It sounds like everyone involved in this affair acted responsibly except young Mr. Levy and his public-defender lawyer, who claimed he had "no criminal record." The story says his client had been on work-release at an Arava roadhouse in lieu of jail time, following an arrest and trial in Israel for breaking-and-entering. What is that, chopped liver? Note to Mr. Levy: work-release may be an "honor system," but that doesn't mean you can just walk away anytime you feel like it. Hopefully you have learned that message by now.
