toronto, Canada: Messianics keep the Shabbat
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
of the Lord unlike most Christians who keep the sabbath of man. Messianics understand the importance of the everlasting laws of God and the Shabbat of the Lord unlike many Christians who think the law passed away for them and they can be hearers and not doers of the Law. Yeshua of Nazareth said those who love Him would obey His commandments. The Ten Commandments show how to love the Lord and to love people. To love the Lord with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is to obey the Ten Commandments and the everlasting commandments which are so designated in The Scriptures which did not pass away. The Talmud consists of commandments of men not commandments of HaShem. Yeshua of Nazareth did not obey the Talmud, but he did obey the Torah and Tanakh.
26. 14 Stan, Israel: Orthodox Judaism and Islamic extremism
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
are similar in some ways because they have a common origin: the Patriarch Abraham. But Islam diverted from the faith of Abraham to worship a moon-god Allah and his prophet Mohammed. But the importance of holiness and chastity of women and men is a common theme in both religions.
27. 14 Stan, Israel: HaShem respects Judaism the most, Islam
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
after that, and lastly, Christianity, based on the percentage of people in each religion who HaShem reveals Himself to. According to ELS Torah code matrices on XTNS, JEWS, and MUSLIMS, 50% of Jews are saved eternally (know HaShem and the Messiah Yeshua), 25% of Muslims are saved eternally, but only 7 % of XTNS are saved eternally. Why does HaShem respect Orthodox Jews and Muslims more than Christians? Orthodox Jews and Muslims are more likely to obey the moral laws of HaShem although they depart from the faith in other ways. It is not enough to hear and read The Scriptures. Obeying is critical, too.
28. 21 Bluegrass Picker, Afula: It is unlikely that Solomon
Rivkah   (10.04.12)
married divorced women or non-virgins. He married a concubine of King David's named Abishag but she was a virgin since King David when she comforted him was past being able to have sexual intercourse. The women King Solomon took as wives and concubines were free to marry or enter a half-marriage with Solomon from HaShem's perspective. All were provided for as were the children. Solomon was not an adulterer in my opinion, but he was an idolator for a season but turned back to HaShem according to Ecclesiastes in the last chapter of that book.
