1. This says more about the Greeks than about Merkel.
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (10.09.12)
Germany and the rest of northern Europe has done everything and more to help Greece. Not only through loans and credits; Greece has actually ever since it joined the EU been the #1 recipient of direct EU sudsidies, i.e. money that doesn't have to be paid back. People of Greece, this is your mess created by yourselves! Stop complaining and take some damn responsibility for your country. Grow up!!
2. Greece making friends
steve from raleigh   (10.09.12)
The EU should let Greece implode. It's a small country with a small economy and if the fat smug anarchists who live there want to be bums, let them.
3. Merkel out??? But she would be welcomed if
Harry Wright ,   UK   (10.09.12)
she brought hand-out gifts. That's the entitlement mindset of socialism - the state will supply all your needs. But hey, when the money dries up, that is good cause to protest and riot. Sorry, but the nanny state has a short shelf life. The expiration date of the Greek nanny state has arrived. Time to throw away the product and try another.
4. Unconscionable
Dan ,   Florida - Tel Aviv   (10.09.12)
The highly productive Germans are trying their best to hold the European Union together against lazy overspending peoples that just want the good life and are not willing to work for it.
5. No more bailouts? I demand more bailouts!!!
Chaim ,   Israel   (10.09.12)
Nobody is more self righteous than socialist demanding yet another bailout. First, socialists spend themselves into absolute bankrupcy. Than they demand industrious, hard working people bail them out again and again...They'd rather do anything than act like responsible adults.
6. Typical European Utopianism
Tom W ,   USA   (10.09.12)
1. First was the Bolshevik revolution attempting to transform the Humanity into a "Unified Proletarian World". The "Man (homo sapiens)" also need to be re-engineered in order to be a "New Soviet Man". So the Gulag had to be invented. It ended badly. 2. Next came the crazy "1000 years Reich" with the "pure Aryan blood" mania along with new societal re-engineering plans. It ended in catastrophe with millions of death and ruin. 3. Now we're witnessing the third manifestation of the convoluted European great design, that is the birth of the "Homo Europeous" (?) project. If we blend - under duress! - incongruous, incompatible nations, people with different level of economic and societal development, culture, work ethic etc. - then we are going to usher in the New Golden Age of Europa. The outline of next tragedy is already visible: many nations are sinking into poverty, societal turmoil and utmost despair. The message is clear: no artificial, forced - (how many times people voted down the EU?) - unification will last long. There are neither saints nor evils in the present conundrum: the original idea was dumb.
7. #6, Tom W. Greece doesn't equal Europe
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (10.09.12)
Tom, please don't generalize too much. Just because the Greeks are the way they are and because history looks the way it does (slavery, Vietnam war etc doesn't exactly paint a too proud picture of US history either), it is not fair to brand an entire continent and its people. For instance, I would never dream of saying that the teethless, illitterate rednecks from the hills of Kentucky represent ALL of America.
8. Greece wsa better in the Ancient days
David ,   USA   (10.09.12)
I am sure Aristotle and Plato would be spinning in their graves to see what a joke modern day Greece has become. A bankrupt, welfare state with no future and lazy, spoiled ciitizens. I am in America and we are following the same path as Greece, Spain, Italy and France. If you think the Greek riots are bad then check out the America riots next decade.
9. Instead labelling
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (10.09.12)
I suggest the greeks to cut the number of 800000 state beurocrats with 3000€ salary. Also useful would be to limit siesta hours on colder days.
10. #7. Gunnar: I am E. European
Tom W ,   USA   (10.09.12)
In spite of my current location in the U.S. I was born in E. Europe and I DID witness (and survived) both craze - the Red and the Brown ones - so I wrote my own life-experiences in the EU. Your bringing up the U.S. "rednecks" in connection with Greece is a far fetch red herring.
11. #7 gunnar
DavidR ,   USA   (10.09.12)
Why do you suppose the US chose to place all their national treasure in the State of Kentucky at Fort Knox? Because those toothless, redneck, hillbillies with their long rifles and big muscles from doing hard work for a living make the very best fighting men in the world. I would suggest that Sweden treats them with respect because they have a way about them when it comes to pay back.
12. Europe will implode taking its Jews down with her..
Al   (10.09.12)
More signs that Jews in Europe are on borrowed time. The German Jewish community is an artificial farce, sustained by government welfare. The truth is no right minded Jew with a scintilla of a brain would ever live in a Germany. As to the Jews in France, they are a very sad joke..clinging on in the vain hope that the host government will support them. Jewish life in Europe is dead and gone. There is simply no future for them there.
