1. The study of a few secular subjects is
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.14.12)
insufficient to provide Israel with the broad range of talent it will need to defend itself militarily and economically in the future. Haredi students need to be educated like students in other advanced societies. This will require a Hugh change in the attitudes of the haredi rabies, who view advanced education of both men a women a challenge to their way of life and personal power.
2. a wise move
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (10.14.12)
this will bring more harmony to Israel, more prosperity, and will lead to greater academic levels. Good thinking to the Israeli government!
3. This is an important move towards ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.14.12)
the "Golden Middleway"
4. Single sex
Joseph ,   London UK   (10.14.12)
What seems so strange to me is that when I went to university in the States all the top places were single sex -- Harveard, Princeton, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Vasser, Wellesley, Goucher. When the question of admitting girls to the undergraduate school was first raised, about 80% of us boys voted against it -- and we were not Haredim. When I arrived in England to teach, most of the top schools were also single sex -- Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Westminster, Haberdashers, City of London. During the last thousand years many schools and colleges have been co-ed for less than 75 years.
5. #4: not the same.
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.14.12)
These single gender schools are not in societies where women are marginalized. The more haredi women are educated, the more they will not tolerate being marginalized - a good thing for Israel.
6. #4: Nu, Jews were excluded as well

7. single sex
ma nishma ,   modiin   (10.15.12)
a point well taken. we have forgotten a bit on the history of education. in the old days, the best schools were for men only and the students excelled. unfortunately, many who go to mixed schools end up having great times and often at the expense of the purpose that they supposedly go to school for. it will be interesting to see what the scholastic rating will show in the future of sex segregated schools vrs integrated.
8. I don't want to be mixed up with those aliens
Angry scholar ,   Israel   (10.15.12)
Leave my university a free and modern place.
9. 12 new haredi battalions would sound more good!
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (10.15.12)
:)
10. Curriculum?
Mark ,   NYC, USA   (10.16.12)
What is the content of the courses at a Haredi university? Are western literature, science, social sciences and art going to taught? If they are going to really be technical colleges that teach useful skills and nothing else. Teaching technical skills is a very good thing but technical schools are not universities.
11. Mazal Tov ! "It's time to go together..."
Samy ,   Paris, France   (10.16.12)
"It's time to go together... La la la" Thorah and Science what a sweet magic potion to make our enemies afraid of us... Thousand of kisses ;-) God and Tsahal protect you
12. The orthoquack are denying their own children the means
Al   (10.16.12)
to sustain themsleves. I cant think of anything more criminal than a parent refusing to provide his own child the means to sustain themselves. I dont know what religion these people follow. It is certainly not the Judaism I was taught as a child. I will never ever donate a single penny to them and their causes. They are not Jews, for Jews always ensured that their children were able to provide for themselves.
13. Good News? For Whom?
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (10.16.12)
As the mother of college aged kids who did the army , I am absolutely appalled. My son and daughters did stint in the army and then had to fight to get a place in a university. And as for tuition, their army money goes only so far. As middle class parents who pay taxes we aren't entitled to any aid. But as is always, our taxes will now subsidize higher education for the Haredi leeches. Of couse they'll be special programs for them and scholarships.
14. Al, Don t believe everything...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.16.12)
Haredi people are allowed to use smartphones for professional reasons. I know some who use them .
15. Number 13. Does it say that?
Danny ,   London England   (10.17.12)
Does the govt say they will not pay fees or that they will not do national service? From the limited information in the article I can't tell. If they do join the labour foce they will of course pay taxes and contribute to the economy. Some countries have a student loan system.
16. 15 The View From Here
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (10.18.12)
I live here and I work in a college. I know how it goes. These campuses aren't for the ordinary religious population they are for the Hareddi fanatics. The people who send women to the back of the bus. The people who do not do national service and who don't pay taxes. They will always find a way not to pay taxes of contribute to the economy. And their kids will get degrees while our kids support them with taxes.
