1. What a waste!
Keren ,   IL-BR   (10.15.12)
Please, those politically correct and who do not want to face facts, let me alone on what I have to say! And what I have to say is that this article shows the waste that has been done with these precious Jewish minds."Yidishe cops"if some prefer. Education in Israel MUST include Jewish studies.Torah studies. Ok,that´s ok to keep secular studies, but it is a sin not to let these yougsters be in contact with their own heritage more deeply, which will be only a reminder for them, because once in contact with their heritage -just a little ignited spark -they will turn into oceans of beauty and brilliance.Intelectual and spiritual beauty and brilliance. Take out these children from cultural BS . NOW!
2. Not surprising

I am a retired American teacher who volunteers in an Israeli school. I have worked in some of the worst slum schools and always managed to get my students to both respond to and respect me. I am shocked and horrified at what goes on in the building. Considered a "good" school this elementary school is being run by the students, not the adults. Children at all times are skipping classes and no one says anything. I was assigned to work in an "empty" classroom tutoring a few students. I had to chase the cutting students out, While most went easily, others left as a result of my very experienced, "teacher look" But they left, they allowed a volunteer, with no authority to "chase" them out. When I commented back to the English teacher ( from whose class my tutorees came) about these students--who belonged in HER English class, the comment back was, "this is the middle East, they do what they want" I clenched my mouth shut because I have never in all my years working heard such an explanation given so freely. Where are the supervisors of teachers who would say such to a volunteer tutor. Where is the concern of the teacher for her student's education. I am the first to say you can't blame all the faults of failing children on the school--but then again, maybe sometimes, in some schools--you can!
3. What happens when you let the lunatics

rule the asylum. The Haredi are the biggest existential threat to Israel. Opting out of learning should not be allowed to be an option. Every child in Israel should be expected to complete a national curriculum in which Maths and Science are taught. Israel cannot afford to have a section of society that destroys smartphones on the instructions of a religious nutter who fears a reduction in the power he holds rather than his followers being in touch with the real world.
4. Not surprising
Taxpayer ,   Hod- Hasharon   (10.15.12)
When the Ministry of Education gives a message that the end of year prom is more important than school books then the rest is hardly surprising. I am not sure what Keren's point is = we should pray for things to get better. Rather than putting efforts into forcing religion onto secular kids the effort should be forcing a proper education onto the Haredi kids who are left at present uneducated to function in the world.

Add all those black dressed Tora freaks in your statistics and than show us the numbers ,...
6. Please read....
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.15.12)
...the book "Fooled by Randomness" before jumping to any conclusions. Executive summary: Test scores, and life in general, bobble around in a random way no matter who does what. Human beings love to believe that "agency" and "causation" rule the universe. Mostly.... they don't.
7. Well you reap what you sow

At least they got to see Hebron and they know how to sing Israel's hymn
8. Number 5 'black dressed Torah freaks'
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.15.12)
Judging by our Haredi schools in the Diaspora, our girls do as well as any other girls up to the age of 18 and our boys do as well as any boys up to age 13, when the quantity of Haredi secular education often goes down. I've taught in Haredi, mainstream Jewish and Church of England schools over the past 40 years. I'd rather teach 'Torah freaks' than 'Torah illiterates'.
9. #8: The real issue is the lack

of education of both haredi boys and girls. Because they will simply be such a large segment of Israel's population in the future, the current practice of not educating haredi children in math, science, engineering etc. seriously threatens Israel's ability to defend itself militarily and economically. This of course, threatens the haredi rabbi's power and influence over this segment of the population. The more education haredi children receive, the more they will realize there is a large, interesting world out there, filled with possibilities. These children will grow into adults who will be able to use their own critical judgment and common sense, rather than follow the dictates of some rabbi who is accountable to no one. This is imperative for Israel to survive in the future.
10. #5 Split, you have a fixation with black
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (10.15.12)
Tell your priests, nuns & ministers they must stop wearng black Wjy should anyone tell you anything, not matter what it may be, you'll be negative
11. I am not saying that Religious in Israel are super educated
Keren ,   IL-BR   (10.15.12)
I have seen a lot of misbehavior among them. They must learn to practice the Torah they study, and classes that teach ethic practice should be included in Israel´s curriculum.
12. The essence of this so called report is Anti Semitic...
