61. Bible Buttressed By Archaeology
Adam ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.27.12)
is fine. It points to a historical continuity and the land being a focal point of Judaism. Where people like me (a frum Jew) object is when people cite the Torah as a Divine Land Deed and leave it at that. I believe it to be true, but it's a profoundly counterproductive argument on the world stage. There are plenty of other arguments that would better serve us (I also live over the Green Line). The argument should always be historical, of which the Bible is a source but not the only source, and legal.
62. Who cares about the Bible?
Dan   (12.27.12)
It's an old book written by people, not God. So Shchem etc are mentioned, so what? The UN and the majority of the world approved the land inside the green line as a Jewish state; nothing else is legitimate, period. Either abandon the settllements or see Israel die. That is the only real choice.
63. Israel has no claim to Palestinian land whatsoever
Alan Smith UK   (12.27.12)
Religious comic books and historical fantasy don't make for a valid claim to Palestinian land under International Law. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and E.Jerusalem violate article 49 of the fourth Geneva Convention, and without due provenance Israel has no claim to Palestinian land.

You really should stop wearing these funny fur heats in the heat. Obviously it causes brain damage.

66. Jewish claim based on more than Bible
D. ,   New York, USA   (12.27.12)
The Jewish claim to Yehuda and Shomron (the West Bank) and the rest of Israel isn't just based on the Bible. It's based on historical records and archaelogical finds going back thousands of years that corroborate claims in the Bible. The trouble today is that many Christians ignore those claims and Arab Muslims are brainwashed to believe such claims are made up. It's time to face an inconvenient fact: the Jewish People has a legitimate, historical, and religious claim to the ENTIRE Land of Israel (Israel + Yehuda & Shomron), PERIOD.

tom ,   tel aviv   (12.27.12)
rights to spaces they occupy (as in: reside in) then we, as Israelis surly have a heck of an argument to be here as well! So let's stop dragging God into this; we are here because we have to &are willing to fight for it. When we win a decisive victory, then we'll be just as "legitimate" as USA or Sweden!

Agreed Israel has broken international laws in the past but so has every other country in the world at some time or another. When international laws clash with national interests you watch even the most moral countries break a few laws. The reality of the world is not should you break the law but can you get away with it. You never taken the dog for a walk and there was nobody around so you didn't bother cleaning up the mess, officially your breaking the law but you can get away with it this time.
71. Jerusalem is never mentioned in the Torah of Moses
observer ,   Egypt   (12.27.12)
The city is not mentioned specifically in the Pentateuch. Melchizedek, the king of Salem, or Yere as Abraham called it, who was ''priest of God Most High'' (Genesis 14:18), maybe or may not be the monarch of Jerusalem. It WAS long before the priesthood was instituted! what exodus? The discoveries made by the new archaeology discredited a great exodus in the 13th century BC. Moses could not have led the Hebrews out of Egypt into the Promised Land, for the good reason that the latter was Egyptian territory at the time. And there is no trace of either a slave revolt against the pharaonic empire or of a sudden conquest of Canaan by outsiders.

"Israel has no claim to Palestinian land whatsoever". I totally agree, but there is no "Palestinian" land and so Israel doesn't claim it. She only claims Jewish land, stolen from her over the centuries by Turks, Brits & Arabs.

Sure. How about the Machpelah? The Tomb of Rachel? The Spring at Gihon? The Kotel? The Dead Sea Scrolls? That's just for starters.

Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (12.27.12)
@ 52 The Westbank was part of the territory allocated by the United Nations to be part of the Palestinian Arab state (See UNGAR 181). @76. 4th Geneval Convention does not apply to the territories Israel occupied in 1967? Both Israel's Supreme Court and the International Court of Justice, the highest legal authorities have stated that the 4th Geneva Convention and The Hague regulations of 1907 do apply to the Palestinian occupied territories.

Following your logic it's in Iran's interest to have it's own nuclear energy source and few nukes not to be bullied into submission by a shitty little country that can't even support her self without handouts like the French ambassador to UK described you few years back.

1. Have you forgotten that the Arabs REJECTED partition? They chose to go to war instead. They lost. End of story. You cannot go back and rewrite history. Having rejected Resolution 181 at the time it was voted on in the General Assembly, the ersatz "Palestinians" cannot now turn around and say "We changed our minds." The option to do so is no longer available. 2. The Fourth Geneva Convention applies EXCLUSIVELY to sovereign territories. What part of "sovereign territory" do you NOT understand?

Those are biblical terms. Give me some other sources to confirm your fairy tales like the existence of Moses, Mutiny, Exodus etc., for instance the place known as Jerusalem or the City of David according to your fairy tales was already a permanent settlement for thousands during the early Bronze Age that is c. 3000–2800 BC.predating Dawid over 2000 years and it known as Roshlamem 1000 years before David ,... The structures like the building around Machpelah caves, The Kotel are erected by Herod the Great an Arab by the way just 2000 years ago, 1000 years after your mythical David and the scrolls are the early edition of fairy tales.

85. Biblical claims to Palestine
observer ,   Egypt   (12.27.12)
Joel 3:1-4 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink. Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompense? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompense upon your own head. The Philistines were the unwearied assailants of Israel in the days of the Judges, and Saul, and David Judges 13:1; 1 Samuel 4; 13; 17; 1 Samuel 23:1; 1 Samuel 30; 1 Samuel 31:1-13, Judges 13:1; 1 Samuel 4; 13; 17; 1 Samuel 23:1; 1 Samuel 30; 1 Samuel 31:1-13; 2 Chronicles 21:16-17; 2 Chronicles 22:1.

I don't have to prove known facts. If you can manage to read any scholarly texts, you will know that the link between the Jewish people and the land of Israel (including Judea and Samaria) is unassailable. We know you're intellectually challenged -- you really do not have to keep on proving it to us. Where exactly are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Seems to me they were destroyed. Completely. Unlike the Western Wall of the Second Temple, which remains standing.

Unlike your fairy tales events and rulers the Hanging Gardens are documented and described by witnesses of few cultures in few languages - Western Wall proves only that Herod was a visionary builder and sole Hebrew ruler that left us a proof that he existed.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.28.12)
And the patriarchs and matriarchs that are buried in the Machpelah. Is that also a fairy tale? You are very remiss in your characterization of the Bible as a fairy tale. Particularly in view of the mounds of archeological evidence that shows a Jewish presence dating back several thousand years. The Bible is a form of written history. Whether you like it or not. Your problem is that you are trying to mold history and actual events in a way that allows you to justify your political view. Why don't you go peddle your wares on Al Jazeera? They will doubtless be far more receptive to your warped world view.
90. To Sarah B #89
Alex   (12.30.12)
Not only "Jewish" presence, but foremost Hebrew presence. You are constantly missing the point that there were other tribes than the tribe of Judah, and that by time there were other Hebrews than the Jews. Moses didn´t solely bring "the Jews out of Egypt", he brought all Israelite tribes out of Egypt. The history of the Holy land isn´t the sole trademark of the Rabbinical Jews, but also of Samaritans, Karaites and other Hebrew groups. Add also the the great amount of Hebrews who were forcibly converted to Islam and to Christianity. The divine promise to Jabob included all his seed - repeat ALL HIS SEED. Many, many years before the captivity in Babylon, before Talmud, before the Kingdom of David and so forth.
