1. Better yet: Charge a delivery fee of 15% and give it all to
George ,   Israel   (10.25.12)
the guy who brings you the food..... Sounds very fair.
2. Interesting article, educative.
Ivan ,   Haifa   (10.25.12)
3. What a terrible opinion piece
Jason ,   Israel   (10.25.12)
Ys I know it's only an opinion piece and everyone has a right to a opinion.. Well so do I!! 10% to a delivery guy!! Are you out of your mind... Did this guy set my table... Serve me.. Pour me water.. And bring me each course one at a time and the. Clean up!!!! Sounds like a typical Israeli rioting the article who feels ever hung is coming to them... A tip should be as a general rule 5 NIS... .. When store charges me 8 NIS for delivery I will on principle. It give one dime to delivery boy as I just paid 8nis for the delivery!! If its Hague order etc i will adjust my tip.. I also offer then a drink each time along with a hello how r u... And I don't believe I am the minority I believe I am average.. There are always some rotten fruit.. May e the writer worked in the slums..
4. Tiniest Violin
yeah right ,   tel aviv   (10.25.12)
It's your employer cheating you, not customers. Plenty of delivery men do not expect or customarily get tips - why should restaurants be the exception? The delivery guy with my 20kg bag of dog food goes up 3 flights of stairs rings the bell and leaves before I even get to the door. My guess: he gets a fair salary from his employer.
5. Here's some advise
mea   (10.25.12)
Be an excellent employee for say a couple of months, never missing a call, always being responsible. Then, demand to be paid and when they dare you to quit, walk out. Then watch how they follow you....Great employees are tough to find and you need to call their bluff because they're taking advantage of you. Also, never expect a tip equal to table service, since delivering is not seen as intense. As for the bike without mirrors, when they follow you out to beg you to stay, make it a condition of returning. When I was young, employers loved me because I was on time, worked hard and made them money. I was also realistic about customers and never counted tips as wage because let's face it, you cannot, as you point out. It's a lousy job so maybe you should go get something else.
6. THANK YOU HADAR ,RESPECT
DA RAP ARTISTE ,   SAFED OPERAHOUSE   (10.25.12)
Well Said .Delivery people here deserve to be treated with respect and customers here are often ignorant and very rude.
7. If the point of the article was to show that the
Al   (10.25.12)
average Israeli is an asshole, you didnt have to write an article about it. He bahaves the way he does because he has an inflated sense of entitlement. In time that will dissipate..It may take several generations of want. Hunger and want makes one a mench.
8. 10% tip for service, not delivery
Ted   (10.25.12)
This article is ridiculous. We usually do tip the delivery guys, but not because we have to. Tip is for service. Take-away has no service involved. In fact, for delivery, the customers already paid for additional delivery charge in his bill. Why should the delivery guy expect tip and be grumpy when he does not receive it????? Too bad that this law student has no good logic nor understanding of fairness.
9. #4 You sound like "Mr. Pink" from Reservoir Dogs.
Jake   (10.25.12)

michael Pielet ,   israel   (10.25.12)
Welcome to Israel. Do not be a frier.
11. Funny thing is...
Moshino ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.25.12)
As a customer, I always try and tip average 10 to 20 sheiks for an average take-out meal, but my experience has been that many delivery guys are EXTREMELY rude. I guess it's really a two-way street :)) but YES, neither customers nor delivery guys should be rude. Funny we also need to say that. This is a funny country indeed... :)(
12. #3/8 - Delivery is a service, not a right.
Stan   (10.25.12)
Anyone who's spent anytime in Israel knows that getting around is a pain, and finding where someone lives is even worse. Hauling food to a person too lazy to go to the restaurant is on the level with catering to your every need as a waiter. They both bring the food to you! If you don't want to tip the waiter, stay home and cook. If you don't want to tip the delivery boy, don't order out.
13. #8 is right, delivery is included in price
Israeli grandma   (10.25.12)
You will always meet bad mannered and boorish customers but my long experience in Israel shows that most people are decent. And by the way, my local supermarket charges 25 shekels for delivery, and I live only a short walk away. I certainly dont tip the delivery men, and I dont think they expect it either.
14. "You can always quit."
TC   (10.25.12)
Unfortunately in Israel there are not enough employees who would dare to sue their boss if they display such a beavior. As a consequence, managers are used to this and know there's a good chance they will not be worried.
15. r all of u saying that Delivery isn't a service? r u sure?
(10.25.12)
and also all of you sound very guilty and defensive...well actually you sound like a bunch of overly self centered puffy fools. A suggestion go do this man's job for 3 days and then come back and share your experiences.
