1. not...
dina ,   haifa   (01.09.13)
I went to a haredi school and there always was plenty of violence. There is also no shortage of drug use in the haredi community... Please pull your head out of your ass before you try to represent the haredi public. FYI - you have quite a few grammatical errors in your article - you might want to take some complementary educational classes :-)
2. Education
Jacob E ,   Holon, Israel   (01.09.13)
Whatever they are claiming their Haredi education does not teach, they are learning it from somewhere and in this case all of them are learning it, so there has to be a commonality somewhere in their education.
3. Comical article
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (01.09.13)
I too read anout a girl being pelted with stones but I didnt' come away with the idea that she was a lesbian. How does the author know the victim was a lesbian? Did the victim wear a sign saying she was one? Perhaps a secret tattoo? Special handshake? Different color or style of hair? Using this as your rationale for the boys throwing stones and excusing them seems strange for one attempting to bring "different segments of society together'.
4. STONE AGED "reaction", is it in Afganistan ?
Big Mouth ,   On the face   (01.09.13)
5. What education?
Ralph ,   Caesarea   (01.09.13)
Banging his head against the wailling wall is not education....
6. very sad mess
eric ,   canada   (01.09.13)
I made Aliyah in 1997 and left in 2004. There is a terrible lack of love and concern in Israel. If one does not belong to any particular community one is as good as dead in Israel. I now prefer to remain in Canada. Israel is a lost cause for me.
7. Haredi Education
David ,   Los Angeles   (01.09.13)
This is not the only incident of Haredim hassling women for not conforming to their modes of behavior, so a pattern can be established and if there is a pattern then you must look for systemic issures
8. Bigoted article
Ehud   (01.09.13)
Every time there is someone blowing up innocent people after shouting Allah Hu'Akhbar, ther appears a stooge on TV explaining us that this is not true Islam, and so this author wants to explain away the increasingly aggressive behavior of Haredi riffraff, roaming the streets instead of working or studying by the silly "it is despite, not because". Well the burden of proof is on the Haredim, the Taliban, and the Beotherhood. Spare us the "despite" claim until then. And spare us the nonsense about drug and alcohol abuse occurring among seculars. Check out the Bratzlav looneys (and the suitcases full of vodka they bring home from the Ukraine). You can find a substantial minority of them stoned at the airport.

Just because you didn't have the stamina doesn't mean anybody else is to blame. There is lots of love and kindness in Israel, but sometimes life here is too rough absorbing to spend time on bullshit and narcissism. Having said that, we would love to have you back anytime, if not as a compatriot, then as a visitor. Take care
10. Dear Ricki
Ay ,   USA   (01.09.13)
First of all, I'd like to thank you for your work in spreading ahavas yisroel among the various streams of the Jewish people, whether they are gay or whether they display certain proclivities for dark-color clothes. (This is to point out that the use of the word "proclivities" is not really helpful, if you attempt to spread ahavas yisroel.) I'd like to note that your op-ed piece was published - as per website time markings - more than 7 hours after another article described how a woman was verbally assaulted by some Orthodox men first for having the hutzpa to board a public bus through the front door and then for deciding to stand in the middle of it. So, while we all have our faults, maybe, it is time to look at the sources of problems not only outside but also inside the haredi community. Surely, the bus scandals - among other things - have not escaped your attention.
11. Nice to hear
Scarborough1414 ,   Scarborough, Ontario   (01.10.13)
about your building in B'nei Brak, where seldom is heard a discouraging word, but that is not the reality elsewhere. Ask Na'amah Margolies in Beit Shemesh about the "nice" Hareidim who surrounded her school for weeks on end and shouted endless insults to small kids under the age of 10, all because they were Modern Orthodox and not Ultra Orthodox. I try to explain about this nonsense to friends...they scratch their heads in stupefaction. I have written several angry talkbacks on this subject and Ynet has blocked them all, probably this one as well. Any Hareidi who messes with a female family member of mine in Israel will have to answer to me! If more seculars beat the $**t out of any Hareidi (even secular) harassers, there would be less trouble in the long run. Secular men, protect your women!!
12. You will not fix Haredi beliefs, foundations are very wrong.
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.10.13)
Foundations which are based on racism, hatred, isolationism, inflexibility. Your house can be populated by people who are trying to get along, but it proves nothing as a principle. These unacceptable foundations have been with Ultra Orthodox Jews for thousands of years and destroyed Israel time and again. It must not happen again, NEVER AGAIN!
13. Haredi education
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.10.13)
I live in a Haredi neighborhood. Not by choice, but because the neighborhood changed and I can't afford to move. If the behaviour of the children in the streets is anything to go by, the violence in the schools must be epidemic. Both in shops and in the street, the boys of all ages push anyone in their way, shove each other, bigger boys beat up on smaller ones and they gang up on weaker ones. Just yesterday I reprimanded a boy of about 12 beating up on a younger boy (maybe 7). They both stared at me with a total lack of understanding! This is Haredi education.
14. Apparently manners and interpersonal
Runner1983 ,   USA   (01.10.13)
skills are not taught to haredi children.
15. misinformation
Shmoulik ,   Hadera   (01.10.13)
This article is pure misinformation, look for instance how much violence there is in New York between rabbis of different sects they hit one another badly, All the sex scandals in Australia, London, New York etc, Racism in the haredi schools, is much higher than in secular schools, you will be amazed at how many haredi sits in prison in USA and elswhere, "love your neighbor" is nice but only you practice it, they don't
16. #12 MIchael California
Ken ,   US   (01.10.13)
You obviously have never met a Chareidi person in your life; "Ultra Orthodox for thousands of years destroyed Israel time and again" Huh? You are clueless when it comes to history, and you are full of the racism, hatred, isolationism and inflexibility that you accuse Haredim of. Do you think the Germans would have murdered Haredim in Poland if secular German Jews hadn't been so successful in Germany? How about the Inquisition and Spanish expulsions because of Neuvo Chritianos' success in Spanish society? How about the leading rabbis trying to make peace with the Romans, but being thwarted by secular hooligans who brought about the destruction of the second Temple? You don't know about any of this because you're a hateful, ignorant idiot!
17. #16 Ken, This is the absolute bottom of all the quotes:
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.11.13)
You wrote: "Do you think the Germans would have murdered Haredim in Poland if secular German Jews hadn't been so successful in Germany?" Go wash your hands with the strongest of soaps. Then wash your tongue with pure ammonia. Finally, feed your brain to the most vicious hungry dogs.

Ken ,   Monsey, NY, USA   (01.13.13)
Well, at least you admit I have a mind; something that can't be said about you! Yes, throughout history, when Jews leave Judaism, a religion that does not prevent them from being successful on all levels of secular society, they get us Chareidim in trouble. Your ignorance of Jewish history (or any history) prevents you from understanding this, and all you can do is throw poisonous diatribes based on your absolute lack of knowledge in all areas. Go out and learn something about Judaism; you might find about a beautiful way of life of which you know nothing. Start with Uri Zohar's "Waking up Jewish."
20. The author of the article
msh ,   Haifa   (01.13.13)
seems to look upon the haredi world through the rose galsses, and upon the secular world - through the dark glasses. I think, she must find another optometrist.
