1. They are NOT Haredim!
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.21.12)
Genuine haredim follow the guidance of various recognised haredi Rabbonim such as Rav Elyashiv ztl, Rav Auerbach, Rav Kalelitz, Rav Ovadia or one of the recognised Hasidic Rebbes such as Gur or Visnitz. These Taliban women act outside halacha and are just eccentric, but not Haredi.
2. Ultra-non-Orthodox
Danny ,   London England   (10.21.12)
Every respected Haredi Rav has condemned these strange women who have departed from Torah and Halacha and created their alternative religion. The Halachic guidelines for modesty are that men and women should not crossdress nor dress in a manner that would look provacative such as a woman in a short skirt or clinging blouse. Looking like a Martian with a pipe and a black sack over you has nothing to do with Halacha. Please don't insult Haredim!
3. Wedding dress? Rabbi?
Akiva ,   NYC   (10.21.12)
Black is the new black in frum circles, but not the sort of black outfit the Taliban women wear. What will she wear to her wedding? A pipe and a black sack? As all recognised Rabbonim have condemned the Taliban women as acting outside the Halacha, who will perform the wedding? Will she uncover her face to drink the wine and for the witnesses to be sure of her identity? Personally I would request a letter from a psychiatrist saying whether she is competent to get married.
4. freedom of religion, freedom to be a nut
ma nishma ,   modiin   (10.21.12)
when does freedom of religion and freedom of expression end and lunacy begins? It is difficult to say, but should a child choose to align with nuts and the courts protect her against the parents? It is very difficult to draw the line, but the shawl women, or taliban ladies (?) as they are alternatively called seem to me to be screw balls. I would hate to see anyone's child fall into their cage.
5. The parents must show lots of love
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.21.12)
to their daughter,so if she is unhappy, she feels okay going back to them.
6. How old is she
David ,   Los Angeles   (10.21.12)
If she is old enough to get married without her parents consent she is not a girl and if she isn't then they should be able to bring her home
7. #4, you state "It is very difficult to draw the line...
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.21.12)
but the shawl women, or taliban ladies (?) as they are alternatively called seem to me to be screw balls. I would hate to see anyone's child fall into their cage." Many non-orthodox would say the same about the Haredim. Before the Haredim criticize others they should look at themselves and see how others see them.
8. Since the girl has dishonored her parents by disobeying
Rivkah   (10.21.12)
their reasonable request for her to return home, I have to wonder if her parents are obligated to help her if she decides she made a mistake and then returns to them. The father of the prodigal son in a Scriptural parable took back the son when he repented and returned to his father's house, but the prodigal son was disinherited by his father since the father told the son who was faithful to the father that all he had was that son's.
9. Clarification
Yankel Emmesser ,   Boro Park Brooklyn   (10.21.12)
This is not a matter of few board women who decided to wear ultra Tzniut clothing, this group of women are following the old Jerusalem dress code of Jewish women. If you look at any pictures at recent as 50 to 60 years ago you'll see for yourself that the Jerusalemites women dressed this way hundreds of years, it’s only when they got pushed out of the old city that they changed their way of dress to blend in with the rest of the world. The ultra Edah Rabbis signed a letter ten years ago begging and blessing all Jewish women who will dress with a Shaul and Vail as the grandmothers did in Jerusalem. So this groups of spiritual women are just following the old traditional Jerusalemites way of dress with the backing of the Rabbis of the Adeah HaCaradiet of Jerusalem and many more. The problem with this is that we have strait from the truth and we have become very modern in a way that we despise the real way a Jewish women should dress, so we poke fun at them & call them names etc. But it’s time to be honest and admire the ultra orthodox way of dress for men and women.
10. to # 2

Peddle your paranoid nonsense elsewhere
11. shame on the court
VK ,   Jerusalem   (10.21.12)
for prohibiting parents from seeing their own child! did they look into this taliban sect? did they make sure those are living according to the laws of a democratic state?
12. Mentally disturbed
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (10.21.12)
This girl is obviously mentally disturbed. A shame that the parents can't find a way to rescue her. I am getting more and more fed up with this expression of 'religiosity.'
13. Jewish souls looking for something
(10.21.12)
Usually they're off to some sect in India. This non-haredi taliban is another choice.