16. Cry me a river
Adam ,   Yeruka   (10.25.12)
So Mr. Raz, am I now expected to apologize for ordering food and providing reckless delivery men with jobs? I work in customer service and I bust my arse to keep clients happy so that my sales partner, gets a commission. I don't get a thanks or a pat on the back. IT'S MY JOB! I do my best to have tip available for the person who delivers my food but if you think I am going to give someone a 10% tip for getting on a moped and driving to my house, forget about it! The cost of gas is cheaper! If you don't like your job, quit or complain to your boss but don't expect any of us to cry for you. As a matter of fact, out of principal, if a restaurant charges for delivery, it should be going into your salary, if you don't have the guts to speak up about it, that's your problem. I don't blame my customers or try to make them feel bad that I don't get commission no matter how much work I have to do for them. Israelis need to learn to stop complaining about how bad they have it. Try finding a job in Greece, sunshine.
17. Being rude to delivery boys.
Donald ,   Indy USA   (10.26.12)
I tip delivery boys very well. I thought only the French acted like that. I had no idea Jews were so rude. Being rude is inexcusable and I am ashamed of anyone being rude, especially delivery people. It's already a somewhat degrading job, do people have to make it worse ?? Shame on you, maybe the delivery boys should spit in their food.
18. VERY WELL WRITTEN GOOD ARTICLE
ZIMBI ,   NJUSA   (10.26.12)
19. israelis are (c)rude, period.
european   (10.25.12)
so what's the point of this article. it's not like the "delivery guys" are any more polite/civilized.
20. #8
A Pernat ,   Paris   (10.25.12)
The additional delivery charge is for gas costs and vehicle wear and tear . Either you didnĀ“t read the article or you are an insensible scrooge. The salary is NIS 22.04 an hour for an OECD member the payment is miserable third world.
21. Israelis are the world's biggest cheapskates
Guy ,   KC, USA   (10.26.12)
Every time I visit Israel, I'm amazed by the vast wilderness surrounding apartment buildings because the tenants don't want to spare NIS 25 a month for mowing the lawn or collecting excess garbage. The facades of their homes are so dirty, they look as though they've been shelled by a tank. Israelis complain about the costs of health care, and make ridiculous claims like, "We'd get better treatment in the US," but have no concept of what physicians, hospital systems, and insurers elsewhere charge. So I sympathize with the delivery driver, who risks his life in traffic, given Israelis' third-world driving culture and complete lack of discipline. I feel thankful that I'm not there right now.
22. bad taste
Steve   (10.26.12)
Some of the commenters are beyond cheap.Reminds me of an old joke... What is the difference between a Jew and a canoe? A canoe tips. (It's O.K., I'm Jewish)
23. This news is not news.
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (10.26.12)
Everywhere on the globe the same method with pizza delivers, from Gronland to Burkina Fasso.
24. Most places charge for delivery
Gdub   (10.26.12)
If a restaurant automatically charges me for service I don't add an additional tip. Likewise most delivery places in Israel charge extra for delivery so why am I supposed to pay twice? In the US where they don't charge extra but the delivery guy works for tips then it is a different story.
25. Jews aren't rude, israelis are.
Dan ,   Mexico   (10.26.12)
26. Israel is a third world country
Gregg ,   Haifa Il   (10.26.12)
Israelis are primitive apes
27. #21 Israelis this, Israelis that
Tahl   (10.26.12)
What about your own hateful, bitter self? Have you gotten all the bile out of your system? Being a sourpuss will shorten your life.
28. #26 Gregg, the king of hypocrisy
Tahl   (10.26.12)
Wow Gregg, you sure like to mouth off and spout a lot of garbage against your host country. Tell me then, if Israel is really a "third world country", and "Israelis are primitive apes", then what are you doing living here? Maybe this is because as "primitive" and "third world" as Israel is - it still treats people with a 'special' lifestyle like yours, with respect, tolerance and equality? But of course, if we are so primitive here, you can always go to more liberal countries who would treat you and your Arab male lover much nicer - such as Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, all of Eastern Europe, and of course your own Argentina. Makes one wonder what made you flee from that place, to this 'primitive' country - surely gays are treated better there?
29. # 28
Birdi ,   Israel   (10.26.12)
Not Argentina, but Italy. So Greg has told us here. (Good post btw)
30. A plague on Israel
Ethan Schwartz ,   Eilat   (10.26.12)
The suicidal delivery people are a plague on our roads.
