1. Better relations with Baku than Washington
Israeli Texan   (09.30.12)
2. It would be mutually beneficial
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.30.12)
Israel needs bases from which to attack Iran -- much less of a logistical dilemma. Azerbaijan can get a great deal in return from Israel. And, let us not forget a large Azeri population in Iran that is cruelly persecuted by the current Islamofascist regime. The Azeri are a Turkic people, with some slender roots in the Caucasus. Should be interesting.
3. Being shia can the Azeris be trusted ?.
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (09.30.12)
4. You must be kidding!
Avi ,   NYC, US   (09.30.12)
The abilities of the IDF soldiers keep deteriorating as the ethnic composition of the Israeli society changes from European origin majority to a Sephardic majority. Israel cannot take on a foe as strong as Iran.
5. You Think The Russians Are Going ......
World Citizen ,   the world   (09.30.12)
To Let Israel Play In Their Back Yard? The Russians are looking for an excuse to bring Azerbaijan back under their zone of control. This would be the kind of move that would make it happen. And if the Russians didn't get Aliyev the Islamic fundamentalists would. Remember Anwar Sadat? If I were an Israeli pilot flying in that part of the world I'd be watching my back.
6. Say thank you to FM Lieberman!
Walt ,   Georgia, U.S. A.   (09.30.12)
It's amazing to see how a guy liberal Israelis hates most is going to be the guy who saves their ***. He can broker the deal with Aliev who is, like himself, fluent in Russian and understand the mentality.
7. @avi
Extremely offencive   (09.30.12)
I find your comments extremely offencive and does nothing to help create Jewish unity. Many Sephardim/mizrachim have contributed greatly to the state including through the idf
8. Frankly, an approach that sounds shaky as Hell.
Cameron ,   USA   (09.30.12)
Potential Israeli operations dependent upon the goodwill & cooperation of a Muslim state? Hmmmm You've tried this approach of catering and pandering to Muslim states such as Egypt & Turkey in the past, and note what kind of return it got you. Staking a great deal on a true roll of the dice.
9. To: No. 8
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.30.12)
Ah, but you have forgotten (or didn't know) that Azerbaijan is a Moslem-dominated country that floats on oil. That hasn't escaped the notice of Iran, whose oil reserves are finite, or the Russians, whose oil supplies are trapped under the Siberian permafrost. Curiously, the Soviets -- and the Russians -- have never quite managed to make drill bits that can penetrate the permafrost. Only two countries have that technology. The United States is one. Israel is the other. In fact, Israel is the one that GAVE it to the United States. You would do well to keep that in mind. Does it come as a great shock to you that Russia is the single greatest importer of oil on the planet? Despite their vast reserves? Closely followed by China, at No. 2. Tee hee. Won't it be fun watching all this unfold? Well, well, well. All of a sudden, Israel is looking extremely valuable. Who'd have thought?
10. #4- Avi, Obtuse as a rock
Daniel   (09.30.12)
You sharted "Israel cannot take on a foe as strong as Iran" Iranians are NOT of European origin... I guess your entire line of logic- if you have one, is impacted by too much gefilte...You're a vile moron.
11. The article
Steve ,   USA   (09.30.12)
The slant of the article is typical of the world press sentiment towards Israel or of the idea of Israel actually protecting itself. It is not even a hidden agenda. The Obama loving world press makes no bones about it's attitude that Israel would have the audacity to protect itself at the expense of an Obama re-election. Such statements are typical... "Israel's "go-it-alone" option to attack Iran's nuclear sites has set the Middle East on edge and unsettled its main ally at the height of a US presidential election campaign. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu exudes impatience, saying Tehran is barely a year from a "red line" for atomic capacity. Many fellow Israelis, however, fear a unilateral strike, lacking US forces, would fail against such a large and distant enemy." Where do they come up with these 'facts'? I wonder what they will say if Obama is re-elected and does nothing to stop Iran?
12. HOW VALUABLE YOUR DREAMS ARE....#9
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (09.30.12)

So the idea of an Earthquake inducing ray gun is definitely off the table then? Just another crazy woman from Brooklyn Heights.
17. Israel's real value to the Islamic lands, Sarah?
Cameron ,   USA   (09.30.12)
Again, you've played this game in the past, and like before, you'll find Israel used & dropped at the curb. Foolish ye are if you ever think Israel will ever find trustworthy friends or allies in that part of the world. At the moment, you're down to Greeks in Cyprus, and that is a pretty sad arranging of affairs all by itself.
18. Compensation,
Zivron   (10.01.12)
The Russian Slavic and Jewish people have be compensated for iranian support of nazism in ww2 so dangerous Russia and England had to invade .

Please make my day & my month by bashing the living daylights out of the troll @ # 15 & 16. Waiting for your answers. Hag Sameach to you & yours.
20. Azeris is a very proud and nationalistic people.
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (10.01.12)
It was a scandal, when an azeri murder, who killed an armenian, was freed from hungarian prison. Armenia broke diplomatic relations with Hungary about a month ago. How can they tolerate then the iranian occupation of South Azerbaijan, with 15 million azeris ?
21. wonder how
wonder how ,   wonder why   (10.01.12)
i wonder how ordinary azeris would react to this development, if they would read all those anti muslim comments (cancer, pedo faith, mental illness...) would they still believe in this alliance? the anti-african racist attacks in the last months cost alot sympathy for israel in africa...
22. # 4 Avi
Madeleine ,   Israel   (10.01.12)
And you maintain this - insulting to any Sephardi soldier - based on what, exactly? Ah, I guess you read something somewhere while sitting in your very safe New York home.
23. #12 mahmood
Madeleine ,   Israel   (10.01.12)
I think you should put your time and energies into trying to force sharia law on Britain. You're not wanted there and yor opinions count for less than zero here.
24. Azer
sam ,   usa   (10.01.12)
Aliyev is barely in control ,under the surface the Islamist are working to topple his pro west approach, only his doll outs to the clans keep him in power Israel is smart enough to trust anyone like Haidar.
