1. "Saving the Jewish people?"
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.19.12)
" During a special conference ...aimed at "saving the Jewish people from the harms of technology," the rabbis...determined that "women's workplaces should also be properly blocked, and we must watch out." Saving the Jewish people? Who will save the Jewish people from the haredi cult, who is dictating to the observant and non-observant how to live their lives.
2. Curious what are "women's workplaces"?
Carl ,   USA   (10.19.12)
Ironically, these rabbis seem to overlook that it is the Jews of Israel who have created much of the technology that they rail against. I think it is high time they develop a partnership with the Saudi Religious Police to establish joint standards for "bravely defending the sanctity" and avoiding all this "terrible damage" from "life-threatening" devices that did not exist millenia ago. We can all march lockstep back to the 1st century. Progress is for losers and infidels, not such enlightened souls as these 100 rabbis and their Wahabi counterparts.
3. Orthodoxy survived due to oppression, censorship, hate,

isolation, stupidity, banning of innovation, prohibition of change. The rabbi is committed to his goal of keeping Israel retarded.
4. How to defend the faith
Scarborough1414 ,   Scarborough, Ont. CA   (10.20.12)
1. Ban all modern technology. 2. Watch all female family members like a hawk. 3. Punish all transgressors severely. 4. Long term: Exile all less-observant Jews permanently. 5. Control education to ensure conformity. (I'm being a bit facetious. But don't kid yourself, the ultra-orthodox buy into most of what is listed above. Any soft-hearted souls among them will be silenced, one way or another).
5. Internationalism
Zivron   (10.20.12)
Human is Herdal and Tribal with some Internationalist traits.Really Africa is full of Primitive corrupt States with isolated pockets of decency the rest of the world those with low murder and crime rates and less income disparities are few maybe twenty.
6. oh please, say it aint so

Women looking at porn, what a joke.

survival of Israel. Unless many things change, the relatively higher growth rate of the haredi segment of the population will hurt Israel. The country needs the Haredim to educate their children so they can successfully contribute to a modern technological society, and work to support themselves. Unless this happens, in the future, Israel may not be able to defend itself militiarly or economically.
9. Everyone, male and female
Danny ,   London England   (10.20.12)
The rallies around the Haredi world have focused on filtering the Internet to avoid children being exposed to immorality and porn. Films are rated 'X' etc. to warn parents, but the Internet has no oversight and porn is accessed easily, which is damaging to children, men and women. Remember, the right wing of Orthodoxy do not have even t.v. in their homes, to limit slightly the secular influence. Unfiltered Internet -- and let's face it if we Haredim did not have Internet there would be no rallies against it -- is much worse than t.v. where there is some oversight.
10. Reply to 2, 3 et.co.
Danny ,   London England   (10.20.12)
Any reasonable parent or teacher knows that unfiltered access to Internet can cause problems. Rabbi Steinman and others are saying Haredim should add filters to their Internet to avoid accessing immorality. People who would not bring porn magazines or films into their homes also should not give easy access to porn on their Internet. If Haredim did not routinely use Internet there would be no need for such guidelines.
11. Orthodoxy. Michael in California
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.20.12)
In England and France about 80% of afilliated Jews are at least nominally Orthodox -- with no signs of oppression, censorship, hate, isolation, stupidity, banning of innovation or prohibition of change. Our Orthodox schools are consistently rated among the top by Govt inspectors and league table results.
12. 8 Orthodoxy is Israel s root.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.21.12)
A plant without root can t last a long time. The pioneers that built Israel were children from orthodox parents. The wheel keeps turning. Children from secular parents become Baalei Teshuva, and the opposite is also true. The ideal situation would be that all Israelis learn Tora and Science. Some steps have already be done in this direction.
13. Ah, there is a group more conservative than the Haredim...
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.21.12)
If you step back for a moment and look at Jewish religious practice along a continuum, it runs from the "Taliban women" through the Haredim, modern orthodox, conservative and all the way to reform. Members who follow each, claim they are right and the true believers. Who is to say? We might disagree with the way one practices their Judaism, but we need to respect their right to practice they way they want, as long as their practice does not violate civil law or interfere with the way others choose to practice their religion. The Haredim need to be more tolerant of the Taliban women and those who practice modern orthodox, conservative and Reform Judaism.

Members who follow each, claim they are right and the true believers. Who is to say? We might disagree with the way one practices their Judaism, but we need to respect their right to practice they way they want, as long as their practice does not violate civil law or interfere with the way others choose to practice their religion, impose their practices and customs on others, or harm the country, such as purposely living in poverty and taking welfare from the government. The Haredim need to be more tolerant of the Taliban women and those who practice modern orthodox, conservative and Reform Judaism.
