1. Excuse me mr brackman..
Yankel ,   London   (12.23.12)
Do u live in london ? U think u can read a few blogs & newspapers & write a fancy article with quotes from the tanach to spice it up?
2. women
john ,   toronto   (12.23.12)
If multiple women have accused him he is guilty. He should be relieved of serving God. But proper police investigation must happen when a crime is done.Religious leaders in the community cannot determine if crimes occur.
3. Well said.
Runner1983 ,   USA   (12.23.12)
To quote from the article: "There are some sins one cannot be rehabilitated from. One who abuses one's religious office in order to gain sexual favors cannot repent and then continue to serve. Such people need to be permanently and completely removed from ever serving in a religious capacity. In corrupting their positions as spiritual leaders they are in essence making a mockery out of God." The haredi rabbis have lost all of their credibility by protecting those who sexually abuse others. They themselves make a mockery out of God. They have sinned. If it wasn't for the cult-like atmosphere that they operate in, they would loose all of their followers. I feel sorry for all of the children born into the cult of haredi Judaism.
4. Levi, you should know better
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (12.23.12)
You as a rabbi should know that there are laws of Yichud which prohibit a man from being secluded with a woman. If Chaim Halprin did or did not do what ever we can never really know for certain, but we can know for certain that he disregarded the laws of yichud and for that he is now being punished. Any man, especially a religious man, especially a rabbi, has NO business going into a secluded room with any female other than his mother, wife or daughter. You should know this and tell the world this was the big mistake that others should learn not to disregard the laws of yichud. They are for our benefit.

Well thank heaven there is still another law in the UK, one these Rabbis do not control, and hopefully there will be a trial. Then we shall see.

Henri25 ,   Brussels-Belgium   (12.23.12)
Larry, you can shake hand with the talibs. I wouldn't stay in a room alone with you, idiot.
7. The surprise Rabbi, is how you left out the entirety of the
David-ben-David ,   Israel   (12.23.12)
last part of 1 Sam:2:22-36!! God did not harden the hearts of Els's sons so he could kill them. They had hardened their own hearts. There is NO ONE who cannot receive forgiveness from Hashem. I repeat" "NO ONE". A prophet came before Eli (verse 27), and told Eli what God did, what he expected, and what was going to happen if Eli did not correct the situation. Verse 34 deals with the outcome of Eli's 2 sons. What they both did was deplorable for sure and they should have been removed from the priesthood. But don't go on record and declare that there are sins that one cannot receive forgiveness from. If you do, then you don't know the Love of Hashem, have never experienced his mercy, nor know of his GREAT Grace. Please tell the whole story when referring to His Words. I'm just sayi'n.
8. " rabbis held to higher standards" ???
ky   (12.23.12)
As an ordinary good for nothing non believer, like most of my kind who are taught to respect all human beings , I would never dream of abusing a woman or anybody else . So precisely to whom are those standards set against ?
9. #6 Henri25
DavidR ,   USA   (12.23.12)
Scripture teaches us to "abstain from the VERY APPEARANCE of evil! Larry's point is well taken. You would do good to give it some thought. Of course you have already shown yourself to be without ethics when you saw fit to call the man an "idiot."
10. Mr L brackman
sammy ,   israel   (12.23.12)
You clearly havn't got the slightest clue of any of the details in what is a highly complicated case. He gave counseling in his house only. Having been there myself, I can testify that he has a big glass window going from his office where he gives the counseling, into his kitchen where his wife stands most of the day. Furthermore his wife often walks into the room with coffee and cake for those being counseled. Clearly no laws of yichud are being violated, and it makes the allegations highly unlikely.

The Yihud law protects even more men than women, since they can t be accused of abusing the woman which whom they are in the room.

15. What a Mess
Tambour ,   Eilat   (12.23.12)
Rabbinates today deserve Zacharia's admonition. Lay community leaders should be less intimidated and deal with them as befits their crimes. Lay leaders, awed , by false claims to Semicha Rabbis bandy around, where there has been none since before R. Akiva who tried to restore it. The only godliness to recognise in some Rabbis comes from genuine love of AM Yisrael and steering a righteous path Heinous crimes are committed every day by members of the Rabbinate in London , Jerusalem New York etc Just as Roman Catholic communities have had enough and moved to expose and punish their rotten priests, so must Jewish Lay leaders embark on excising the abomination from within their spiritual institutions and leaders