14. young minds brainwashed by the harideem
David ,   Haifa, Israel   (10.21.12)
just another victim and one of many im sure
15. Poor reporting: what's her age?
Dan   (10.22.12)
If she's over a certain age she can make as much of a mess of her life as she likes; otherwise her parents have rights.
16. How do you come up with this stuff?
Daniel ,   USA   (10.22.12)
17. #6 Asked the Key Question
TSB ,   Clifton, NJ USA   (10.22.12)
How old is she? That is a key fact left out of this article. Makes a big difference if she is, say, 14 vs. 19. Either could be described as a "girl." (And the "Taliban women" are not a haredi sect. They are outside the mainstream of almost all Charedim.)
18. @David #14
Mikey ,   SomeWhere OverHere   (10.22.12)
Most other haredim also are very much against this extreme sect. The parents of the young girl are also probably haredim
19. can i join a cult?
Fred ,   NYC   (10.22.12)
I have a desire to wear drag w/ a pink kafia and shout out "ALAHU AKBAR! ALAHU AKBAR!". I just don't know how to do this... I mean, I'm a straight guy, jewish, can't stand radical islam. There must be some cult I can join where I can act out this fetish. Lets organize something!!
20. Ah, there's a group more conservative than the Haredim...
Runner1983 ,   USA   (10.22.12)
If you step back for a moment and look at Jewish religious practice along a continuum, it runs from the "Taliban women" through the Haredim, modern orthodox, conservative and all the way to reform. Members who follow each, claim they are right and the true believers. Who is to say? We might disagree with the way one practices their Judaism, but we need to respect their right to practice they way they want, as long as their practice does not violate civil law or interfere with the way others choose to practice their religion, impose their practices and customs on others, or harm the country, such as purposely living in poverty and taking welfare from the government. The Haredim need to be more tolerant of the Taliban women and those who practice modern orthodox, conservative and Reform Judaism.
21. # 6
Birdi ,   Israel   (10.22.12)
She is most likely over the age of consent which is 18; legally an adult & is responsible for her own decisions. I hope she finds happiness & peace of mind with the choices she has made.
22. #8 - Rivkah
Ariel ,   Modi'in, Israel   (10.22.12)
The prodigal son was not disinherited by the father!! He received his inheritance when he left and went and wasted it all. Therefore all that the father had left, which was probably half of everything he had prior to the prodigal leaving, was the second son's inheritance. Not the first time that you have got the cat by the tail but I couldn't ignore it this time!!
23. #9 Is mistaken and does not clarifiy
Israeli grandma   (10.22.12)
The old photos to which you refer must be seen in the context of the ordinary dress of the period, in which ALL European women were hampered by corsets & very full dresses with many petticoats under the skirts. You can check this with any library book showing everyday dress of the period. Fitted coats were not commonly worn over this voluminous fashion, awkward and hampering shawls were. NO reason for women to revert to this antique dress today!
24. 13 clarification, Jewish souls who..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.22.12)
ignore Tora.
25. Her loving parents' plight is heart breaking.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.22.12)
The parents suffer so much. How can this woman cause it to her parents in the name of religion, any religion?
26. 22 Ariel: The prodigal son was disinherited from what the
Rivkah   (10.22.12)
father had accumulated since he left but he was given an inheritance of what the father had at the time he left that he squandered. Do you think the father 's possessions were stagnant and the sheep and goats and camels stopped giving birth and the fields stopped producing food? There was much that the prodigal son was disinherited from that was accumulated after he left.
27. Israel has a disease
Sagi   (10.23.12)
and the Taliban women are a symptom.
28. Sota factoids
moriah ,   sacramento usa   (10.23.12)
I think it's interesting that during the time of the sota it was believed that white was a becoming color on women. Part of the punishment of the sota was to be dressed in black. Also it states in that the priest of baal wore black.
29. Taliban women
Edouard ,   Montreal Canada   (10.23.12)
Send then to Afghanistan Let this meshuge experience the real Taliban way They will run back and be secular and democrat like any normal humanben
30. Not true, Yankel
Elder ,   USA   (10.23.12)
I've looked through the Matson collection of photos from Jerusalem from 100 years ago. Although their head coverings looked a little like the Muslim hijab today, Jewish religious women never covered their faces.