13. #11 - Isn't Fort Knox in Tennessee?
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (10.09.12)
It was in the famous James Bond movie "Goldfinger" at least.
14. Lives are in hell because of corruption only
mea   (10.09.12)
The average Greek retires at 55 with 80% income. Give me a break--now they're paying the fiddler. Sorry but the rest of the world must work, and so to must the Greeks. Blaming Germany because you couldn't find a formula to balance the unbalanceable spread sheets is the only thing to fault here. Germany is the healthiest economy in the world as it stands alone. If Greece wants to remain in the EU, they must follow Ireland with severe austerity measures.
15. That potential scenario weighs on many of us, #8
Cameron ,   USA   (10.09.12)
Running Obama down the road is critical in avoiding the final penalty for the self-indulgent entitlement state. We do indeed see Greece for the dire red flag it is.
16. #7.Gunnar: Greece is not "true" Europe?
Tom W ,   USA   (10.09.12)
Amazing to read from an European that Greece - the very cradle of the Pan-European civilization - is somehow not "real" Europe. While the contemporary Italians are not the direct descendants of ancient Romans, the Greeks did not come from Archimedes either, yet these two are the pillars of the Western Civilization. And both are in trouble. The "lowly" Greeks invented Logics, Philosophy, Math, Arts, Theaters and the 9 Muses. To berate all this by a nobody Swede is a sad self portrait of the EU. Just compare Sweden's history to that of Greece and the Byzantium later. Nothing to do with the American "rednecks" whom are grating your nerves for no reason in this case.
17. To #12
EFRAIM ,   Virginia   (10.09.12)
1) European jews would never vote for an Obama/Antisemite. European jews would fight for Israel at a moments notice. 2) American leftist jews adore Obama inspite of him showing hate towards Israel. They will vote him again. 3) Which ones are artificial as you say??
18. Angela Merkel out,A Merkel's money in
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (10.09.12)
Does Angela Merkel owe anything to the lazy greeks ?.
19. 10% of them vote for the Greek Nazi party Golden Dawn anyhow
ab   (10.09.12)
20. #16, Tom...who brought up history anyway?
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (10.10.12)
I certainly didn't, whereas you couldn't stop going on and on and on about communists, gulags, nazis and whatnot. All I said was that TODAY'S GREECE is in a terrible mess and that there is something rotten in today's Greek society. Read more thoroughly, please. Or perhaps you aren't interested in discussing the actual issue, but rather wanna make sure you're the 1 screaming the loudest.
21. #20 Gunnar: read your own post
Tom W ,   USA   (10.10.12)
1. Greece does not equal Europe...really? Does Sweden equal Europe? 2. Toothless American rednecks...? Yes, modern Europe equals Bolshevism, Nazism, Gulag and Auschwitz. From 1917. onward until 1945. Dare to deny it? My point was and is that there are neither saints nor villains in the present conundrum. The strong economies forced the Euro upon the weaker nations to sell their wares at a higher profit. Germany and others profited handsomely while others - not only the Greeks! - went broke. Nations that swallowed the hook with the Euro as a lure now paying the price: other non-Euro nations are better off. (Norway, Czech Rep.) We are only one step short of calling the Greeks as "Untermensch" because they don't have the same "Ordnung muss sein" mentality than the Nordic nations have. The irrresponsible parties were those who mindlessly joined to the "Utopian United States of Europe" fever without thinking. Everybody is right: Germany should be Germany and let the Greeks be Greeks and not Swedes.
22. To nr 7 Gunnar
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (10.10.12)
Artifical, unnatural things are always dangerous. Such an invention is the EU, which has many pluses and many minuses in the member nations. The problem is that in certain countries are significant +s, and in others great - s's. Hungary sorry to say belongs to the second cathegory.
23. #6 You are entitled to your opinion but....
Robert ,   Australia   (10.10.12)
....the US has caused the deaths of millions of innocent men, women and children in the modern era, an era when it should have known better. Your pontificating is hypocritical. I think you would find the US is at the brink of an abyss if it's not already over the edge.
24. #23. The Red Herring Rule
Tom W ,   USA   (10.10.12)
For the hard left the subject of the current discussion is irrelevant. They will turn everything into USA and Jew bashing autodafe: be it the EU, Greece or anything, the mantra of the Two Satans instantly comes to afore. What do "toothless American rednecks" has got to do with Greece? Or with the USA? Nothing at all. It's a ridiculous leftist obsession.
