Obama is reducing the size of the US military, but is militarizing the CIA. Soon, the military (under control of the people through congress) will be secondary to the CIA, the President's personal army free of congressional control. Already you see how badly this is working out: drone war in Pakistan/Afghanistan killing thousands of innocents who will now hate America, the destruction of Libya that has released weapons for Jihad and led to the civil war in Mali, execution of US citizens without trial, widespread enhanceed interrogation, and of course Syria that some predict will be a disaster even worse than Obama's Libya.

There is no country that is self sufficient be it in petrol or some other necessary commodity. This means free business exchanges between equals is a precondition for economic health. However, economic conditions are poor in many countries & the resulting political instability in these countries is a source of conflicts, autoritarian regimes. Examples abound of Isolationism & indifference backfiring on those countries whose politicians expected uninvolvement would secure homeland peace. We know the 60 million deaths of WWII as a result of the allies letting nazis rearm Germany. Did it spare the US ? The Brits or the French? Not helping over the years African countries to benefit from their natural ressources & to reduce poverty so that democracies may have a chance, is now causing headaches in Europe burdenned with waves of illegal immigrants. I agree with the author's analysis. I have always thought that Obama was a pacifist and isolationist and this is the course he wants the US to follow. this did not work after WW1 and it will not work now. The US must work to contain Islam or there will be war everywhere. These people are more dangerous than the Soviets were because they believe in their cause. If they win, most of the will again fall under totalitarian and repressive governments.

We can also discuss whether the Afghanistan invasion was a good idea. neither of these change the fact that Obama's drone war with 90%-95% innocent dead lost any gains you might have made there. No one can explain what US interest was served by destroying Gadaffi. Yet, Obama illegally and with no discussion, no approval and no congressional oversight sent the militarized CIA to "liberate" Libya. As predicted, innocents lost their lives, property and are plunged into poverty to live under a worse despot. Now, Africa and the Near East are flooded with high-quality weapons that are snapped-up by local warlords and Jihadis. Just look at what is happening in Mali.