David-ben-David   (12.23.12)
Egypt. But he did and still does with Israel. He also instituted the Priesthoood and considered it Holy and gave instructions on how the priests were to conduct themselves. He had no such thing with Egypt and Pharoh because they never cried out to him. They had their own gods, and when the 10 plagues would not change Pharohs mind to let Hashems people go, Hashem let his heart stay hardened. He could have let Israel go when the plague of the frogs were everywhere. In his kitchen, his bed,his bathroom, his porch, his chair, his fields, etc...
18. God wanted to kill them
Ezra ,   San Diego USA   (12.23.12)
God wanted to kill them (Samuel 1, Chapter 2:22-25); good point. Rabbi Chaim Halpern is accused of sexual misdemeanors with around 30 women!? I'd run for the hills if I were him, HaShem is merciful but a hardened heart is the formula for disaster. I would think that his sacred work to rebuild broken homes and broken souls is like money in the bank if he repents.
19. Life's not easy out here...
Joe ,   North West london   (12.23.12)
I take issue with the author of this article who has not idea at all what has/is going on here. He therefore has no right whatsoever to pass any form of judgement, as indeed he has done as he concluded his 'vort'. Sammy though (#10) has no right to pass Judgement either..... If he wants to make his point made, he knows which blog he needs 'to be laughing at'. This tragic situation has been going on for far too long (many years in fact) and it needs strong convictions from all sides concerned to help this matter come to whatever end it needs to come to.... it is not doing any good to this community - besides the laughing stock it is fast becoming throughout the religious communities, worldwide - on the contrary it is building too many high fences within. We need 'achdut' and we need it badly and we need it...NOW!
20. Chanoch?
Joe ,   London, UK   (12.23.12)
If you are already writing an article based only on only what you have been reading on blogs etc..., it's worth getting the names correc don't you think? It's not Chanoch, rather Rav Elchonon Shlita. Rav Chanoch Shlita is another character in this long and overdrawn out episode....
21. Kol Hakavod Rabbi Brackman
Mark ,   Cleveland USA   (12.23.12)
Our world has too many well-meaning people in it who have agendas that cause them to twist the words of the Torah into an unrecognizable mess, and as a result, 'miss the forest for the trees'. The supporters of Rabbi Halpern are such people. Perhaps Rabbi Halpern did many wonderful deeds throughout his career, but being a sexual predator is not an excusable fault. Simple common sense dictates that a person who has major ethical flaws, and who abuses his/her position of authority has no business having that position. Congratulations Rabbi Brackman for standing up for what is right and just.
22. RRabbis desecrate God’s name in London
firth ,   uk   (12.24.12)
You Rabbi Brackman are the biggest disgrace to your profession. You cant even get his name right. You cant even learn t'nach properly. That wasnt the sins of the sons of Eli. Shame on you learning ' mysticism' when you cant even learn simple gemoro. But that is chabad for you. The cart before the horse as usual.
23. Rabbis desecrate God’s name
David ,   Germany   (12.24.12)
The shame of it all is that this person has brought dishonor on all of us Jews. Look at how hard G’d was on Moses for hitting the rock twice, setting an example for those who lead the people. We should never forget that if someone else does something then it’s on them If a Jew does something then it’s on us!
24. independent investiagtion needed
N ,   N   (12.24.12)
If the alleged actions are a crime according to UK law, then there is/should be an investigation by London police. In the meantime a suspension would seem very appropriate. If the investigations reveal, that he definitely didn't commit a crime, then there would be no reason to force him out of his profession. To be a rabbi is a profession, not a post of infallibility. But on the other hand, it is understandable that many -like Levi Brackmann- would consider him as someone who cannot give good advice any more and therefore won't pay attention to what says in the future. From the "rumors" one can assume that he is at least not professional enough, but rabbis are human beings, who also deserve "innocent until proven guilty" in terms of allegations of a crime!

How do u know tat it's true ??? Why so much hatred ??? Worst sort of anti semetisim
27. Such a sin should bar him from being a Rabbi
sean green ,   pasadena usa   (12.25.12)
The people can no longer trust him. We do not want to become another Catholic Church. May he be forgiven but not trusted again.
28. PS, #26:
Runner1983 ,   USA   (12.25.12)
You would have much more credibility if you expressed your disgust at the behavior of Rabbi Halpern if in fact the charges are proven. Unconditionally supporting the accused and attacking the victim as often occurs within the haredi community happens too often. This is contrary to Jewish values of anyone outside the haredi community.
29. R. Chaim Halpern's abuse
Ken Steinman ,   Bexley, Ohio USA   (12.25.12)
Thank you for highlighting, responsibly, the importance of supporting victims' accusations of sexual abuse. While every person deserves an initial presumption of innocence, a community and its religious leaders must act decisively on the outcomes of investigations. Failure to do so, as in explaining away claims as part of "a conspiracy" is shameful and only furthers abuse. Halpern and his supporters merit our contempt and outrage until they are finally willing to acknowledge the harm they have (and are) causing. Peh lahem, v'lo yidabeiru/Oznayim lahem v'lo yiru...Voices like yours are critical to help Jews everywhere address the scrourge of sexual abuse in our community. Again, thank you.
